Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Your list of pre-fic checks.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
When deciding whether or not to read a fic that has headers in any fandom, what's the priority you give the info presented? Do you read the headers top down in entirety, do you skip to specific sections, do non-content aspects like formatting and icon choice matter? What makes you decide to read something or pass it by?

Re: Your list of pre-fic checks.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Character/s, then word count, then chapters, then whether any fandom tropes are mentioned anywhere.

I like long fic, so often just a few thousand words isn't really enough to get me interested. And if I see any hint of certain tropes, I won't even bother.

Question about W (spoilers)

Why didn't Martin's mum question why he is (also) a Man with a Van?

Re: Question about W (spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Because Martin doesn't really want to talk about it and she doesn't want to pry.

Brit-Pick Question

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
So where I live, in the Midwestern US, the meal of grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup has a strong image of nostalgia for childhood. It's the classic warm food to come in to after playing in the snow. Now, does it have any similar connotations in the UK? And if not, what is a good classic comfort food?

Re: Brit-Pick Question

(Anonymous) 2013-02-03 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Cleo here, forgive any missed typos, I don't usually post from myiPod.

My childhood memory which should fit with Martin's age range is a breville toastie maker. Now these don't just make sealed cheese toasties (or cheese and ham, my fave) but pockets of molten, scalding, surely it defies the laws of cheese physics goodness while keeping a perfectly golden outside. They make McDonalds apple pies look like glaciers. Many people enjoy them with tomato or brown sauce, I hate them both.

Does this help? Maybe you have toastie makers but they were quite the thing when I was growing up.

Spoiler space...

.....

.....

So the cast list for Xinzhou has no guest stars, only the core cast and an ATC. Combined with the episode description in the Radio Times, this makes me think that it will be this season's 'bottle episode' a la Limerick. Because clearly next week, there will be too many plot points to resolve for it to be the end-of-season episode where they all just sit on GERTI and talk. But that kind of episode can be awesome, so... I'm really looking forward to this one!

Re: X - credits spoilers I suppose...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-04 12:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I was actually thinking about that conversation JF omitted between Martin and Douglas about their fathers. I wondered if JF was ever going to get back to that. Maybe it'll be in this episode.

Headcanon about Douglas' Daughter

(Anonymous) 2013-02-06 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
What is your headcanon for the mentioned but yet to be presented offspring of First Officer Richardson? How old do you think she is, what is she like, what's her relationship with her parents like?

I bounce between two contrasting headcanons: one where she's a hell-raiser in training, all of her father's gusto and none of his time-earned wisdom and restraint.

My other idea is that she is really shy and awkward, going through a difficult period made all the more uncomfortable by the fact that everything comes easy to her parents. Both of my images find her at her early teenage years, for some reason.

What do you think the Richardson spawn is like?

Re: Headcanon about Douglas' Daughter

(Anonymous) 2013-02-06 07:56 am (UTC)(link)
Well she likely would be in her early teens by now I would think, given that she was young enough to be having a children's birthday party when they bombed it, but obviously old enough for Douglas to have seperated from her mother and re-married again in the interim.
I'd have guessed she was between 6 and 9 during the carpet-bombing carp incident and, as time passes in Fitton the same way it passes in real life, that would put her in or near her tweens by now.

But in my head, Douglas's '8 years sober' coincide with his daughter's birth so that does give her a fairly specific age as far as I'm concerned.

Xinzhou

(Anonymous) 2013-02-06 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooh, Douglas, did I detect a little antipathy towards the idea of Martin leaving? A little jealousy floating around there, both towards Carolyn and 'Burcules' and Martin all potentially moving on, which would rather spell the end of things for Douglas whether he likes it or not...

Though on a purely personal note EEEE! Martin had a second date with a third planned for Croyden. Oh Martin, you impossible old romantic. BUWA-HAH-HAH.

Re: Xinzhou [Spoilers]

(Anonymous) 2013-02-06 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I was quite pleased to hear Theresa mentioned again. I really do hope Martin gets to marry a princess, or at least end the series still dating one. That would be the perfect ending for him, imo.

Did anyone else love Douglas's reaction to the idea of Martin leaving? I mean it wasn't the nicest reaction, him trying to take away Martin's confidence so that he wouldn't apply to Swiss Airlines, but at the same time it's nice to see how much he doesn't want Martin to go. You can really see how much Douglas and Martin's relationship has progressed this series because they just know each other so well and they just seem to fit and work really well together.

Pleased as I was to hear that Martin's relationship with Theresa is progressing, the thing that made me quietly squee the most was that Carolyn has been converted to opera! She was going to see Tosca ON HER OWN, and disappointed about missing it! And Tosca is not even a beginner's-level opera, you have to be quite hardcore to appreciate Puccini. As a big opera fan myself, and involved to some extent in the professional opera world, that put a huge smile on my face.

