Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Less that two weeks is it?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-28 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
How and when will the new season be distributed internationally? Does it become available from Amazon or iTunes quite fast?

Re: Less that two weeks is it?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-28 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
The iPlayer for radio is available internationally anyway. You can listen online either live as it goes out or as soon as it's uploaded to the Listen Again features.

How did you come across Cabin Pressure?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-28 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the things I always love finding out from fans is how they came to be fans in the first place.

For me, I went to see Roger Allam as the flamboyant (singing) transvestite in La Cage Aux Folles way back in 2009 and was immediately enamoured and sought out everything with him in that I could, CP being one of those things. I was hooked from the first episode I heard.

Via being in the Sherlock fandom and getting so annoyed at all the Cabinlock crossovers that I finally gave in and found it on YouTube. Oddly, I still find Cabinlock annoying, but from the other side now.

A Helpful Guide to Prompting

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
It seems like the fill to prompt ratio has been steadily declining around here for a while, and not all of that can be put on writers leaving the fandom. Writers look for prompts they want to fill, but if none call to them, they won't fill out of a sense of duty.

You can make your prompts appeal to a wider range of fillers by making sure the prompt has enough information in it.

1. Give us more than a sentence. Martin does X or Carolyn does Y is the epitome of id-prompting. Id-prompting is fine, and that's what memes exist for, but there's nothing to be had from these tiny little scenarios. They're so small that the prompt practically fills itself. If you want Martin to do X, add in a Y and a Z to follow.

2. Don't give us a wall of text. It's all about balance. If the prompt goes on for so long that it might as well be an outline for a fic, it will probably not be filled either. Starting with Martin does A and leading all the way through Z is far too restrictive and may put people off.

3. Give plenty of options. Martin does X because of Y and Z. Then Carolyn or Douglas find out. How do they react? Does Martin try to brush it off as nothing or beg for mercy?

4. Make sure it's not been done before. People get bored with the same scenario over and over again. Maybe Martin should do P or Q instead. But at the same time, if you want him to do Å or Ø, people might not see it as being completely in-character for him. Å or Ø might be fun, and can probably even be pulled off, but you may want to do some of the heavy lifting to fit it into the universe of pilots and a failing charter company.

Prompts are seeds; they should have all the relevant information to get the story going. You put them out there, and if you're lucky, they'll grow into something pretty. But the seeds need to be able to grab hold of something in order to grow, or else they'll just flutter about for all of time.

Problem

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Kay guys, I just started a new job. And so far, all of my co-workers have been cool, kind people. No prob.

But today as we were talking about actors in Jane Austan movies, my co-worker said, "Yeah, Iit's weird, I like British actors but I hate the British." (Then proceeded to say the same thing about Canadians)

And I kinda stood there, stunned. Was that suppose to be a joke? I didn't know what to say and considering this is a new job, I don't want to start a fight over a tasteless joke. But it's been a few hours now, my shift is over, and I still feel really uncomfortable.

I NEED this job, but I don't want to stand there and say nothing. Got any advice?

Re: Problem

(Anonymous) 2012-12-29 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you British? It seems like that's a situation where a little humor would point out your co-worker's gaffe, ie: "Well, I'm British and I think I turned out okay." If you're not, and this was just a conversation you happened to overhear and the coworker wasn't speaking directly to you,I don't see what you could do in this situation that won't make you come off as whiny. Sometimes people are going to say things that make you uncomfortable. You don't have to have a relationship with this person outside of work, so keep it professional, and if she makes discriminatory comments to you directly, just be straightforward and tell her you don't like to have conversations about putting other people down. Obviously, if she's actively discriminating against other people she works with, it should be brought to the attention of HR. But you saying something to her is unlikely to change her mind about how she feels about British or Canadian people. Chalk it up to her small-mindedness and move on.

