Martin catches his first officer at a weak moment and witnesses the rare sight of Douglas Richardson losing control of his emotions/his temper/the situation.

After the initial tiny feelings of relief and satisfaction that even Douglas Richardson cannot cope with everything as it comes to him, Martin is horrified. He doesn't gloat, or mock, or hold anything over Douglas's head (yet). He steps in and does whatever he can to help put things right and restore balance to the universe.
