Prompting Post V

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

Welcome everybody. How you got here I have no idea but thank you for coming and welcome again, nonetheless . As you may have gathered this is a Fic Prompting Meme dedicated solely to the hilarious and oh-so-addictive BBC Radio 4 sitcom - Cabin Pressure. I'm aiming for this to be pretty anything goes - but in order for everything to run smoothly, there are a few guidelines. Don't worry - they're not too restrictive.

FILLING GUIDELINES

As you probably all know - our meme now has it's very own database created and maintained by the great Enigel. It both catalogues each and every prompt that we post and provides links to fills. You can find it here: Google Spreadsheet

We also have a Pinboard archive which has been put in place by the lovely [personal profile] oxfordtweed in the place of our late Delicious Archive. This Archive contains a list of all the prompts this meme has to offer - you can find it here: Pinboard Archive

This is a great step forward in making our meme just a little more organised (but not too organised of course. This is Cabin Pressure) which is always a good thing.

So in order to make things easier to archive - Please nest your fills.

This can be done by either posting each part as a reply to that part's immediate predecessor, OR by replying each time to Part I OR - well you get the idea :D

It makes it simpler for Enigel and myself to link fills in a clean and clear manner. Following these guildelines will be very much appreciated guys :D

REPROMPTING

Reprompting is allowed but please include the URL of the original prompt when you do so. It will make it infinitely more easy to Archive which would make both Enigel and I very happy :)

As for everything else

  1. Be respectful to one another. Disagreements are fine, but not everything disagreeable is trolling. If you suspect someone of trolling, just ignore it. If you cannot respond to a comment without attacking or trolling someone else, keep it to yourself.

  2. No bashing prompts. It might not be your cup of tea - but obviously someone wants it enough to go to the effort of requesting it. So just scroll past it.

  3. Prompt away as much as you like guys - seriously, go wild - but please try to fill as well.

  4. NEW - If your fill includes a major element that veers from the original prompt (crossovers, established universes, kinks, et cetera), please take a few moments to check with the OP that such additions are welcome. This has caused problems in the past and it only takes a few moments of your time.
  5. Please no RPF. I'm not trying to oppress you RPF writers and enthusiasts, I would just really like to avoid any legal problems.

  6. When you post a fill (or post a new part of a WIP) please go over to the Filled Prompts Post (if it is complete) or the WIP Post (if there are still more parts to come) and, following each post's guideline's, post a link to this fill or new part.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

+ Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Oh, you darling! Ok, think not of it as bugging but cheerleading. :D I really hope you're happy with it. It's a LOT more plotty than your original prompt. I mean, that's sort of the Macguffin, but it goes from there. But it does have lots of Arthur being darling and adoring and I tried to hit all the notes you asked for. ... Of a sort... I just got a little creative...

I'll work on it tonight. I'll try to start posting next week. I don't usually post until I've finished editing the whole thing, but I'll see how finished I can get it.

Hi! Erm, you alright? Just checking up with you and really not rushing you, take as long as you need! But I didn't want too much time to go passed the estimated post up date and have you think I'd lost interest.

Hallo, dear! I apprecaite your email, it's nice to be nudged. Story is coming along, slow by sure. Needs a lot of work, but definite progress has been made. I don't have a posting date, but I am continuing to work on it.

You said it was done three months ago. Where is it?

wow, really? Come off anon and talk to me like that. You're not my teacher, my guru, my mother, or my god-queen. I said I was working on it, not that I promised something that was due to you. I don't think you understand what a prompt is. It's not asking for a present that you are deserved just because your idea interested a writer. I also don't think you understand the level of work involved in writing a fic. Every page, that's 350 words, can take anywhere from 6 to 12 hours of concentrated effort. This isn't my job, I'm not getting paid to do this. And if I get stuck on a story, or I find it's not working, I move on.

So learn to fucking appreciate what does get written and finished and posted and fuck you very much if you think you're owed any more than that.

Whoah! I'm sorry to have offended you! I thought you might have posted it on AO3 and I missed the link, that's all!

I apologize for not being clear in what I was asking and I'm sorry and very confused that you found what I asked so offensive as to swear at me in such a way!

I didn't say it was done, I said I was still working on it. so what you were askign was, where is this thing that ought to be done by now.

The story wasn't working. It's being shelved. I may or may not go back to it. If I post it, I will post a link here because that's how it works.

(frozen comment) Re: OP

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
da

Then maybe you shouldn't keep posting about how you have a story and it's almost done and you're just working on it and oh just a little more time! in order to get all the encouraging comments along the way, which basically amount to nothing now. Don't post any comment until you're done a story or have something to post other than empty fluff, because that's how it works.

it's all right, don't worry about it. I probably should have asked before jumping to conclusions.

Sorry to disappoint you on the story. It just fell apart in the third draft. I'm working on something else now, it's up on ao3 under aura218.

There's no shame in shelving a story or not being able to complete a prompt. Writing isn't always easy or quick. However, you should stop announcing your involvement with a prompt until you're actually done, if you're offended someone might take you seriously when you say a story is on its way. Plus, other writers are less likely to choose a prompt, if we think someone has it covered.

if 350 words takes you from six to twelve hours, you need to find another hobby, because writing is clearly not for you

Oh thank GOD we have the god of writing here to tell accomplished writers they're doing it wrong. Nevermind that there's lauded, classic writers who have written a single book their whole career or ten books a year.

How many novels and graduate degrees in writing have you completed? No matter what you say, we'll never know, because you're too cowardly to stick your oar in uninvited off anon.

And since you refuse to answer anyone off anon, I will repost this for the anon up there, because I too am interested in your response to their logic, which I agree with.

Maybe you shouldn't keep posting about how you have a story and it's almost done and you're just working on it and oh just a little more time! in order to get all the encouraging comments along the way, which basically amount to nothing now. What say you, holder of graduate degrees in writing?

Because ... I also hold a graduate degree in divination?

I think you're accusing me of holding a graduate degree in being a soul vampire. B/c, ykno, that's what it is when you seek out creative collaboration and support. Fuck you for encouraging artists to toil in solitude and close down creative communication.

(Anonymous) 2012-11-05 05:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh for fuck's sake, come off it. You're not an artist and you don't toil. You write some fanfiction for fun as a hobby. Thousands of people do, and do it better, and don't give a shit what people say about rushing them. Move the fuck on and stop pretending we should all respect your ability to string some words together for free based on the original work of someone else.

Editing IS writing. Do you think writers put down the first thing that comes into their head, move around a few commas, and call it done? That's how you write essays in school, if you don't care about you English grade, now how you write a story.

Nonny came off entitled and demanding.

I'm off anon. i'm not talking to anyone else about this unless they are too.

Please keep bugging me is a direct quote from you when you kept teasing about the 21k you had written. Also, the irony of That's how you write essays in school, if you don't care about you English grade, now how you write a story. is delicious like the smell of a child's tears.

I know you're not talking to anons but I don't have an account and this is just too delicious: Do you think writers put down the first thing that comes into their head, move around a few commas, and call it done?

Yes. Very often. I'm a published writer and support myself with my books. Do you think I need to use tons of hours fixing one single sentence when I know what I'm doing?

I think, probably, aside from all the sniping what comes to my mind is this:

Why get so bent out of shape when you already know it's been shelved? You rather lose the ground to complain that people don't understand how long it's taking you, or what hard work it is, when you know you've already stopped working on it.

What's so hard about answering the nonnie with "Sorry, nonny, it didn't work out and has been shelved. Maybe someone else will have better luck filling it?" Which would have served the doubly duty of both answering the question and freeing up the prompt again.