Could anyone rec any good Carolyn or Douglas h/c fics?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
I was listening to Cabin Pressure on a long drive and I had a bit of an epiphany (or just realized that I'd been a bit dense before). I always read Martin h/c because I thought it was the most obvious choice because Douglas and Carolyn seem so strong (and Arthur so cheerful) whereas Martin gets himself into all manner of trouble in canon. Listening again, though, I saw that C and D are most of the time only pretending to be stronger, which actually makes them weaker / worse off than Martin who's willing to be open about his troubles (which are actually not as bad as they first appear, particularly when you compare him directly to sacked / three times divorced / wife had an affair / alcoholic / doesn't see his daughter / now in junior position Douglas). Sorry if that was really obvious ages ago to the rest of you!

I've found a few good Douglas ones, but they mostly seem to be from an age ago.

Re: Could anyone rec any good Carolyn or Douglas h/c fics?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-30 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't feel bad, anon :-D I saw Martin as the most obvious h/c character first time I listened, too, but then re-listening it wasn't so obvious, after all (he's 'living the dream' after all- I think JF said something about not feeling too sorry for him because he gets to do his dream job?) Anyway, Douglas and Carolyn (Arthur too) also have A LOT of problems and old / fresh wounds which I think become more and more obvious the more you listen. The show's so beautifully nuanced, it's one of the many reasons I love it! It's good, though, because I'm a h/c addict. As for recs, sadly there aren't too many Douglas (and especially Carolyn) h/c fics :-( I wish there were more- Martin whump is brilliant, but variety is the spice of life.

Mature question

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, the newest prompt made me think...

Is piercing the penis just an aesthetic thing, or does it help in sexual pleasure? I know if done correctly, piercing the clitoris can contribute to self-stimulation, but the penis? Hmmm...

Re: Mature question

(Anonymous) 2012-12-31 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how much a penile piercing helps the man's sexual pleasure, but it can certainly add a stimulating dimension for his partner.

New CP is within our grasps! How are you peeps going to celebrate it? I probably have to work during the premiere, so I would have to wait till I have some time to myself to listen it off the BBC website.

My plan is simple. A nice cup of hot tea (or a cool refreshing soda) headphones and a half hour to myself. Do you guys have anything special? Paramount hats? Talisker whiskey? Toblerones? Paper and pencils to write down prompt ideas?

I've just done a mini-fill for someone on Tumblr and I'm sort of in the mood to write more! Are there any Carolyn/Herc (gen, fluff, smut, nothing too dark) prompts out there that you'd like to point my way? I started going through the prompt post but I thought maybe others would know of specific ones. I can't promise to fill them all but I'll definitely do some!

Should I Prompt?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I have this idea for a CP fic in my head that I meant to write myself, but the way things are going I don't know if I'll ever get around to it.

So I was wondering if I should post the idea for someone else to give a go or hold on until I know for sure if I am or am not going to write it myself?

Re: Should I Prompt?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 01:13 am (UTC)(link)
I guess you should look at how you feel about the idea.
If you absolutely love it and you want to write it, just put it into your idea folder until such a time as you've got the time to write it. If you don't feel that way, go ahead and prompt.

Predictions for the news series

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 12:20 pm (UTC)(link)
If there are spoilers in this, I'm magical. These are just predictions based on released information / spoiler free reviews / previous knowledge, so we'll see how it goes. I'd be interested to read anyone else's predictions as well!

- 'T' episode (Timbuktu): well, this is what we know- 'Hooray hooray, it's Birling Day once more, where the crew traditionally swap their dignity for cash! But where have all the camels gone? And why is Arthur reading a book?'

'Birling Day' means rugby (Six Nations, to be precise) so 'Timbuktu' is hardly the destination that would have sprung to mind, especially with 'Twickenham' being a far more likely rugby 'T' connection (though not one that even Mr Birling would need to fly to, unless he happens to be somewhere other than the UK to start with and MJN need to pick him up?)

In any case, lack of rugby aside, there's another reason for Timbuktu being a somewhat unlikely destination: there's a civil war in Mali. Now, of course, we're never actually given dates with Cabin Pressure- the episode could easily be taking place in a past or future in which flights to and from Timbuktu would occur without issue- but I like to think that the current climate will play a part somehow, especially with John Finnemore's fondness for topical satire.

