Martin becomes very calm for a few days. They take a flight somewhere, nothing flusters him, he seems at peace. When they land back at Fitton, and Martin tries to present Douglas with his Captain's hat, saying he'll be moving on soon, and he wants Douglas to have something to remember him by.

Douglas recognizes the signs and is absolutely not having any of it, which is when everything falls apart.
