Welcome everybody. How you got here I have no idea but thank you for coming and welcome again, nonetheless . As you may have gathered this is a Fic Prompting Meme dedicated solely to the hilarious and oh-so-addictive BBC Radio 4 sitcom - Cabin Pressure. I'm aiming for this to be pretty anything goes - but in order for everything to run smoothly, there are a few guidelines. Don't worry - they're not too restrictive.

FILLING GUIDELINES

As you probably all know - our meme now has it's very own database created and maintained by the great Enigel. It both catalogues each and every prompt that we post and provides links to fills. You can find it here: Google Spreadsheet

We also have a Pinboard archive which has been put in place by the lovely

oxfordtweed in the place of our late Delicious Archive. This Archive contains a list of all the prompts this meme has to offer - you can find it here: Pinboard Archive

This is a great step forward in making our meme just a little more organised (but not too organised of course. This is Cabin Pressure) which is always a good thing.

So in order to make things easier to archive - Please nest your fills.

This can be done by either posting each part as a reply to that part's immediate predecessor, OR by replying each time to Part I OR - well you get the idea :D

It makes it simpler for Enigel and myself to link fills in a clean and clear manner. Following these guildelines will be very much appreciated guys :D

REPROMPTING

Reprompting is allowed but please include the URL of the original prompt when you do so. It will make it infinitely more easy to Archive which would make both Enigel and I very happy :)

As for everything else

Be respectful to one another. Disagreements are fine, but not everything disagreeable is trolling. If you suspect someone of trolling, just ignore it. If you cannot respond to a comment without attacking or trolling someone else, keep it to yourself.

No bashing prompts. It might not be your cup of tea - but obviously someone wants it enough to go to the effort of requesting it. So just scroll past it.

Prompt away as much as you like guys - seriously, go wild - but please try to fill as well.

NEW - If your fill includes a major element that veers from the original prompt (crossovers, established universes, kinks, et cetera), please take a few moments to check with the OP that such additions are welcome. This has caused problems in the past and it only takes a few moments of your time.
Please no RPF. I'm not trying to oppress you RPF writers and enthusiasts, I would just really like to avoid any legal problems.

When you post a fill (or post a new part of a WIP) please go over to the Filled Prompts Post (if it is complete) or the WIP Post (if there are still more parts to come) and, following each post's guideline's, post a link to this fill or new part.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

+ Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

So I was listening to Limerick again and I noticed that the entire time Martin was talking about trying to find a date, he kept saying 'someone' or, mostly, 'they'. They would expect to be taken out, they would expect a captain to have money, etc. Never a 'her'.

Someone's playing the pronoun game!

So, basically, a fic where someone (probably Douglas, really) calls him out on it? (And Martin would probably get all flustered and lie badly and and and.)

Yes, I was wondering where the fic about that particular choice of words was hiding.

I have to say I didn't really noticed that. But now that you pointed it out - WANT PLEASE!

I'm glad others are pointing this out! He wants to meet "someone", but "they" would expect him to wine and dine them...

Basically, until proven otherwise I think Martin not being straight could easily be canon.

Having played the pronoun game myself in the past, I always wondered about this when I listened to Limerick. Glad someone else pointed it out!

Oh man, I would love him playing the pronoun game because he is bisexual. I have done that a fair share of times, not wanting people to jump to any conclusions, towards either end, but keep the possibilities open.

*pouts* I think I pointed this out somewhere else, and native speakers told me that it's not that uncommon to use the indeterminate "they" when talking about a [very, in Martin's case] hypothetical person, rather than a specific woman or man.

Otherwise, I want this very much, and would have taken it as support towards the theory that Martin is not "canon straight".

It's true, 'they' can indeed be used to refer to a hypothetical person of a specific gender implied by the surrounding context... but it can also be used when attempting to avoid defining a gender at all.

"They," Douglas says much later (while they are miraculously still over Russia).

"Hmm?"

"You said 'they'. 'They'd expect an airline captain to be able to wine and dine them'. Interesting choice of words."

"What, 'wine and dine'?" Martin asks. His voice is level but eyes keep flicking around the flight deck, never settling for more than a second or two. "It's a perfectly valid turn of phrase."

"Come now, Martin," Douglas admonishes, a smile creeping across his face. "You know what I'm getting at."

"No, I don't," Martin quickly replies.

"Yes, you do."

"No. I--"

"No," Douglas interrupts sharply. "I refuse to be dragged into some Looney Tunes-esque argument and the fact of the matter still stands-- you said 'they'. Not 'she' or 'a woman' or even the perfectly adequate 'fiery vixen of which the stuff of dreams are made'. 'They'." He turns, amusement clearly evident. "Why, one might think there is something weighing heavily on the good Captain's mind. Something, perhaps, that you might wish to share with the--"

"Oh, all right!" Martin bursts out, face flushed. "You've caught me, you've found me out, are you pleased with yourself? I'm gay, I'm a gay man, I am attracted to other men. I'm a poofter, a shirt-lifter, a pansy, a queer, a homosexual person. I am gay."

Douglas blinks. "I feel as though there's something you're trying to tell me, Martin."

Martin groans. Dropping his head into his hands, he mumbles, "Happy now? Building up a barrage of humiliating comments, are you? Thrilled with yet more ammunition against me?"

"Yes," Douglas says simply. He lets a few moments pass before laughing. "Oh, come now, you know me better than that. I'm pleased that you've finally said something-- lord knows I've been trying to get you to speak up for months now."

"Oh." Martin shifts, eyes glued to the blinking displays in front of him. "So you... don't mind?"

"Martin, I'll have you know that the thought processes I extend toward your love life are rapidly approaching nil. Gay or straight."

"Oh. Oh, okay that's-- thank you, Douglas."

They fall into a comfortable silence for a few minutes, content to watch their progress across the sky.

"If you won't try internet dating," Douglas eventually says, "I hear Fitton has a remarkable gay scene. A liberally-minded coffee shop might--"

"Douglas," Martin warns.

I am grinning hugely and entirely delighted/amused!

Douglas blinks. "I feel as though there's something you're trying to tell me, Martin."

Favourite line! And this was good! <3 I've been looking forward to a fic about the whole suspiciously worded "they" business.
