PROMPT POST PART IV
Please see the most recent MOD NOTE
(updated 6 June)
Welcome everybody. How you got here I have no idea but thank you for coming and welcome again, nonetheless . As you may have gathered this is a Fic Prompting Meme dedicated solely to the hilarious and oh-so-addictive BBC Radio 4 sitcom - Cabin Pressure. I'm aiming for this to be pretty anything goes - but in order for everything to run smoothly, there are a few guidelines. Don't worry - they're not too restrictive.
FILLING GUIDELINES
As you probably all know - our meme now has it's very own database created and maintained by the great Enigel. It both catalogues each and every prompt that we post and provides links to fills. You can find it here: Google Spreadsheet
We also have a Pinboard archive which has been put in place by the lovely
![[personal profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/silk/identity/user.png)
This is a great step forward in making our meme just a little more organised (but not too organised of course. This is Cabin Pressure) which is always a good thing.
So in order to make things easier to archive - Please nest your fills.
This can be done by either posting each part as a reply to that part's immediate predecessor, OR by replying each time to Part I OR - well you get the idea :D
It makes it simpler for Enigel and myself to link fills in a clean and clear manner. Following these guildelines will be very much appreciated guys :D
REPROMPTING
Reprompting is allowed but please include the URL of the original prompt when you do so. It will make it infinitely more easy to Archive which would make both Enigel and I very happy :)
As for everything else
- Be respectful to one another. Disagreements are fine, but not everything disagreeable is trolling. If you suspect someone of trolling, just ignore it. If you cannot respond to a comment without attacking or trolling someone else, keep it to yourself.
- No bashing prompts. It might not be your cup of tea - but obviously someone wants it enough to go to the effort of requesting it. So just scroll past it.
- Prompt away as much as you like guys - seriously, go wild - but please try to fill as well.
- Please no RPF. I'm not trying to oppress you RPF writers and enthusiasts, I would just really like to avoid any legal problems.
- When you post a fill (or post a new part of a WIP) please go over to the Filled Prompts Post (if it is complete) or the WIP Post (if there are still more parts to come) and, following each post's guideline's, post a link to this fill or new part.
NEW - If your fill includes a major element that veers from the original prompt (crossovers, established universes, kinks, et cetera), please take a few moments to check with the OP that such additions are welcome. This has caused problems in the past and it only takes a few moments of your time.
REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM
According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.
+ Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.
It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.
Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Re: Arthur and Snoopadoop
Fill: A Dog's Year
Carolyn knew one thing, and exactly one thing, that could consistently make Arthur grumpy.
There were things that could make him upset, obviously: visits from his father. Disappointing Douglas or Martin (although Lord knew why he needed approval from either of those clods). Someone looking like they were upsetting her. But these things would make him sad, or nervous, or upset, then the moment would pass and he would be fine again.
No, the thing that actively made Arthur grumpy was a lack of good sleep. And Carolyn knew this, because for a whole year during his adolescence, from age fourteen to age fifteen, Arthur had barely slept a single peaceful wink.
The emphasis being on peaceful. He had obviously slept, he wasn’t some sort of medical oddity. But it would take him forever to drift off, and his sleep was troubled and restless. Puberty was in full swing, with its usual complications, but those did not seem to bother him that much. No, the real issues were the things happening around him.
He had moved into the years when all of his classmates were outstripping him by miles, and the teachers were no longer quite so understanding about it, so a fair amount of anxiety had come from that. A few up-and-coming thugs were springing up and making his life difficult, causing a few truly twisted nightmares that he would recount over breakfast the next morning. And while he had never mentioned as much, Carolyn imagined it was probably difficult to go to sleep while listening to one’s parents arguing downstairs.
He had had some trouble sleeping before that year, but it had usually been chased away by his general contentedness with life, or at least by the glowing fish tank perched on his bedroom desk. Yes, one look at Flippyflop the Goldfish, and Arthur was automatically happy, content, and ready to float off to dream land. And he would wake up bright and perky the next morning, ready to tell Flippyflop all about his dreams while he carefully counted out flakes of fish food.
