Ok, there's an amazing contemporary poet out there called Richard Siken, and rereading some of his stuff today, some of the lines seemed to stick out rather bizaarely as being related to Martin. (which could be one sign that I've maybe been reading too much CP fic...)
" You said I could have anything I wanted, but I just couldn’t say it out loud. Actually, you said Love, for you, is larger than the usual romantic love. It’s like a religion."
For some reason in my head, this is how Martin loves, and maybe why he's not a captain of a thousand stewardesses like Douglas was in his prime; not only because, well his luck's not really that great when it comes to forming romantic connections, but because when he's been in relationships before, he's gone into it with his whole heart bared open, giving his soul to it, and its never turned out happily - he's been hurt or used, or people he thought loved him didnt snd left him heartbroken. Maybe now he's wary about any relationship because he knows how much he can get hurt.
Anything with this really. It was just a thought :-)