Re: Little wee Xinxhou spoiler

I like to imagine she was going just so she could annoy Herc by telling him in detail all the reasons she thought it was awful ;p

Just in case anyone's interested in giving radio comedy writing a go

(Anonymous) 2013-02-07 11:49 am (UTC)(link)
Scribbles here again! Just a heads-up in case anybody else fancies giving writing funnies for R4 & R4 extra a go - Newsjack's back next week for topical comedy sketches & one-liners http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00kvs8r and there's a new, non-topical sketch show coming in the summer that will be using material by new, unsolicited writers http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00kvs8r/features/the-show-what-you-wrote

I'm going to be submitting material for both, and if you do fancy doing some radio comedy yourself I can't recommend it enough. Newsjack's produced by JF's Souvenir Programme producer, who is a really lovely guy, added to which I'm going to stick my neck out & assume most people here are female - They are very receptive to female writers. Only about 1 in 10 submissions last series were from female writers & it's a balance they want to redress.

END OF PLUG.

TOBLERONES ARE FROM SWITZERLAND.

That's Arthur in for moving to Switzerland. Carolyn is considering it, Herc is house-hunting, Martin has a potential paying job if he gets in as well as being closer to Theresa, so the only odd one out for Switzerland is Douglas.

Re: I. JUST. REALISED.

So, Martin's got everything he could ever wish for, essentially, which is all well and good for him (albeit a little too 'Disney' for my tastes. That and to be honest I couldn't really care less what happens to Martin...)

But DOUGLAS. All the other characters are essentially mapping out their futures of progress and scenarios which will leave him with absolutely nothing.

Your Favorite Series

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
What's your favorite series of Cabin Pressure, and why?

For myself, it's probably series 3. The bickering between Martin and Douglas has calmed down a bit since episodes like "Ipswich" and "Johannesburg", but the banter still has an edge to it, especially in episodes like "Qiki". You get the family feel in more of an "angry siblings who all care undernearth" vibe, rather than "always having each other's backs and being super supportive". It's a close tie between series 2 and 3, but the introduction of Herc in series 3 pushes it over for me, as it gives Carolyn a bit more to do, plus Herc is just one of my favorites.

So if I had to rank the series, it probably be 3, 2 (despite having my favorite individual episode, "Limerick"), 4, 1 (I love "Fitton" but absolutely cannot stand "Cremona"). What are other people's rankings?

I like 3 and 4. St Petersburg is my favorite episode. V, W, and X are also fun to me.

Newbie's query - reprompts

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I've spotted a prompt at the beginning of part VI I'd love to reprompt. Is it too soon? (I come from the Sherlock kinkmeme where you have can only reprompt after two parts.) (If that makes sense.)

I don't think we have an official rule, but I don't see a problem with reprompting from anything other than the current prompt post. Just link back to the original.

Where do you see the characters ending up, after this series?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Zurich

Hmm...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Anyone else finding this series a bit meh? Maybe I was looking forward to it too much for it to ever live up to my expectations, but I just haven't really laughed at any of the episodes and I'm not too keen on the plots (though this is probably because Arthur and Douglas are my favourites)

I feel exactly the same. Personally, I don't believe all the bullshit about how we've just hyped it up too much. I felt exactly the same excitement for season four that I did for seasons two and three. The writing style has definitely changed. For some people it's a change they really like, because it hits upon a lot of the reasons they love Cabin Pressure in the first place. But for some of us, it feels a bit stale and derivative.

TBH I feel like instead of listening to Cabin Pressure, I'm listening to a good Cabin Pressure fanfic.

Most and Least Re-Listens

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Which episodes have you listened to the most times, and which the least?

For me
Most: Ottery St. Mary. I wasn't even a big fan of the episode to start out with, but somewhere along the line I became a die-hard Carolyn/Herc shipper, and it became required listening. Probably tied with St. Petersburg, as I enjoy the tone shift and higher stakes.

Least: Cremona. I have listened to the episode once all the way through. Once. I've tried other times, but I just can't do it. Hester is unpleasant, the cringe comedy is horrible, and the set-up is way too "zany" for my tastes.

Most: Ottery St Mary, St Petersburg.

Least: Helsinki

Did Douglas actually divorce Helena? I remember the cheating, but not the divorce part.

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 04:17 am (UTC)(link)
I was sure there had been a scene where Douglas was being nasty and it turned out he'd had the papers served and Martin was awkwardly comforting, but now I am sure that was in a story rather than an episode. I think though since Helena was his third wife and he lists himself as having three ex-wives, it's safe to assume the divorce is canon.
