Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Someone on the rant meme mentioned that he's got a lovely penis. Excuse me for dying from extreme sexual fantasies.

As someone who's seen him in the altogether in two plays, yes. Yes he does. And a bloody nice everything else, for that matter. And he's a wonderful kisser. And if you tell him it's your birthday he might demonstrate this *blush and cough*

WTF?

[personal profile] wheresmycow2 2012-12-09 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I posted a comment to a story (not here) this afternoon, asking if they would please warn in advance that it was Martin/Molly, because, well, I didn't expect it and I really liked the first part of that fic with Martin and Douglas chatting away. But my comment got deleted and there's still no warning.

Is it really so much to ask to actually tag a story so readers won't be disappointed?

Re: WTF?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-09 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You are being completely unreasonable, yes. You don't warn for pairings. I don't like that pairing either, and it sounds like a bait-and-switch, which is still sort of douchey, but if someone came onto one of my stories and told me to warn for a pairing, I'd delete the comment too.

I love modern medicine, I love having a doctor that finally listened to me, and I love having a medication that works. My head's clear of the anxiety and depression, and at the same time I'm not dopey or emotionally numb, for the first time in years. Decades, maybe my whole life. It's like taking my head out of a bucket of shit and having a clear rain wash away the mess. Everything is beautiful. I just had to tell someone.

I met John Finnemore today.

I gushed at him.

We talked about the changing demographic of CP's audience & schedule difficulties, and about the Elephant & Castle sketch off Souvenir Programme.

Then I got HEROICALLY drunk and fell over in front of him & Mark Evans.

And had to be helped up by both of them.

I'm just so fucking proud of myself right now.

I've realized how much I've started to appreciate Roger Allam in the past several days o_0 I mean, apart from his doubtlessly awesome voice, he never really stroke me as a magnificent man until these several days ago, and I have not the foggiest why

And now I really wish to cuddle him =D

...I wonder if something's wrong with me. Wanting to cuddle men twice your age might still count as alright, but thrice?

Re: The new recording!

Here is one person's experience on both recordings. They've been very kind to not put any spoilers: no character names, no episode names, no details of the plot.

HOWEVER, they do give the names of the guest actors and occasional (unknown) line where the actors had to rerecord. So take heed those who want total silence of the whole thing.

"My duty's to the Law"

(Anonymous) 2012-12-23 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
Roger Allam in "Les Miserables" Original London Cast 1985. This is heaven

His Javert is perfect! I've listened to and watched other actors as Javert, but none of those Inspectors is as not-underestimated by his actor as RA's.

Long shot, I know, but maybe someone knows where one could find a full video of 1985 musical? I only know a single "One Day More" snippet :'(

A different type of fill?

[personal profile] turkfox 2012-12-23 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Would it be acceptable if I posted fills that were comic strips of photos of Playmobil?

I recently got hold of the "executive jet" and I'm repainting it as GERTI, so I convinced my parents to get all my Playmobil out of their attic today. Turns out that I have waaaay more than I thought - including all sorts of accessories, vehicles, buildings... I've got Snoopadoop, the sheep that scared Herc, the cat that scratches Arthur, even Martin's van!

I write a lot of smut but I find gen quite difficult. If I could fill as photo stories, I'd be able to do the gen stuff - photos with a few sentences of caption each.

Would that be weird? Would people be disappointed to see "ooh, I've got a fill!" then find out it was that?

Comments on fic in CP fandom?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
What's a 'good' number of comments on fanfic for this fandom? I've just arrived and I'm not used to a fandom this small, so I don't have my barometer of 'everyone must think what I wrote is crap' calibrated yet.

Re: Comments on fic in CP fandom?

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
Don't know about comments, but on AO3, I get worried if the amount of kudos is less than 5 percent of the hits. Ten percent or more is good, IMHO.

Martin is NOT a woobie

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 03:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I saw this on the Sherlock rant meme and I have to say I agree http://sherlock-rant.livejournal.com/7028.html?thread=55175540#t55175540

I can see why fluff addicts might be into Martin / Henry or Martin / Molly (though, personally, I find it all far too twee), but what on earth does Martin need to be 'protected' from? Some people have also implied that they don't like Martin / Douglas on the basis that they think Douglas wouldn't take good enough care of Martin... because obviously that's what relationships are about, one partner acting like a parent towards the other... or they imply that Douglas would be 'abusive'. I'm sorry, but no.

