Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Hmm...

Anyone else finding this series a bit meh? Maybe I was looking forward to it too much for it to ever live up to my expectations, but I just haven't really laughed at any of the episodes and I'm not too keen on the plots (though this is probably because Arthur and Douglas are my favourites)

I feel exactly the same. Personally, I don't believe all the bullshit about how we've just hyped it up too much. I felt exactly the same excitement for season four that I did for seasons two and three. The writing style has definitely changed. For some people it's a change they really like, because it hits upon a lot of the reasons they love Cabin Pressure in the first place. But for some of us, it feels a bit stale and derivative.

TBH I feel like instead of listening to Cabin Pressure, I'm listening to a good Cabin Pressure fanfic.

There's fanfic that isn't written by huge Martin fans?

NA

I love you, anon.

Links? I'm curious as to how not liking Martin magically makes people better writers - even better, potentially, than the programme's actual writer. This must be the most amazing fanfic, I'm dying to read it.

Don't worry it's the usual anti-Martin troll filling every page with their paranoid rantings. They seem to think that every time they start the same conversation here on this same topic (twice in one page now) it isn't obvious even just from their typing that they are the same person.

I'm waiting for our special snowflake to start giving John all this grief, it is only a matter of time.

I'm delighted with this series and it has added an extra level of joy to know that it annoys a troll!

For all you guys bleat on about not being assholes, you're kind of dicks to anyone with a different opinion.

da

I've only seen that in these head to head arguments between people determined to be jerks about having their viewpoint be the only one. It's tiresome, and ultimately pointless. Easy to ignore when it stays in one thread though.

It's my favourite series of all of them so far. No 'Meh' episodes in it at all.

I'm enjoying it, too. *high five*

NA On what basis is it your favorite? For me I really wanted to like it but it's far too contrived and feels quite hurried, and far too Martin-centric. I love the episodes with equal weighting and none of them have been this series

Re: Hmm...

The relationship between them all seems more organic, the interplay more genuine, and the teamwork has been in the forefront of most of the plot resolutions.

I've been ambivalent about many episodes in the prior three series' though, and in general rarely like sitcom characterisation and plotting at all, so my perspective is likely somewhat unusual. I think it's that this series feels more like a drama and there's more plot continuity between episodes. Hard to explain.

I've seen more people saying (well, often shouting in CAPS on Tumblr) that this is THE BEST SEASON EVER, and I seriously don't get it. I'm enjoying it, absolutely, and it made me smile a lot, but there are eps in the other seasons that had me literally howling with laughter, and scenes that nearly moved me to tears, and plot twists that rendered me speechless.

This series is less funny and less cleverly written. And I don't think that is just a simple matter of taste. If you look at the whole structure of 'Fitton' and you compare that to X, you can see what I mean. Well, some of you might.

Re: Hmm...

Considering Fitton's one of my least favourite episodes, I don't see it at all.

To me Fitton was a jumble of tacked on character details and developments coming out of nowhere, loosely shaken in a worn-out carpet bag of lol-drinking, and incongruously ended as a soap opera. It's not my least favourite episode, and there are far many worse things in the world, but I wouldn't hold it up as a structure example to aspire to.

I've been fairly divided so far. I was not a huge fan of Timbuktu, but I dislike Mr. Birling episodes in general. I loved Uskerty, because of the bonding moments between Arthur and Douglas, and I enjoyed Gerry as a one-off character. I like what Vaduz did with the Carolyn/Herc dynamic, but I was a little sad that Douglas did not have a bigger role to play while dealing with royalty. I was pretty meh on Wokingham, as it had little Arthur, a Carolyn+Douglas plot with no meat to it, and a little too much Martin. And I was pretty neutral on Xingzhou, except that I have a lot more love for the other bottle episodes, Fitton and Limerick. So for me, that's one and a half good, two and a half bad, and one neutral. Not the best season, but not one that I regret listening to.

I'm really, really enjoying it and appreciating the distinct difference in tone and texture. I love that he's developing the characters and their situation beyond a kind of sitcom stasis.

As for it being Martin-centric - well, if he was going to shake the tree, then it's inevitable that one character or other would get focus, and since all these characters are his creation, he can choose whichever he likes. It was never going to be Arthur (partly because I think Mr Finnemore wouldnt write himself a huge part and partly because Arthur exists in a state of perfect innocence and happiness already), and Carolyn is also getting quite a bit of development. Douglas has certainly got the least love this series, but I suppose there just isn't time to devote to everyone.

I'm completely neutral on character preference, I'm interested in them all equally, and I'm just happy to explore any of them further.

nayrt

Yes! Development beyond sitcom stasis, perfect way of saying it. I agree.

I want to hug your comment. It's so reasonable ^^

For the season so far...I liked all episodes so far except Wokingham (due to Martin's family being somewhat similar to my own and if you have to deal with people refusing any help or ignoring any 'don't do that'-pleas for more than 30 minutes it's not funny but somewhat annoying...) but I am really happy about the character-development.

Re: Hmm...

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm finding season 4 doggedly mediocre and derivative.
