Prompting Post V

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

Welcome everybody. How you got here I have no idea but thank you for coming and welcome again, nonetheless . As you may have gathered this is a Fic Prompting Meme dedicated solely to the hilarious and oh-so-addictive BBC Radio 4 sitcom - Cabin Pressure. I'm aiming for this to be pretty anything goes - but in order for everything to run smoothly, there are a few guidelines. Don't worry - they're not too restrictive.

FILLING GUIDELINES

As you probably all know - our meme now has it's very own database created and maintained by the great Enigel. It both catalogues each and every prompt that we post and provides links to fills. You can find it here: Google Spreadsheet

We also have a Pinboard archive which has been put in place by the lovely [personal profile] oxfordtweed in the place of our late Delicious Archive. This Archive contains a list of all the prompts this meme has to offer - you can find it here: Pinboard Archive

This is a great step forward in making our meme just a little more organised (but not too organised of course. This is Cabin Pressure) which is always a good thing.

So in order to make things easier to archive - Please nest your fills.

This can be done by either posting each part as a reply to that part's immediate predecessor, OR by replying each time to Part I OR - well you get the idea :D

It makes it simpler for Enigel and myself to link fills in a clean and clear manner. Following these guildelines will be very much appreciated guys :D

REPROMPTING

Reprompting is allowed but please include the URL of the original prompt when you do so. It will make it infinitely more easy to Archive which would make both Enigel and I very happy :)

As for everything else

  1. Be respectful to one another. Disagreements are fine, but not everything disagreeable is trolling. If you suspect someone of trolling, just ignore it. If you cannot respond to a comment without attacking or trolling someone else, keep it to yourself.

  2. No bashing prompts. It might not be your cup of tea - but obviously someone wants it enough to go to the effort of requesting it. So just scroll past it.

  3. Prompt away as much as you like guys - seriously, go wild - but please try to fill as well.

  4. NEW - If your fill includes a major element that veers from the original prompt (crossovers, established universes, kinks, et cetera), please take a few moments to check with the OP that such additions are welcome. This has caused problems in the past and it only takes a few moments of your time.
  5. Please no RPF. I'm not trying to oppress you RPF writers and enthusiasts, I would just really like to avoid any legal problems.

  6. When you post a fill (or post a new part of a WIP) please go over to the Filled Prompts Post (if it is complete) or the WIP Post (if there are still more parts to come) and, following each post's guideline's, post a link to this fill or new part.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

+ Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

fake relationship

(Anonymous) 2012-06-01 09:24 am (UTC)(link)
Douglas takes Martin out to a friendly dinner during a layover, just because he doesn't feel like eating alone. When he comes back to their table after a visit to the toilet, he finds Martin not alone. There's a man at their table, Martin's age, who is apparently in the middle of an abusive rant aimed at Martin - that he'll never find someone, that his date must have escaped under pretense of going to the toilet, that he's as pathetic as he's always been etc.

Feeling charitable, Douglas steps in and introduces himself as Martin's boyfriend/fiance/husband, pleased to meet you, now please leave the love of my life alone and go away before I hurt you.

The man introduces himself as Simon Crieff and invites them both to Martin's mother's birthday dinner, which, conveniently, happens to be the next day, while they're still in town.

Seconded!
Me being me I of course hope for D/M in the end but I second seeing Martin in your scenario in any way!!

Oh, I'd definitely love a D/M ending as well! But I didn't want to restrict the potential filler, in case they prefer to write it as gen friendship fic :)

I completely agree. I really hope you (and we) get a fill ;)

WANT

Fill: Fake Relationship (1/?)

(Anonymous) 2012-06-16 01:41 am (UTC)(link)
(This is my first time writing Cabin Pressure fic, as well as my first time filling a prompt, so eek! Apologies for anything that's ooc, as well as any errors I might've made in the process of filling a prompt.)

Even from across the room, Douglas could see that whatever was happening at his table was not good. He'd only left for a few minutes to use the toilet, but Martin, being Martin, had somehow managed to incur someone's wrath in that time. Douglas sighed, shaking his head as he walked back towards their table. The closer he got, however, the more it seemed like the argument was different than normal. Martin looked...well, he looked even more pathetic than usual to be quite honest. Martin was slumped down in his seat, and he stared resolutely at his half eaten meal, while the man across the table simply looked smug. By now, Douglas was close enough to hear the conversation, and he didn't like it one bit.

