Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

reprompting

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Is reprompting from earlier posts acceptable? Not the one that just closed of course but from 1 through 5. There are a lot of excellent prompts back there that got some seconding but no fills that could do with some new attention.

Yes, but you should link back to the first prompt.

I need a title for Omega!verse fic

(Anonymous) 2013-01-16 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Hi! *waves enthusiastically*
I'm doing the fill for the Omega!Verse fic on the second page of the current prompt meme.
I need a title. I don't normally write without one, because that's just how I am, but I can't think of any good titles that describe the situation going on in the fic.

All suggestions welcome.
I need help even just talking about titles in general and stuff may boost the muse. :)

SPOILERS for this series

(Anonymous) 2013-01-17 07:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm really enjoying Martin standing up to Carolyn this series. Well, I don't know if I would call him scheming with Douglas in Timbuktu standing up to her, but it was definitely defiant. Then of course Uskerty he puts his foot down to her at the end. Yay Martin!

He's gotten a lot more confidence in general I'd say. Even his bleating about crime in T seemed more irritated than panicked, for the most part anyway. I like it.

SPOILERS FOR USKERTY

(Anonymous) 2013-01-17 08:07 am (UTC)(link)

~

~

I have to ask. How common is it for someone to have a family signet ring in the UK? Particularly someone whose dad was an electrician that left an estate to his kids consisting of 10,000 pounds and a van full of tools. It seems like it's more of a higher social order thing, and it's making me wonder if Martin's family has some secrets or if Martin's been telling the whole truth about them.

If they're common as dirt, then that's fine, but it's just making me wonder if there's some big bizarre reveal coming, like Martin's family is some obscure impoverished branch of nobility. But don't tell me if you know for sure anything about future reveals. I'm just asking about the rings.

Re: SPOILERS FOR USKERTY

(Anonymous) 2013-01-17 09:21 am (UTC)(link)
Common as dirt. In both sense of the word common, you can pick up an (admittedly ugly) but allegedly gold signet ring from Argos for under a hundred quid. There was (still is?) a point where working class men of a certain generation liked a lot of gold jewelery. Even if they were living on benefits it was a status symbol. I mean look at Del from Only Fools And Horses- gold chain and sovreign rings, living in a council flat selling junk out of a van. It fits a working class stereotype, and an East-end gangster stereotype, probably more than an upper-class moneyed one. If Martin's dad had been wealthy it's unlikely he would have bothered buying a signet ring for himself. He either would have inherited one or considered it kind of... tacky. They fell out of favour in the middle and upper classes simply because they were so popular with working class wide-boy types.

Real, beautiful antique rings are, yes, probably more limited to those with families who have had money at some point. But you don't have to be rich to have one. If Martin's dad was an electrician from Wokingham, I'd have pegged him as quite likely to have some jewelery, though it may have been mass-market high-street stuff.

Wondering About Herc, Spoilers for Uskerty and Timbuktu

[personal profile] straydog733 2013-01-17 10:22 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if it's just because I'm on a Herc binge at the moment, but I'm wondering: we've had Herc name-checked in both new episodes, but he has yet to appear. It's a nice way to keep the audience reminded that he is a recurring character, but I'm wondering if it's building to something, either good or bad, between him and Carolyn.

Or maybe Anthony Head was just busy, who knows? Herc exists in this weird in between space where he's not a main character, but since everyone else is either a one-episode character, only mentioned now and then (Carl, Dirk, ect), or Mr. Birling, he gets to seem way more important than he is.

Re: Wondering About Herc, Spoilers for Uskerty and Timbuktu

(Anonymous) 2013-01-17 10:41 am (UTC)(link)
I guess they mentioned him in the last couple of episodes (both times firmly in relation to Carolyn) in order to keep the character fresh in the audience's minds? Seems likely he'll be back. If JF hadn't intended him to return, he'd just have been dropped without mention, I think.

CD question

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 09:09 am (UTC)(link)
OK, I have a question.

I splurged on the individual series CDs because I wanted the inset graphics that came with them. Arthur's doodles and Douglas's little black book and so on...

Am I being blind or is Molokai not included on either S2 or S3? I don't see it listed and haven't had time to listen to it all through just to check. But has buying it this way left me essentially Molokai-less?