Anyway, since I doubt even Douglas will be able to stop a civil war, they're unlikely to actually be going there (unless the show suddenly takes a turn for the dramatic and they get caught up in the conflict somehow... wishful thinking. I'll leave that in the hands of fanfic writers!) So, onto the next part of the description- 'where have all the camels gone'- well, there are a lot of camels in Mali, but, as discussed, they can't really go there.

I don't know, maybe they get lost and end up somewhere else which could be 'Timbuktu' for all they know but Arthur once read a book (can't help but think that in Douglas's voice 'a BOOK') about Africa and knows it can't be Timbuktu because there are no camels? Either way, Arthur + book = trouble (and lots of random facts).

- Martin: I'm not sure where the 'U', 'V', 'X' and 'Y' episodes could take place. A lot of places beginning with those letters are very tricky to say, though I imagine that would be more of a point of humour in the recordings than anywhere else. For 'W', though, I'm going to guess at 'Wokingham' since that's where Martin's from, and I've heard read that this is very much a Martin series. If it is, this probably means that Martin's family will feature. Though it seems to be fanon that his family are either not that close or downright horrid, I've never really seen them to be anything other than supportive but concerned that Martin might be setting himself up for failures. As such, it's my very real hope that his family is... just your average family, with its ups and downs, sibling rivalries and petty annoyances but at the heart of it basically loving.

On the topic of Martin, the show's been building up to a point where it could essentially be re-named 'The Evolution of Martin'. Last series he managed to ask someone out and land GERTI on one engine (both of these things would have been impossible for him in series one) so I think this series will move things one stage further. Since it's been flagged up several times that Carolyn WOULD pay Martin if she COULD (but she can't), I don't think the evolution will come in the form of an MJN employed Martin being paid (unless Gordon dies and leaves his money to Arthur? But then that would very much be the end of the series because there's not much comedy in 'everything going right'). As such, I think Martin's going to at least be offered a job elsewhere. I also think it possible that he'll get himself a girlfriend- maybe these two things will be linked somehow?

- Carolyn: she's becoming more and more convinced that the end is nigh for MJN, and if their unpaid pilot leaves, it probably will be. In many ways, I think she'd be relieved. Battle-axe she may be, but she clearly doesn't want to be in a position where she can't pay a pilot, especially one she's (reluctantly) fond of. She is the C-E-O (dashes for appropriate Carolyn emphasis) and is proud to be so, but as 'Alpha Dog' she knows she should be able to provide for her pack, but she can't afford to pay them all. Both her professional and, though she'll never admit it, maternal instincts would be screaming at her that she's doing the wrong thing by Martin but she can't quit, so she's got to hope for either a) a money miracle b) a disaster which leaves GERTI out of action or c) Martin getting another job. There is, however, a bright Herc shaped light on the horizon...

- Herc: ah yes, Mr Sheep-phobic himself. I'd be willing to bet a limb or two that he'll have a fairly major role in the new series (and I can't wait!) Now, crucially, he is not only Carolyn's absolutely-not-boyfriend, he's also a pilot. Could it be that he'll be taking over from Martin if he gets another job? There are two issues with this: 1) will he work without pay / would Carolyn's pride allow her to ask him to do her that favour? 2) would he be the Captain? This second point leads me rather neatly on to...

- Douglas: just as the series progression has charted the 'evolution of Martin' we've also seen 'the crumbling edifice of Douglas'. He begins the series demoted, yes, but by far the better pilot and happily married (despite past marital failures). As the show goes on, we find out that he has a daughter he seldom sees, that he can't drink because he's a recovering alcoholic, that his wife's had an affair, etc, and not only that, with Martin becoming more and more competent (both in the air and in situations on land) Douglas's 'purpose'- that is, both to the plot and to his own sense of self- is fading. Though I imagine he'll still be needed, on occasion, to save the day, I can see a lot more of the plans coming from Martin's mouth as he comes into his own, his whole life ahead of him, and Douglas dwindles.

