Prompting Post V

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

Welcome everybody. How you got here I have no idea but thank you for coming and welcome again, nonetheless . As you may have gathered this is a Fic Prompting Meme dedicated solely to the hilarious and oh-so-addictive BBC Radio 4 sitcom - Cabin Pressure. I'm aiming for this to be pretty anything goes - but in order for everything to run smoothly, there are a few guidelines. Don't worry - they're not too restrictive.

FILLING GUIDELINES

As you probably all know - our meme now has it's very own database created and maintained by the great Enigel. It both catalogues each and every prompt that we post and provides links to fills. You can find it here: Google Spreadsheet

We also have a Pinboard archive which has been put in place by the lovely [personal profile] oxfordtweed in the place of our late Delicious Archive. This Archive contains a list of all the prompts this meme has to offer - you can find it here: Pinboard Archive

This is a great step forward in making our meme just a little more organised (but not too organised of course. This is Cabin Pressure) which is always a good thing.

So in order to make things easier to archive - Please nest your fills.

This can be done by either posting each part as a reply to that part's immediate predecessor, OR by replying each time to Part I OR - well you get the idea :D

It makes it simpler for Enigel and myself to link fills in a clean and clear manner. Following these guildelines will be very much appreciated guys :D

REPROMPTING

Reprompting is allowed but please include the URL of the original prompt when you do so. It will make it infinitely more easy to Archive which would make both Enigel and I very happy :)

As for everything else

  1. Be respectful to one another. Disagreements are fine, but not everything disagreeable is trolling. If you suspect someone of trolling, just ignore it. If you cannot respond to a comment without attacking or trolling someone else, keep it to yourself.

  2. No bashing prompts. It might not be your cup of tea - but obviously someone wants it enough to go to the effort of requesting it. So just scroll past it.

  3. Prompt away as much as you like guys - seriously, go wild - but please try to fill as well.

  4. NEW - If your fill includes a major element that veers from the original prompt (crossovers, established universes, kinks, et cetera), please take a few moments to check with the OP that such additions are welcome. This has caused problems in the past and it only takes a few moments of your time.
  5. Please no RPF. I'm not trying to oppress you RPF writers and enthusiasts, I would just really like to avoid any legal problems.

  6. When you post a fill (or post a new part of a WIP) please go over to the Filled Prompts Post (if it is complete) or the WIP Post (if there are still more parts to come) and, following each post's guideline's, post a link to this fill or new part.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

+ Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

[[Finally an update, so sorry guys life has been really tasking on my health the past few months, I want to keep this regularly updated but it isn't working as well as I'd hoped! Anyway, those who read this, enjoy, there will be some kind of climax (no pun intended...) soon!]]

“At least the sun is out today.”

They were by the pool at the second hotel, having arrived a couple of hours earlier. The sun was indeed out and it was sweltering. Arthur was busy swimming (splashing with style) and Carolyn had wandered off to sit in the shaded bar area to read. Douglas was sat with Martin on reclining pool chairs, trying to pretend he didn't feel desperately awkward. He had tried to escape and sit in the hotel room but it really was lovely outside and after the small suggestion of staying indoors raised three separate outbursts from his colleagues and suspicion he decided acting normal was probably better. Douglas Richardson ran from nothing, so he told himself.

“And we don't have to sleep with Arthur snoring all night.”

Martin smirked next to him and Douglas felt a small flopping sensation somewhere inside the middle of him. The smirk fell for a second and a pensive look crossed the captain's face like it had been doing all day. Douglas tensed as he seemed to toy with the idea of saying something.

“I had this dream last night.”

Oh christ.

Out of his peripheral vision Douglas could see Martin was looking squarely and pointedly out over the pool and not at him.

“Really?” He said after a moment, cautiously questioning. It was good Martin couldn't see him because he felt his face heat.

“Yes.” He paused for a long while. “I was...swimming...shipwrecked, but swimming towards an island.” He was biting his lip.

“Oh.” Douglas felt he hadn't said all he wanted to.

“Yeah.”

He was glad to see Martin wasn't going to say much more, they lapsed once again into a weirdly stifling silence. So stifling was that and the sun that Douglas had dosed off and was snapped back into vigilance when Martin next spoke.

“You were there.”

“Where?” He asked casually, disguising his waking startle by sitting up, noticing Martin was fidgeting with his pool towel.

“On the island.” He swallowed thickly, folding the towel and piling his stuff on it. “You were...the only one there.” He stood with his things, avoiding Douglas's eyes. “You pulled me out of the water. S'cuse me, bit warm out here now.”

He left Douglas sat there before he even had a chance to say goodbye.