I know it's included in the big collected 1-3 box set, which would have been cheaper but lacks the graphics... so I was kind of assuming that as the christmas special between seasons it would have been included somewhere with the individual series. :/

Re: CD question

(Anonymous) 2013-01-19 08:38 pm (UTC)(link)

Who would sit beside you, pat your hand and say, "Aw, it's alright; you're only doing what you think is best, you just need to remember to enjoy yourself as well. Here, have a bit of Toblerone."

Yeah.

History of passenger aviation question

(Anonymous) 2013-01-20 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Google is not helping so I thought I'd ask here where there are some aviation-knowledgeable folks about. When passenger flights first began, were there any restrictions about bringing children or babies along?

Re: History of passenger aviation question

(Anonymous) 2013-01-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
How early are you talking? I don't know about the earliest, pre-WWI flights, (in practical terms, probably not, but it was likely a common sense and cost thing rather than a pilot's prohibition) but by the time pressurized cabin aircraft and established commercial airlines came around circa 1940, there was no reason you couldn't buy a plane ticket for your child if you were obscenely wealthy.

BBC Synopsis for the Upcoming "W" Episode (Spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-22 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Spoilers for stuff on the BBC website

So the BBC website has the listing up for next week's episode, "Wokingham" (yes, knew it!!!). Here's the synopsis from the website:

"When his Mum falls ill, Martin has to deal with a sister, a van and a moustache. Meanwhile, Carolyn and Douglas become locked in a game that can never end."

And in the cast list, there are listings for Wendy, Caitlin and Simon Crieff. So what are everyone's predictions/hopes? Is this going to be a week full of whump and backstory? Will Carolyn and Douglas banter be able to lighten the mood, or will they get some drama of their own? Are Simon and Caitlin really as bad as so many fics make them out to be?

All this, and more, cannot be answered here, but isn't it fun to think about?

BBC auction nonsense Tv show Antiques Road Trip just stopped through Wokingham. It actually looks quite pretty there. I don't know why this surprised me so much, I think Martin's impression of his dad with a faux-cockney accent rather threw me off into imagining something a bit ore grubby and urban.

Spoilers: Question about Vaduz

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Spoilers below.

In Vaduz they have to fly round and round the holding circle and Carl says that he hopes they don't get dizzy. For me that brought to mind Martin's inner ear condition, although he said it was perfectly flight worthy and he didn't seem at all concerned about it in this episode, I was just wondering if anyone could explain to me why it wasn't a concern.

Re: Spoilers: Question about Vaduz

(Anonymous) 2013-01-23 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a pressure concern. In Ipswich, his concern was going into the water, because pressure against the inner ear whilst under the water is different from when you're not in the water. Aeroplanes are pressurised, so there's nothing up there that can muck it up too badly.

Also, the holding pattern isn't a terribly tight circle. He's not likely to have got dizzy at all, and I thought Carl was more making fun of Arthur than anything.

Then he's also the pilot. Unless you are Jeremy Clarkson, it's said to be physically impossible to make yourself motion sick. If he's flying the plane, he knows where it's going before the banks are ever made.

So I got into a conversation about this on Tumblr, and I was curious what other people thought: how did you feel about Herc telling Carolyn he loved her? He seemed to be pushing pretty hard for her to say it back, which can come across as either manipulative, or something she personally needs before she will take any steps.

I wasn't glad about it until he revealed that he was thinking about moving for work, then it resolved nicely. He seems like he is very comfortable in his life, moreso than someone like Douglas, and a shake-up like a potential redundancy would make him want to grip onto things important to him, even if he grips too hard. So pushing for her answer still wasn't great, but it made a lot of sense.

I ship them like crazy, I just have to reconcile the snarky charmer with the four-time-divorcee.

Re: Herc in "Vaduz" (Spoilers)

(Anonymous) 2013-01-24 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
I think it was totally appropriate for their combative relationship, and Carolyn's absolute stubborn refusal to say how she feels.
I don't think it's because she doesn't love him back, because I think she does and I think Herc knows it, she just refuses to say the words. Like everything in their relationship, they will strong-arm each other until someone wins.
And as you said, the conclusion of that storyline made it clear why he was pushing so hard. He loves her and she loves him but if she's never going to let their relationship progress he has the rest of his future to think about and a very limited timeframe in which to do it.

Martin or Benedict?

In light of Martin's seeming canonical lack of ability to do a good accent, I'm wondering if it's that Benedict can't do accents or if it's a character choice for Martin. Is there anything Benedict's been in where he puts on an accent other than as Martin?

There's his American accent, starting at 0:49.