“I-I am here with someone, I really am,” Martin stuttered, still refusing to make eye contact. “I mean, he's not here right at the moment. You can see that, obviously, but he's just gone to the toilet, and I-”

The stranger sitting across from Martin snorted, interrupting him. “Right, of course, he slipped out at the exact moment I happened to show up, did he? There's no shame is just admitting it, you know. You're here, eating a meal you probably can't afford, all alone. It's all right, we all knew this would be how you ended up, so no surprises there. It's pathetic that you feel the need to lie to me about it, actually.”

A protective instinct he hadn't even known existed rose up in him, and Douglas cleared his throat as loudly as possible. Hearing the noise, Martin looked up at Douglas, his eyes wide and shining wetly.

Douglas' original plan had just been to tell the strange man at their table to kindly bugger off and let him finish his meal, but looking at Martin's face, he was hit with the urge to not only tell the abuser off, but also to make sure he left with a higher opinion of Martin. After all, if Douglas was forced to be associated with Martin, he didn't want people going around saying he was pathetic.

“I have absolutely no idea who you are, and I don't care enough to ask,” Douglas snapped, turning his attention to the unwanted interloper, the beginnings of a plan formulating in his head. “But I'm exhausted from flying all day, and I'd like to just sit down and have a meal with my husband, and you seem to be getting in the way of that.”

Martin's eyes widened at the word, and he shook his head slightly. Douglas ignored him. Richardsons did not do things by halves, and he'd be damned if he was about to leave this unfinished.“It was a very nice meal, actually, until you showed up. Now I'm afraid the company has rather taken a turn for the worse. Anyway, it's very nice to meet you,” he said, his voice dripping with as much sarcasm as he could muster. “But now, if you could kindly leave, and let Martin, the absolute love of my life, and I enjoy our meal, I'd appreciate it very much,” he said, using his favorite tone of voice- calm, collected, and completely in charge.

Perhaps he'd laid it on a little bit thick, but really, it was just disgusting that someone would pick on Martin that way. It was like beating a small puppy. A small puppy with no self esteem, and a bad complexion. Besides, Douglas was the one who'd invited Martin out for dinner, if anyone was going to make fun of him tonight, it'd be him.

The man sitting in Douglas' seat did not leave. “Really?” he said, slowly his gaze darting between Douglas and Martin. Martin sank down even further in his seat at the scrutiny, now refusing to look at either of them. “Husband, you said?”

Douglas nodded. “I can't help but notice that even though I very politely asked you to leave, you're still here.”

The man laughed. “I'm surprised you don't know who I am, but then again, Martin and I were never very close. I'm Simon, Martin's brother.”

Oh.

Well, wasn't this an interesting and unfortunate development. Now that he thought about it, he could see the resemblance between Martin and Simon, although Simon was taller than Martin, and dressed much better. And if he really searched his memory, he was sure that Martin had mentioned having family in Wokingham. Damn.

“This is perfect timing,” Simon continued. “Martin, I'm sure you haven't forgotten when mum's birthday is? You're just in time to come to her party and bring your...husband.” Simon glanced over at Douglas doubtfully, as if he didn't quite believe that Douglas and Martin were married. Douglas couldn't blame him. He was, after all, a fine specimen of a man, whereas Martin was...Martin. Still, Martin wasn't half bad once you got to know him, as long as you didn't mind his obsession with planes, and his atrocious social skills. It wasn't completely ridiculous to think that he might snag someone like Douglas.

“Well-” Martin started to speak, but Douglas smoothly interrupted. Martin was nearly as a bad a liar as Arthur when it came down to it.

“I'm afraid we can't, Simon. We're flying out the day after tomorrow, very early in the morning. Sorry about that.” Unfortunately, he'd just have to see it through and keep the ruse up. There was no going back now, not without humiliating Martin further, which would be more than a little counterproductive.

“Perfect! The dinner's tomorrow evening. I'm sure I'll see both of you there, right Martin?” Simon said, practically oozing smugness in his victory.

Martin mumbled something noncommittal.