I'm not sure if this was from a recording review, a preview or a Q and A, but I believe it was mentioned that Martin hadn't had many girlfriends and people 'aww-ed' out of pity- however, I'm going to make a perhaps radical suggestion that that isn't 'awww' worthy at all, because it seems to prove that a) Martin is capable of having relationships and his social anxiety doesn't always get in the way b) he has had long term relationships. Giving Martin's sticking power, I imagine that the reason he's has so few girlfriends is that he went out with each of them for a fairly long time. What's to pity about that? Douglas, on the other hand, has had 'more than you can possibly imagine' but can't keep hold of one. I'd argue that that's fair more likely to deserve an 'awww'.

We have also learnt that, though Douglas may tease Martin and not mean it to be malicious (nor is it taken to be so by Martin, who's reactions are those of the pout-y sibling rather than the tormented victim), he himself has very thin skin and can't cope with being teased himself. This is partly because much of the 'Douglas' he presents himself as is a construct, and we have seen enough glimpses of his 'deconstructed self' to know why he fights so hard to keep up his front. With Martin, he can generally manage to wriggle free of the possibility of teasing, but from Herc? We've already seen him evade comments from him, but would he be able to do that in a flight deck with Herc as his commanding officer? If things go that way than there's sure to be trouble ahead for our favourite FO.

- Arthur: oh Arthur. How I love thee. After seeing what a dick his father is in St P, I really hope for some Arthur bonding with his PROPER dads (Douglas and Herc). I also hope that many things will be BRILLIANT and that he'll come to the rescue with his strangely expressed but extremely intuitive insights.

I predict John Finnemore is never going to do a try out again, and will have recordings without an audience from now on to prevent people leaking spoilers.

THINGS THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN IN SERIES FOUR.

(Anonymous) 2013-01-03 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Trot out your worst, best, crackiest, least likely theories about Series four. NO SPOILERS, NO ACTUAL SPECULATION. Ridiculous ideas only.

Examples:

-Snoopadoop will fly Gerti.

-Martin will be revealed to be an alien, and also Mr. Bean's cousin.

-Carolyn will acquire a harem of nubile gymnasts.

-Herc will take up gymnastics and be drafted by the Cirque du Soleil.

-Douglas will marry himself.

-Carl the ATC at Fitton will publish his tell-all book "Sh*t Pilots Say"

-Arthur will get a Nobel Prize in astrophysics, and no one will be surprised.

Should we have a countdown?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
Five days, 14.5 hours until Series 4 airs!

(I think, I am bad at time zones)

Pre-Series 4 plans?

(Anonymous) 2013-01-04 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
I'm going to have a Cabin Pressure marathon, with a real cheese tray and boxed wine and everything!

Anyone else have pre-flight squee boosting plans?

*looks at mountain of notifications*

I am finally going to un-track all the posts from this meme, as I've been promising myself for months now.

Then I'm going to listen to the whole series from A to S and try to un-learn all the fanon characterisations.

Then, who knows? I might even squee again.

What the...

I'm sorry, but have I just witnessed someone be discouraged from posting prompts and fills on a PROMPTS AND FILLS MEME.

Seriously, what harm was being done. It was a bit of fun that has sadly been ruined by one anonymous person who I strongly suspect is not over the age requirement.

It's been on and off for a while now, but that is the last straw. This meme is too hostile now. I, for one, am done.

It's been fun. Goodbye.

Hey Chaps

(Anonymous) 2013-01-05 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
I'm a bit of a lurker on here (and a bit of a stalker on Tumblr)- there are some great CP blogs on there and one of my favorites is thepudupudu's- she's the one who came up with the lemon project and I sent in my lemons and loved taking part!

Anyway, I've just seen that she's in hospital having chemo and I thought maybe we could do something for her to wish her a speedy recovery. I know things have been a bit... fraught... on here for the past few days, but the lemon book was really an example of the fandot coming together to do something brilliant.

It really shows what we're all capable of if we pull together, and I think pudu did a very good thing for us, John (his face in the video!) and for charity.

Oh that's a lovely thought. Any ideas? I'd be happy to join in. (I don't have time to co-organize anything because I'm working on a CP-related project with, yes, Pudu. (And she's working on it too, in her hospital bed, I mean, really). She definitely deserves some CP fandom love.