I know that people like him to be the subject of pretty much all the whump in fic, but in canon he really isn't. In fact, I'd say his general lot in life is a lot better than that of the other characters, and that he's on an upward path- gaining in confidence and ability as the show progresses- whereas Douglas, for example, is on the way down (he started out with a wife, at least, now he doesn't even have her).

I'm not saying that I think Douglas is a woobie, either, just that I don't understand how people can go on about the need for Martin to be 'cuddled' (constantly) but they very rarely say the same about the other characters. Surely if you're into seeing characters as victims, there's lots of room to see Carolyn, Arthur and Douglas in that light as well? They might not be as 'pretty when they're hurt' but that doesn't mean they're not.

Re: Martin is NOT a woobie

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 04:59 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* I'm not a huge fan of woobie!Martin either, and you're right, in canon at least he's really not that badly positioned. Poor and socially inept, yes, but not destitute or abused. But you're forgetting that canon and self-created fanon are not the same thing. Characters diverge in the fandom's collective perception, and get coloured by populist tropes that are self-reinforcing. Martin is pretty much the de-facto fandom twink, the tearful uke for those coming from a manga background, the most overtly lacking in self-confidence and the easiest to get into trouble of his own making. Which in turn makes him the one most easily pasted into the role of the helpless victim and thereby increasing woobification.
It feeds on itself and becomes an accepted and acceptable (if not outright expected) interpretation of the character. The more people write it the more it becomes legitimised, and then you end up with Woobie!Martin.

My personal solution is to write not-woobie!Martin when I can. But you're rather swimming against the tide of whump with that grumble to be honest.

Keep on swimming

Random trivia

(Anonymous) 2012-12-24 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Aside from Martin, do you know what else came out of Wokingham in the 70s?
The UK arm of the Ideal toy company. The people who brought you MouseTrap and KerPlunk based their UK manufacturing output in Martin's hometown.

Somewhere in the back of my head I'm sure there's a promt in there, I just can't think of one.

Isn't there some flight-related connection in Wokingham as well>

suicidal fic

When a fic has a suicidal character and a detailed method of suicide using easy to get materials being enacted, is a warning enough? Should I change the method to be less real world possible or less detailed? I don't want to provide anyone with an instruction manual. :(

Re: suicidal fic

(Anonymous) 2012-12-28 09:07 am (UTC)(link)
While suicide is, imo, one of those things that should always carry a warning, anyone who is considering it will already know what to do. Your fic isn't going to be an instruction manual for anyone.

Just a thought

(Anonymous) 2012-12-28 12:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I usually just lurk on the chatter post, but I've noticed a bit of a trend. If people post 'unpopular opinions' they often seem to be met with patronising responses and it just doesn't seem very... kind, I suppose.
If their opinion is somehow morally objectionable, then by all means 'let the bastard have it with both barrels' (to quote Carolyn)but if they're just expressing a frustration or whatever, it's a bit unfair to belittle them and make them feel that their opinion doesn't count just because it differs from your own / that of 'the mass'.

To take the recent 'woobie' post, it's plain that a lot of people like Martin whump- which is fine, and they get to express their like of it by writing / reading stories about it, seconding prompts and generally having a grand old time in the fandom as a whole. For those who don't, though, they can't respond to the prompts or stories saying 'do not want' without being rude, so they move on. It's a bit futile to tell someone like the 'woobie' poster that if they don't like something they should scroll past it, because it's quite obvious that's what they have been doing (and they're frustrated because they've been doing far more scrolling than reading). They might prompt something they want, but that doesn't mean that the prompt will get filled (or even seconded)- you can be pretty certain, too, before you say 'prompt something different' that they already have done and just haven't had the prompts filled. And not everyone who likes fanfic is a writer, so they might not want / be able to write their own.

The above example is just the most immediate one I can think of, but it applies elsewhere as well: if someone is upset about something, then that something is important to them. It doesn't matter how trivial it might seem to you, to them it isn't and I just don't think it does anyone any favours if you try to shame them into not expressing themselves (and where else would someone be able to talk about a Cabin Pressure related woe than on a Cabin Pressure forum?) Of course if you have a different opinion, express it, but there's no need to be patronising or cruel.

Good grief. Anons are not special snowflake woobies for having "unpopular" opinions. They aren't entitled to cuddles for complaining.

CD question

(Anonymous) 2012-12-28 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
For those who've bought the individual series CDs of cabin pressure, not the big box-set of all of them, which season is Molokai bundled with? Series 2 or series 3?
