PROMPT POST PART III

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE

(updated 6 June)

Cabin Pressure Fic Prompt Post Three

Welcome everybody. How you got here I have no idea but thank you for coming and welcome again, nonetheless . As you may have gathered this is a Fic Prompting Meme dedicated solely to the hilarious and oh-so-addictive BBC Radio 4 sitcom - Cabin Pressure. I'm aiming for this to be pretty anything goes - but in order for everything to run smoothly, there are a few guidelines. Don't worry - they're not too restrictive.

FILLING GUIDELINES

As you probably all know - our meme now has it's very own database created and maintained by the great Enigel. It both catalogues each and every prompt that we post and provides links to fills. You can find it here: Google Spreadsheet

We also have a Pinboard archive which has been put in place by the lovely [personal profile] oxfordtweed in the place of our late Delicious Archive. This Archive contains a list of all the prompts this meme has to offer - you can find it here: Pinboard Archive

This is a great step forward in making our meme just a little more organised (but not too organised of course. This is Cabin Pressure) which is always a good thing.

So in order to make things easier to archive - Please nest your fills.

This can be done by either posting each part as a reply to that part's immediate predecessor, OR by replying each time to Part I OR - well you get the idea :D

It makes it simpler for Enigel and myself to link fills in a clean and clear manner. Following these guildelines will be very much appreciated guys :D

REPROMPTING

Reprompting is allowed but please include the URL of the original prompt when you do so. It will make it infinitely more easy to Archive which would make both Enigel and I very happy :)

As for everything else

  1. Be respectful to one another. Disagreements are fine, but not everything disagreeable is trolling. If you suspect someone of trolling, just ignore it. If you cannot respond to a comment without attacking or trolling someone else, keep it to yourself.

  2. No bashing prompts. It might not be your cup of tea - but obviously someone wants it enough to go to the effort of requesting it. So just scroll past it.

  3. Prompt away as much as you like guys - seriously, go wild - but please try to fill as well.

  4. NEW - If your fill includes a major element that veers from the original prompt (crossovers, established universes, kinks, et cetera), please take a few moments to check with the OP that such additions are welcome. This has caused problems in the past and it only takes a few moments of your time.
  5. Please no RPF. I'm not trying to oppress you RPF writers and enthusiasts, I would just really like to avoid any legal problems.

  6. When you post a fill (or post a new part of a WIP) please go over to the Filled Prompts Post (if it is complete) or the WIP Post (if there are still more parts to come) and, following each post's guideline's, post a link to this fill or new part.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

+ Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Synaesthesia

One of the MJN crew has synaesthesia.

I'd love a fic about how they perceive the other members of the little airdot.

I can't help but see it with Arthur. :) Or even maybe Douglas... Oh lordy, I remember little 8 year old me trying to explain to mum about all the colours I could see but getting a "be quiet and sit down" in return. :P

But I'd love to see the way they look at MJN. They sound so vibrant already. <3

This prompt is awesome and there are so many possibilities, simply because of the many different types of synaesthesia.

I have haptic->auditory synaesthesia, and I have to say that it's always interesting when people find out that I'm a synaesthete. And they always assume that I have the type where people see colors.

Anyway, this is a long-winded and rambly way of saying that I hope this prompt is filled!

Martin’s chair creaks (soft brown lines) as he leans back and lets out a slight yawn (translucent goldenrod speckles) as he listens to Douglas’ cabin address (rich deep aqua that cannot possibly exist in nature and is entirely unique to Martin’s consciousness because he’s never seen a colour like that anywhere other than in his mind.)

And then: takeoff.

Martin’s still in love with what he sees as the plane lifts off the ground. Not the slow sweep of clouds across the sky or the slow-shrinking version of the world below him, but the sound the plane makes: the look of the translucent white concentric circles layering upon one another, building and darkening as the sound grows louder. It blossoms and blooms and then starts to wither as their desired elevation is reached, shrinking into a low steady rumbling white line that serves as the base note of their flight.

The sound of GERTI taking off will forever be the most beautiful thing he’s ever seen.

He doesn’t think about it anymore, especially now that he knows that not everyone’s mind is constantly drawing up unique pictures of every sound. Once upon a time he used to think that everyone’s mind functioned the same way. That is, until one day he mistakenly informed Caitlin that he wished her name sounded less orange and she told him that she wished he sounded less completely and utterly insane. Although now he knows for sure that his visions aren’t the result of some latent madness, he still keeps them to himself, regarding them as just one more thing that sets him apart from the others.

He still sees it all: there’s the creaking cabin door (crackling green angles) and Arthur’s footsteps (gray-white diagonal lines) and his not entirely unpleasant laugh (an almost creamy navy blue, if such a thing exists) and the illuminated yellow gradient that blazes across his line of vision at the sound of Carolyn’s voice – although he doesn’t always care for the words she chooses to use, he rather likes the vivid chartreuse that inadvertently corresponds with them.

But, unlike the glorious white ripples of takeoff, there are some sounds that Martin doesn’t regard with such unflappable fondness: his own name is somehow pillow-y and jagged, complete with a white-glow halo. It doesn’t match. The sound of the M is much too pink and the muted N sound is a hideous burnt orange and the sharp snap of the kelly-green T is gratingly out of place. Although he’d sooner die than admit it, he likes what he sees when he hears Douglas’ name. It’s bright and full and the colours blend together perfectly, especially that lingering, glass-blue S – yet another reason to be jealous of Douglas. Even in the maelstrom of shapes and colours that reside within his mind, Douglas reigns supreme. He doesn’t begrudge Douglas for this one though, even though it sort of perturbs him that Douglas can win a game he doesn’t even know he’s playing.

“Post-takeoff checks complete?” Martin asks, immune to the low amber glow of his own voice.

“As complete as they’ll ever be, sir.”

And there’s that colour again, that almost stupidly decadent hue of blue-green that Martin only sees when Douglas speaks, that damn colour that sometimes makes him wish Douglas’ sentences went on just a little longer – yet another thought that, like the sound-portraits swirling in his mind, will never ever see the light of day.

WOW. This is so evocative and gorgeous - everything just fits so well - and I love the detail about his own name and Douglas'. Well done! <3

Ooh, this is really lovely. Plus on a slightly meta note, I love that a character on a radio show feels his world of sounds as a world of colors.

Great fic!

Beautiful! This was so lush with color and imagery! It's given me a new way to "see" the characters I love so much!

I especially liked your description of the take-off! Amazing!

(Also, on a personal note, the fic led me to a wee bit of online research, and I discovered that I 'Ordinal Linguistic Personification!' I didn't know there was a name for it! Woo-hoo! Fan fic promotes learning!!)

Very interesting, this! I like what you've done here.
Definitely.

I have a really strange thing like this where colours and numbers are blended and maths become super-hard because yellow+yellow don't equal red. Or things like that.

:I

Bah humbug.
