Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Hardest character to write?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-10 06:38 am (UTC)(link)
Which of the characters do you think is hardest to write?
I used to be terribly intimidated by Douglas and thought I'd never get his voice right but now I think I can manage that somewhat decently.
However now I'm stuck in a fic at a place where I need Arthur to appear and I'm not sure how to do it...I think there's a fine line between Arthur being his usual cheery self and it all turning a bit annoying and I'm worried that I won't get it right...

For me, Douglas. I haven't been able to get a grip on where his crusty charm and smarm shell meets his chewy and vulnerable under-layers. I haven't tried my hand at Carolyn yet though, and she intimidates the hell out of me.

That's the sound my tv made when it decided to bugger off and break down on me.
Now I"ve got no tv to watch. Oh well, I hear it's best not to watch a ton of tv.
I'm glad my computer is working though, alternate TV shows here I come!

A theory

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Consider Martin Crieff. A modestly talented man reduced to working for free for an Auntie figure so that he can do what he loves. The established man he works with resents him, despite the fact that he's not a threat. In fact, his style of work is completely different from the other guy, even though it's just as effective. (Also a little envy there on Martin's part, don't you think?) At the end of it, the Auntie figure admits that without his efforts the company will fold but that he should go anyway to fulfill his life's dream.

Conclusion: Martin is John Finnemore's efforts to be a paid comedy writer. That's why all his dreams get to come true.

Second Conclusion: Arthur is Benedict Cumberbatch.

Re: A theory

(Anonymous) 2013-02-11 02:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I can mostly see where you're getting your first hypothetical conclusion from... but the second one is baffling me.

Are Hog Lumps or whatever they're really called the same as pork rinds? Pork rinds are puffy leftovers from lard rendering that are crisp and salty and taste of bacon, but I get the impression the British version are harder. Do they have the skin on?

Nervous fliers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
So, with Y coming up, I'm getting nervous for my own reasons, as I'm sure other people are getting nervous for their own reasons. How about we cuddle together in this thread and try to be less nervous together without arguing about the reasons?

Has anyone got a word game?

Favorite authors and least favorite things in a fic

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
I've just discovered Linguini's stuff on AO3 and I absolutely love her writing style. It's really understated but powerful and, though she writes quite a lot of Douglas whump, there's never the sense of 'whump for whump's sake' which you get from some stories where it's included as a sort of filler.

Which brings me to dislikes: I really don't like stories- particularly long ones- where the writers are plainly floundering for a plot line and so hurt a character (Martin, generally) for no reason i.e. there's a circumstance where Martin has everything going right for him after a period of things going wrong and instead of rounding off the h/c and concluding 'suddenly Martin is attacked by a mad man wielding a shark' or whatever.

I'm also not at all fond of fluff for fluff's sake- though I'm fine with it as the part of a bigger picture, fluff on its is just too much- and I really dislike OCs and Cabinlock (particularly Martin / Douglas). Don't much care for Dom / Sub verse, either, but they're fairly easy to avoid as I think they're written by pretty much the same people and the stories tend to include pretty much everything I dislike in a story anyway.

Woah, that's a lot of dislikes. I've just been proof reading papers so I think I have my negative hat on.

Re: Favorite authors and least favorite things in a fic

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so bad with names...there are a few authors I've read several fics of and enjoyed them but right now I can't remember who they were...

I feel like my list of dislikes will also be long...one the one hand I do love Angst and h/c but I don't like it if some really serious things happen to a character and everything just keeps getting worse and then in the last chapter it gets all turned round and he's perfectly fine again (often that's combined with Character A and B finally getting together and then the power of the All Healing Cock will make everything go away...so I generally also dislike Angst as means to get two characters together).

I don't like Omegaverse and dom/sub verse and am generally careful round AUs (though I've actually read a few CP-ones I enjoyed) and I don't read death-fics.

Cabinlock is another thing I'm on the fence about...I've read some where Martin and Sherlock just looked similar and found them quite nice but I yet have to find a fic where they're actually related that convinces me.

Sorry, confused here, I keep reading that tomorrow is CP last episode (which will be Y) but I also keep hearing that Zurich is the last. Can someone end my confusion, please?

Re: Last episode

(Anonymous) 2013-02-12 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
There are six episodes in Series 4, the last of which is Y. Z would be the logical end, but it's either being saved for a holiday special, or being left off to leave the series open ended, or something else. Only John Finnemore and the BBC know for sure.