“Well. Bugger.” He muttered to himself, putting his poker face back on as Arthur splashed out of the pool and dripped towards him, wrapped in a large pink towel.

“Are you okay Douglas?” He asked, sitting where Martin had been. “Where's skip?”

“Sir got too hot, midday sun and all.” He gestured to the sky.

“Yeahhhh it does get a bit hard to breathe in the afternoon in some places like this. I have to put suncream on loads or my skin peels like a snake!”

“Lovely.”

Arthur lay back, pulling the towel further round himself, fidgety.

God it was spreading.

“Um, are you and skip ok? Or did you have a fight?” Arthur picked at his towel as he asked.

“Fine Arthur, don't worry.”

“It's just...it feels a little bit like it does when people have had a row but...a bit different at the same time.”

“Who knows, heat and gloomy weather does that to one sometimes.” Douglas dismissed.

“Is skip still upset about the landing?”

“I really don't know Arthur, he's probably just tired.”

“Because mum probably doesn't want me to say anything, but she was really upset when Martin did the wobbly landing too. But not because she was angry like skip thinks, she felt really sad for Martin just because it made him upset, she wasn't disappointed or angry about GERTIE. She was telling Herc...how Martin has got loads better at flying and she didn't want him to start doubting himself again now he's finally got a bit of confidence in himself.”

Well.

“He could probably do with hearing that.” Douglas sighed. “Shame our little company isn't exactly the best at expressing things, well, aside from you of course.”

“Aw thanks Douglas.” Arthur grinned, always happy to receive praise. “Though yeah, it's best when people tell each other stuff otherwise nobody knows what anyone thinks and everyone falls out with each other but they don't really know why and then you explode like a balloon that's been puffed up too much and it's all a bit stressful when it doesn't have to be.”

He knew that all too well.

“Doctor Shappey speaks again.” Douglas raised his eyebrows.

A shadow passed over them and Carolyn swooped into view to remind Arthur to reapply his sun cream before he turned red. She shared a look with Douglas, who nodded to her, before leaving them to find himself some ice cold juice.
- -

Carolyn had booked them three separate rooms this time, Douglas didn't quite know why as he remembered there only being one at first but he hoped it had something to do with the silent nod and look of utter gloom they had shared at the bar last night rather than some kind of motherly sixth sense. She was a little protective of Martin. She never used to be, in fact at the start they had all (bar Arthur) been quite hard on Martin, relentlessly pointing out his failures and teasing. It had been years now though and Martin had gone from being this annoying intruder to part of the family. And Douglas every so often notices the little shift in this four way relationship, how Carolyn slips up sometimes. He notices a fond look he'd previously only ever seen given to Arthur, the odd endearment here and there. The way she treated Douglas less like a co-worker and more like a friend, asking him to drop her son off like an older brother or look after him and Martin. And Martin had grown so much. He was still the same old Martin but he believed in himself a bit more now without all the effort of convincing everyone else that he did, badly. He'd landed the plane on one engine and saved them all. He'd matured, he was nice.

Nice.

Douglas stared at himself in the mirror, coming fingers through his grey streaked hair. Nice. Martin, nice. He was so young. Sure late thirties wasn't a boy by any means but Douglas felt so old sometimes. He was ridiculously vain, he'd hated growing up, getting wrinkles and greys, sagging in the middle. Martin wasn't even middle aged yet, no wonder Carolyn called him her boy sometimes like she did Arthur. Nobody was going to look at Douglas like he was their boy.

And he was glad really because that would be weird.

He left the bathroom mirror to return his shaving kit to his bag.

He knew he wasn't the only vain one. Well, Martin wasn't vain but he seemed to put a lot of effort into his looks and hygiene. Something Douglas suspected first came as habit when he was desperately trying to prove himself a smooth sophisticated proper grown up. Martin was a bit metrosexual that way anyway though, a little. He always had some kind of hair product, and a manicure set, face washes and moisturiser and of course the infamous nose clippers, and an eyebrow trimmer. He was neat, perfectionist.

Douglas grinned at himself, thinking of Martin at home with a face mask on and a glass of red wine, listening to some kind of power ballad.

That was just it though. Martin, not the typical straight man but not...gay. And anyway neither was Douglas. So that stopped that train of thought right there.

He zipped the bag up and sat back on the bed, taking in the small empty room and feeling rather a bit lonely. He wishes he had someone to throw fruit at, and that Carolyn would tell somebody they weren't a failure for everyone’s sake.

I can't believe I missed this! It continues to be brilliant, and I hope whatever issues are going on in your real life resolve themselves painlessly.