Which made it all the harder when, the day before his fourteenth birthday, he woke up to find that Flippyflop had gone belly-up and joined the great ocean in the sky.
“Arthur, darling heart, it will be alright, please don’t cry. Flippyflop was very old for a goldfish, and it was his time to go. We can get you another goldfish.”
“I-I-I don’t w-a-a-ant another fish! I wasn’t do-o-one with this fish!”
Never had a fish been given a more elaborate funeral. She still didn’t know how he had managed to learn enough Latin for a full funeral prayer. She had worn a black dress and Gordon had worn a suit, and they had both managed to avoid sarcasm for the entire service (although both walked away with sore tongues from biting them the whole time).
And that was pretty clearly when the sleep troubles had begun. From tossing and turning, to nightmares, to the occasional full-on night terror, Arthur Shappey was unable to get his rest.
Until they found her.
-/-
“Mum, Mum, Mum, please, please, please, please, please!”
“Arthur, you have to ask a question before you start begging. Why are you back from school so late? What’s happened to your uniform, and- Arthur, is that blood? What have you got in your arms?”
“Now, Mum, you really shouldn’t get angry at me, because I was doing a good thing!”
“Arthur.“
“I didn’t mean to get into a fight, I avoid them like you told me-“
“Arthur.”
“And I know that I need to pay attention to when there are lots more of them than me-“
“Arthur.”
“But they were kicking her and hitting her, and she just looked so sad!”
“I-…what?”
She had pried open the bundled up school jacket in his arms and found herself looking at the most miserable, trembling pile of canine that she had ever seen.
“She was whining really loud and I couldn’t let them keep being mean to her. Look, Mum, she’s just a puppy!”
“Arthur-“
“I’ll take really good care of her! I’ll take her for walks, and feed her all the best dog food, and clean it up if she has a wee in the house, and make sure she doesn’t have a wee in the house, and give her baths, and comb her fur, and do all the sorts of things you’re supposed to do for dogs!”
“Arthur, listen, I-“
“And I really think you should let me keep her, because she’s sweet and adorable, and when I was walking home, she licked my face, and I love her more than anything, and I named her Snoopadoop, and I want to be with her forever!”
“Arthur, if you will calm down for a moment, I can-…Snoopadoop?”
“Doesn’t she look like a Snoopadoop?”
“…I suppose, in a certain light.”
“Brilliant! You like her name, I’m sure you’ll like her, and she’ll like you, and we can all be happy and have a dog and run around in the park and have a dog and go to all sorts of things with our dog because we have a dog! Please, Mum? Please please please please please-“
“Arthur!”
“…Yes, Mum?”
“Are you going to let me speak now?”
“Yes, Mum.”
“Good, because if you had let a stray breath in during the course of those truly rambling monologues, you could have heard me agree to let you keep her about five minutes ago.”
-/-
He kept to his word over the years, mostly. He fed Snoopadoop, played with her, and took her for walks every day that they were home. He arranged for which of the neighborhood children would take care of her when they were away. He loved the dog fully and completely, and would do anything for her.
But he did not bathe Snoopadoop. Because every time he tried, he, the dog, the bathroom, and half of the hallway would come away sopping wet and coated in suds. So that became Carolyn’s job.
Every Tuesday morning, she would extract the sleeping dog from the bundle of sheets on Arthur’s bed. The first night with Snoopadoop, back in the old house, Arthur had nestled her tiny bandaged form next to himself and cuddled her to his chest until they both went to sleep. And the pattern had stuck, for every one of the intervening years.
Arthur Shappey had not had a nightmare since.
Re: Fill: A Dog's Year
This most assuredly brightened my day. Thank you so, so much!
Re: Fill: A Dog's Year
This prompt definitely caught me on a sap-needing day, and it was fairly easy to write, because I based it off of the sleep problems my brother had up until we got our dog. When fandom and real life meet!

You write brilliant Arthur and Carolyn voices, and aww, Arthur and his goldfish, but then Arthur and Snoopadoop! And I can just see the bathing scene. :D
