Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Martin's Financial Situation

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
"I don’t have a salary. Look, when I had my interview with Carolyn, it wasn’t to be captain, it was to be first officer, and by the end I ... I could see I wasn’t gonna get it, so I said ... last-ditch try ... I said I’d work for half of whatever she gave the last guy, and this funny light came into her eyes and she said, “A third,” and I said, “No,” and there were some pretty heavy negotiations and ... we agreed on a quarter, only then when I was leaving she said, “How little would you take to be captain?” and after some more ... negotiation, we decided I would be captain and ... she wouldn’t pay me at all. My salary is nothing. And three times nothing is nothing."
-Martin in "Gdansk"
http://cabin-pressure.livejournal.com/26462.html

I feel like this is something I tend to forget in discussions of Martin's financial situation: he had the opportunity to be a paid pilot at MJN. A quarter of the salary of "the last guy" is probably close to nothing, but it is not nothing, and Carolyn was apparently prepared to pay it at that time. MJN might not have lasted these five years with Martin being paid, and the situation seemed to change so that Carolyn could no longer even offer that, but there was a point in time where he could have gotten financial gain for flying GERTI.

And he turned it down in order to be Captain.

It fits perfectly with Martin's character at the beginning of the show, and he has clearly grown since then. It's just something that stops me from feeling as bad about his situation as I could.

Re: Martin's Financial Situation

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how flying hierarchy works, but it may well have been better for him to take the captain position for nothing than take first officer for £3000. That's not nothing, but it's pretty close to it.

Britpick-School Systems

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I'm an American here, considering writing a fic about Douglas' medical student years, but I just want to check something here before I get too deep into it.

So in my area of of the US, the educational steps to become a doctor are:
Elementary school: ages 5-11
Middle school: ages 11-14
High School: ages 14-18
College: ages 18-22, usually
Medical School: any age after college

Here is my understanding of how the British system works, but I really have no damn idea:
Primary school: ages 5-11
Secondary school: ages 11-18
University: 18 onwards

Is that correct? And if you are studying medicine in university, that makes you a medical student? There's no separate school for that?

Re: Britpick-School Systems

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
Not British myself but Wikipedia has a handy age and school name grid for ages 3-18
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Education_in_England

The universities entry isn't nearly as helpful but here it is.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universities_in_the_United_Kingdom

And here's the page for medical school
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_school_in_the_United_Kingdom

Looks like they go straight into medical after secondary school, and it's very competitive to get in, so at some point, Douglas had to really want in, because it doesn't sound like something you just slide into for a laugh.

Roger Allam's official fansite

(Anonymous) 2013-02-16 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I just saw Roger Allam's fansite and it's DREADFUL. It actually has the line 'Roger Allam is one of those actors who seems to be in a lot of things but no-one really seems to know who he is' on the first page. Ergh. And it seems to have been made by a scary middle-aged woman who has just learnt how to use clipart. Can someone please hurry up and make a site to do the man justice!

Re: Roger Allam's official fansite

I think the Lemons and Landmarks girl (who's a massive Allam fan) is creating a new one. I remember seeing something about it on Tumblr.

How much man with a van for survival?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
I'm trying to figure out how much man with a van work Martin must do in a month to survive if he's getting 10 pounds an hour, but I have no idea what the costs of living in Fitton might be. He's got the van to maintain and insure, and I think he has a cell phone in one of the episodes?

If he lived around here in a shared house, he might be able to scrape by on 40 hours a month, and survive reasonably on 70 hours a month. Does that seem about right?

Re: How much man with a van for survival?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-17 07:46 am (UTC)(link)
Minimum wage is £6.70 I think? Ish.

A shared house room rental is between £70 and £90 a month

Road Tax on a van is over or about £160 a year. I doubt Martin's ever claimed on his insurance so that's probably around £400 a year.

I work 8 hours a week at a £10/h job and going from my expenses Martin could probably just about get by without too many more hours a week.

The Herc/Carolyn love

[personal profile] cleo2010 2013-02-18 11:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm absolutely adoring all of the Herc/Carolyn prompts at the moment. In how many fandoms do you get a couple in their late fifties as one of the most favoured pairings. Let alone a pair like Herc and Carolyn. If anything, me hoping Carolyn will ask Herc to stay (and fly Gertie for free) is a bigger cliff hanger than Martin's choice.

It was the moment that Carolyn mentioned how walking her dog was a good way to meet people that I started to fall in love with her. I fell completely in love during Ipswich when she said 'I have a safe pilot and a good pilot and I've put the safe pilot in charge of the good pilot'. That really showed she was clever and not solely thinking about the bottom line.