Well, they're often diverted and/or late but their crash record is impeccable. So, not if I was on a tight schedule, but they seem to be pretty safe.

Plus bonus cute pilots.

Major Spoilers Below

Well I guess that answers the question of whether or not there's going to be more Cabin Pressure, which I'm happy about obviously, but I am a little ticked at JF for leaving us with a cliffhanger ending when he's never done anything of the sort before and it means a whole nother year of waiting to find out what happens, if we're lucky that is, it could be more. And it still doesn't answer the question of whether or not he's going to continue the series after finishing the alphabet. He could always just do Z as a Christmas special and that could be the last episode. It's all very frustrating.

Apart from the cruel ending I rather liked this episode though. It was a shame we didn't get more Arthur, but Douglas, Martin, and Carolyn were all great and while Herc didn't do much it's always nice to see or rather hear him on.

Well, that was disappointing

I'd been hoping that there might be one episode where every conversation that every character has is not somehow centered around Martin... but no. The Martin show it is

Y spoilers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
This is an unrepentantly positive post. Sorry.

Things I loved-
Herc panicing over Arthur's allergic reaction.
Douglas getting annoyed at the mis-use of Skip's nickname.
"He's not MY Captain!" I am still shipping them hardcore.
Dragonfruit! This is a brilliant game!
Martin as the king of tetbook-reading nerds.
That big speech, because I am a sap and I adored it. (Though I have very conflicted emotions over getting an offer from any company that would call someone all the way to Switzerland and get their hopes up only to accuse them of cheating and tell them they never had a chance.)
But mostly... So much personal sacrifice, and that's what's really getting me; Douglas, Arthur and Carolyn would all be letting go of MJN and would all suffer at its loss but they still pulled out the stops to give Martin a good reference and flew to Switzerland just to pick him up and see how it went... and he knows that... and that's what really did me in. He's so close to getting his dream, but doesn't know if he can do it at the expense of everyone he cares about.

tl;dr
I really loved it. And shouted at my radio. But in the good way.

Re: Y spoilers

(Anonymous) 2013-02-13 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
One of my favorite bits was the fact that they chose a cabin crew at 'random' to give evaluation on Martin and that random person drew in an extra box and wrote 'Brilliant' on each one. Squee!

Okay, is Herc a vegan? Because vegetarians can eat cheese. I'm a vegetarian and I hear this all the time, and it always confuses me. Are you carving your cheese out of the side of the cow?

Yeah I thought the same thing when I listened to it. I'm a vegetarian as well. Is it possible that in England vegetarians are usually assumed to be vegans as well?

Before series 4 I was completely in love with CP, listened to all the episodes on repeat, even had the t-shirt, and now after this series I can't even bring myself to listen to the old episodes because I know that the new ones exist and that I'll be miserable. Ah well, who needs things they love, right?

'Martin's Dream'

(Anonymous) 2013-02-14 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Series 4 didn't feel like an actual series of Cabin Pressure but rather a dream Martin had in which he got a princess for a girlfriend, gave his brother what-for, got a job as a pilot on the basis that he admitted he wasn't a very good pilot and the whole of the rest of MJN's worlds started revolving around him so that they can only have conversations which somehow involve him and mysteriously drop everything to be at his beck and call. Personally, I'm hoping that by 'Z' he'll have woken up and everything that I used to love about the show will be back again.

Y spoilers: just take the damned job

(Anonymous) 2013-02-14 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't a rant about characterization or about Martin. It is more about that thing where characters are expected to remain stuck forever in the same situation - basically because the fans want them to be there. Martin should just take the damned job. He needs the money, MJN may go under at any moment, it's good for his career, it should improve his self-confidence to work with a much wider range of pilots and on more modern aircraft. The ending really annoyed me. Maybe JF is hedging his bets on BC being available, maybe he's fan teasing, but taking the universe of the sitcom at face value I just want to shake Martin and tell him to look out for his own best interests.
I feel the same way when Trek fans demand that none of the core crew move on at the end of any Enterprise tour. So Uhurua, and Spock, and Bones, and Sulu and Chekov must never accept promotion because it is just that awesome to serve under Captain Kirk?
Life moves on, friendships can endure through change. Just take the damned job.

We've made Mr Finnemore sad!

I think we all need to apologise for this ridiculous behaviour and reaction to Yverdon Les Bains, and the whole of series 4.

Obviously Mr Finnemore hasn't intended on ending Cabin Pressure, we have overeacted to end of the Alphabet. Lets cool down, calm down, enjoy the episodes and stop picking on the writer.
