Good evening ladies and gentlemen (and good day to you too, inhabitants of the other side of the world). As always - this isn't a captain speaking but I come bearing news nonetheless.

It has been brought to my attention today(/night) by our good friend OxfordTweed, that a Chatter Post might work quite well for our fandom.

I'm inclined to agree with him.

As such, here you have a brand-spanking-new post to chatter, Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

- Please be respectful to one another.

- Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

- Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

On the heels of the mod post earlier today, I've been doing some thinking in regards to the meme. What do people think about a page for announcing off-meme fics?

On the one hand, there's already

cabin_pressure, which is where a lot of people post and announce fics.

On the other hand, it would give people a place to post fills that don't really answer prompts, but were inspired by them/deviated unexpectedly.

Thoughts?

I think it'd be unnecessary, because most of us watch the main com anyway, but also I'd be worried about the possibility of scaring off potential fillers. If there's a fill that's inspired by a prompt, even when it doesn't really fill it, it could still lessen the chance of a proper fill.

This is a discussion that goes over a lot on the Sherlock meme. About what scares people off of filling prompts, and "claims", a "first fill", and "an RTYI" are the usual answers.

At least sharing an inspired fic on the main com keeps it separate, by reinforcing the fact that it's all off-meme, whilst sharing them here could be kind of a big flag that kills off interest in the original prompt. Like RTYIs tend to do.

I thought it didn't matter if a prompt had more than one fill, though? I have certainly seen multiple fills.

There are multiple fills but lots of people also say they don't like posting a fill if there's already one there. I guess it's the feeling of not wanting to step on anyone's toes.

Personally, I haven't seen anything like that on this meme. When I go through doing the index on Pinboard, a lot of the stuff that gets marked as filled also gets marked with RTYI links and multiple fills. I wouldn't go as far as to say a majority, but a good percentage, at least.

I've always got the impression multiple fills were generally encouraged round here. I know I've certain seen plenty and written a couple myself.
But then I don't mind if they wander off on a tangent either; I always consider the prompts I post to be a starting point to inspire an idea, rather than a strict outline or a request for something really, really specific. If I want something really, really specific I'll usually just write it myself. Though I understand that not everyone feels the same.

FWIW, if fic has reeeally meandered off the prompt, I think the CP comm on LJ is the best place for it to go. But first I'd just ask the OP their opinion. If they say it's OK, leave it on the meme. If they say they'd rather not, post it to the LJ comm.

My personal view is that people are encouraged to also fill their own prompts (at least make it known that it's acceptable) as well as opening the prompt up to a wider filler-group. if they have their own, or deviated fill, they can prompt and fill, keeping it all in the same Prompt-fill format.

There could be a "self filling prompts post" but that would deter second fills.

I think it's improtant to keep it all in the one meme, though. *cuddles meme*

I think it's a bad idea. It's better to keep as many fills as possible in once place rather than scattered about everywhere.

Perhaps just encourage people to put their non-fill (and fill) fics there?

By 'there' I meant the LJ com, that is.

This fandom is too small for this to be useful. It would just be a redundancy of the main comm.

I think we need a culture of "the more the merrier" and encourage writers to ignore claims or even completed fic. Write everything, because the more the merrier.

I think writers could announce their fic here or post a similar prompt and self-fill. No need for anything fancy pants.