I'd write more but I allowed myself the duration of the printing I needed to do to post.

Heres to a little Herc/Carolyn love in.

Re: The Herc/Carolyn love

(Anonymous) 2013-02-18 01:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been posting a lot of the H/C prompts, but I'm really glad that others have been as well. Totally agreed about their relationship being the bigger cliffhanger. When he called SA his new firm, I squealed a little, I won't deny it.

I kind of loved that Herc's age was stated to be 56. If Carolyn was 63 in Helsinki, she's between 66 and 67 now, a potential eleven year age gap. I just don't recall ever seeing a canon ship with a woman so much older that was not being played for laughs or gross-outs.

I did not ship them right off the bat, strangely enough. It took a few times through Ottery St Mary to really get a hold of their dynamic, to see that both of them were playing it like a game. But when I did started shipping it, I started shipping it with a vengeance. Plus the two of them teamed up against Douglas is always fun.

I'm very sorry but the two people who' had done the updating recently - Tiwtin and I - are indeed not doing it any longer.

My short statement regarding this is here:

And I think Twitin's reasons were similiar.

You could always ask the mods of course.

Quintessential ______ in Fic

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 06:55 am (UTC)(link)
What are some fics that you felt got the spirit of something in the show completely right? Characters, pairings, episodes, or anything CP, what were the fics that hit the nail right on the head? Why did they work so perfectly? Did they change how you felt about the canon, or just deepen your love?

Re: Quintessential ______ in Fic

(Anonymous) 2013-02-19 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
My french ear is rusty, and I know it's a Swiss place name, but does BC's pronunciation of "Yverdon-les-Bains" sound like he's saying "hiver dans la bain" or "winter in the bath" in French to anyone else, or just me?

Re: Pronunciation

I hear it as 'eever-dans ley-bain' but both S's in les-Bains would be silent anyway.

Favorite line deliveries

(Anonymous) 2013-02-20 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
Line deliveries as in how they were said, not necessarily the line itself.

Example from St. Peterburg, Martin saying "Looblin to Dooblin?" Something about the was he says that makes him sound like a 5-year-old scamp trying to get away with something sneaky.

Does Finnemore own Cabin Pressure or does the radio network own it or does someone else? Just curious.

The BBC owns it. Writers have the rights to credit and royalties.

Hello!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 08:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I had no idea so many people lurked here of a Sunday! How are you all and what are you up to?

Re: Hello!

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm good. I'm just waiting around and making food. People are coming to watch the Oscars later tonight. I'm not that interested in them, but friends and food are always good.

How are you today, anon?

Douglas and Women

[personal profile] linguini17 2013-02-24 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Are we still doing spoilers for the new series? If so, space for Y...

Douglas seems to know that the answer to the "you see your captain in a red dress" question is designed to weed out sexism, but he's of a generation which generally didn't/doesn't treat female pilots well. Do you think he honestly doesn't care if a pilot is female, or does he just know the right answer to the question?

Re: Douglas and Women

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think he'd particularly care. I think he'd be generally respectful (in a Douglas way), maybe with moments where thoughtless assumptions and comments shine through (a la Herc).

A Very Important Issue

Who has the sexiest voice on the show?

Re: A Very Important Issue

They all have their moments, really. When they're trying for sexy I'd have to say Douglas waggles my wings the most.

Is it safe to iron bacon? to use a travel iron for food products? Wouldn't it taste of whatever chemicals Martin might use on his clothes?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-24 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Ironing bacon is one of those tried and true hotel cooking things. Basically you wrap meat in foil and put the iron on the highest setting, so the iron never comes in contact with the meat, and it stays moist.

CP-CDs from AudioGo

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Has anybody bought the single-season CDs from audiogo? I was wondering if these are the same as you get on amazon etc. (meaning: they also have the pretty booklets with notes and stuff I have seen pictures of on tumblr) or if audiogo has special slimmer versions.

(I am really tempted to ignore the fact that I don't have the space and buy the CDs instead of simply the downloads and as audiogo has them noticable cheaper than amazon I wanted to make sure first)

Re: CP-CDs from AudioGo

(Anonymous) 2013-02-26 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I imagine the packaging is the same, as it's a BBC CD, being sold through both outlets.
Bear in mind though, that Molokai is not on any of the individual season sets, it's ONLY on the 'Complete' 1-3 box-set edition... and that doesn't have the inserts.

So unless you get both, it's a toss up between inserts or Molokai.