“It's just a casual thing, at home, you remember how to get there,” Simon said, apparently not bothered by Martin's unusual quietness, or the fact that Douglas was still glaring at him. “I'm sure mum'll be dying to hear how you met your husband, and I know you have an excellent reason for why kept him from us.” When neither Martin or Douglas responded, Simon's grin widened. “Well, I'll leave you two to your date now,” he said, finally slipping out from Douglas' seat, and walking away, leaving behind a considerably awkward silence.

I should not take such glee in Douglas's plan hitting a snag so quickly. And yet, and yet...

(Sorry for the wait! And thanks to everyone who took the time to leave such lovely messages. I hope you like this part! Also, I hope I've done the nesting thing right. Apologies if I messed up somehow.)

“Douglas, what the hell was that?” Martin snapped, breaking the silence between them.

Well, that wasn't what Douglas had meant to happen at all. Martin was supposed to be grateful that Douglas had stood up for him, not annoyed. Although, to be fair, Douglas could see where he was coming from. It wasn't often that one of Douglas' schemes went awry, but this one had tumbled rather spectacularly off the rails.

“There was no need for you to step in and ruin everything like that!” Martin said, his voice getting higher and higher pitched with every word.

“Of course there was, he was being an absolute prick,” Douglas said.

“That's just how Simon is! It was fine, really. Fine. We were fine. I had under control and now-!” Martin's voice broke slightly, and then he groaned, dropping his head into his hands. “Oh, God, now I have to explain this to him and mum tomorrow. I'll never hear the end of this. Why did you have to do this?” he moaned.

It was the break in his voice that had Douglas shifting uncomfortably in his seat. “Martin,” he said, as soothingly as possible. “God knows I'm not a man who enjoys admitting to fallibility, but I'm willing to concede that my actions made the situation worse.”

Martin snorted.

Douglas has known Martin long enough that he could sense the imminent breakdown. There were certain phases to it. First he would get angry, then he'd repeat himself incessantly, then stumble on his words, and if they were really, really unlucky, Martin would just say nothing and quietly panic to himself, essentially disappearing into himself to nurse his agony. Unfortunately, it seemed they were moving through the stages rather quickly, and considering he was the one who caused it...Douglas sighed, unable to believe he was about to suggest this. “You won't have to explain it to them Martin, calm down.”

Martin let out a high pitched laugh that was probably supposed to come off as disbelieving and condescending, but instead sounded panicked. “Oh, I'm supposed to just say we really are married, but you just couldn't make it to dinner?”

Leave it to Martin to miss the obvious solution. “No, you won't have to explain it them, because I'll go to the dinner, and pretend to be your husband.” It was a ridiculous idea, and he'd never live it down if anyone know, but Martin was looking spectacularly pathetic, and Douglas actually felt...guilty.

Martin stared at him, his mouth opening and closing slightly for a moment. “We can't do that,” he finally said.

Douglas snorted. “Of course we can! Who's going to be any wiser? If I say we're married, and you say we're married, it's not like they'll really question it.”

“No, but why would you do that?”

“Because your brother is an smug, condescending arshole. I know the type,” Douglas joked, gratified to see a ghost of a smile on Martin's face for a moment. “And there's nothing I love more than pulling one over smug, condescending arseholes. So, what do you say, darling?” he said, unable to resist teasing Martin some. “Oh, please say yes and make me the happiest man in all of Wokingham.”

Martin looked like he couldn't decide whether to agree to the scheme or punch Douglas. Finally, he spoke. “Fine, but if you tell anyone-”

Douglas waved aside his concerns. “As if I'd want word getting round about this. In fact, if anyone else ever finds out, I'll take it upon myself to ruin your life. But I don't mind if your horrible brother believes it for a night.”

Martin nodded. “Right. Okay.” He still looked unsure of himself, and now that Martin's anger was disappearing, the awkward silence threatened to return.

Douglas let it carry on for a few moment, before speaking as casually as possible. “Martin? Books and films that have a fruit in the title,” he announced. Martin glanced at him, momentarily confused. “I'll start. Grapes of Wrath. Your move.”

Recognizing the word game, a hesitant smile formed on Martin's lips, and he leaned back, obviously trying to think of one. If he thought Douglas was going to let him win though, just because he was being nice tonight, he had another thing coming.
