Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 10:16 am (UTC)(link)
So, Martin's got everything he could ever wish for, essentially, which is all well and good for him (albeit a little too 'Disney' for my tastes. That and to be honest I couldn't really care less what happens to Martin...)

But DOUGLAS. All the other characters are essentially mapping out their futures of progress and scenarios which will leave him with absolutely nothing.

Douglas will think of something clever, so it all works out for him. Obviously.

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 04:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. And Douglas knows loads of people all over the world. It's a bit rich to think he has no friends or prospects. Douglas is hardly going to be a sad old man weeping a single emo tear all alone in the street.

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 05:00 pm (UTC)(link)
So we immediately spit on anyone who feels a bit of sympathy for Douglas's situation?

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
did anyone say that? No.

Anyone else get the feeling this is going to turn into another "I'm a precious snowflake" thread...

Don't think Douglas is a woobie? Think he might still have a trick or two up his sleeve? OPPRESSION!!!!

:P

lol this place. Express sympathy for Martin, that's only natural and right. Express sympathy for Douglas? OMG you over the top emo victim.

"Express sympathy for Martin, that's only natural and right"

Really?!? Might want to have a look back over this chat post and The Other Place for all of the 'I hate Martin Crieff/How dare people write him as a woobie/People with sympathy for Martin are just shrieking Cumberbitch children who don't even listen to the programme properly like I do' segues & compare them with the number of posts insulting Douglas/Allam fans before you break out that particular Sweeping Statement Broom.

(I feel for Douglas. AND often for Martin, although things have gone his way this series. AND Carolyn who's letting Martin go even though it could well mean the end of MJN. AND Arthur, who only ever wanted to fly around with his Mum & his friends & doesn't even know Martin's leaving yet. What sort of bleeding heart does that make me?!)

Martin inspires strong emotions from two different sides, but any hint at the idea that Douglas might be human and someone who's not in the best situation is dramatized as tinhat woobification.

Really though? Really? Because I haven't really seen that.

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 04:05 am (UTC)(link)
I've not seen that, sorry.

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
lol you. Turning a canonically clever character who always has a trick up his sleeve into a tragic figure with NO HOPE and NO FRIENDS!!! is just straight up denial. It's also a bit insulting to Douglas, if one can insult a fictional character.

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Douglas is divorced three times and has been kicked out of Air England...there are quite a lot of situations where having many tricks up his sleeve did NOT help him.
And in fact apart from St. Petersburg most of the troubles he solved over the series where things that would not have had major consequences if it hadn't worked.
I'm not saying that the end of MJN would turn him in an emo-woobie but it wouldn't be easy for him either...

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-14 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's not like Douglas is a man with a history of self-destructive tendencies or anything.

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, because disagreeing with a viewpoint and thinking highly of Douglas is exactly like spitting in the face of people you don't even know in physical space.

Metaphor goes right over your head, doesn't it?

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

You're precious.

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 03:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I remember Finnemore saying he was going to explore Douglas' puffed up image of himself in season four, but we're almost done and Douglas hasn't been doing much... So it seems he's exploring it by making Douglas redundant and useless. Which isn't much fun.

Re: Ahhh, Douglas!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-09 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Wanna bet he does just that in the Yveton ep? Martin will be kept busy by his interview and Teresa, and Herc, a tougher nut, might just force Douglas to face the music and stop pretending all is fine.

I'm not really worrying about Douglas, though. He's been kicked out of BA, granted, but he hasn't been struck from the aviation records, and Herc has enough connections to bring him along if he wants to be part of the Zurich gambit.

(I'm more concerned about GERTI's fate, to speak the truth...)

The series hasn't finished yet, you don't know what might happen. There isn't much to say until we see how it pans out next week.

being left with "absolutely nothing" seems hugely unlikely to be honest.

NA I HAVE heard the last episode and I have to agree with the first anon

DA

He probably won't lose *everything* but if MJN folds and his friends all move, he's lost a pretty big part of his life. Everything that we, the audience, knows makes him Douglas.
