Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

I love you guys

I just wanna say, I love you guys.

I love this meme, I love the weird and crazy stories and prompts we put out, I love all the different headcanons, the art work, the friendships we've made, the tears we shed, the squees and the back-throwing sighs. CP ended today and while we'll continue to be here for a little while longer, I'm glad to be a part of this cabin crew.

Thanks for flying MJN with me, you lovely people you!

sudden moment of self awareness...

[personal profile] diminua 2015-01-13 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's a random thing I noticed and I was wondering if anyone else had the same experience.

I was reading a fic earlier from the heady days of 2012 which had Arthur saying 'gonna' in a sentence - and my knee jerk mental reaction was, as usual: 'No, sorry, we Brits don't say gonna'. Only, then I thought: So what do we say? I'm certain I don't walk around saying 'I was going to' in received pronunciation. So I tried the sentence experimentally, and after a few passes I came to realise that I absolutely do say gonna, and so do many, many of my compatriots, and it's only because we don't write it like that we think we don't say it.

So, just out of curiosity - has anyone else had this experience of conflating written language with spoken language and thinking because it looks strange on the page it's wrong?

Primarily if I'm trying to represent an accent in text, which I mostly don't do anymore except through word order and choice ow because the other way looks wrong and is hard to read (unless it's for comic effect: "Ah doo not 'ave an outrahgeous Franch accent... doo ahy?"). I do tend to limit 'gonna' and 'wanna' type constructions if the character is from the UK, unless I can clearly hear the character saying it that way in my head.

Sorting Hat

(Anonymous) 2015-01-26 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
If the characters were at Hogwarts, in which houses would they be?

Re: Sorting Hat

(Anonymous) 2015-01-28 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
The temptation to put Arthur in Hufflepuff is obvious, and I do think it suits the character. He is the 'force of helpfulness and cheeriness' for the team, after all. He has his braveness, but so do Hufflepuffs now and then when needed, it's just not their primary motivator.

Douglas seems Slytherinish in the 'motivated primarily by personal gain and not picky about how he gets there', and all Slytherins aren't evil, or they'd all be packed off to some sort of rehab or therapy as soon as the hat sorted them. He's also motivated by being the problem solver and having the cleverest scheme as an answer to every problem, and that's rather Ravenclaw. He also stands up for his friends and pitches in for the team when the chips are down, but most of the time he's doing it exchange for a future favour. Probably Slytherin, but I doubt he'd have joined up on Voldemort's team willingly.

Carolyn has a bit of the quixotic element of Gryffindor, but her motivation of keeping the airline running is quite self-focussed so Slytherin a bit, particularly at the outset, but then in the end that's not the case. I'd put her in Gryffindor.

Martin's truly epic study skills and dedication to learning about aviaton makes him very Ravenclaw, but with strong elements of Gryffindor turning up now and then, breaking the rules when it's necessary to help the team etc.

Just my opinion though, and not set in stone at all. They're all rather more complicated than any one house's attributes, especially by the end.

One of these days I'll be able to listen to Zurich straight through without making embarrassing noises and getting all teary. Today is not that day.

FANDOM FUNDRAISING AUCTION FOR NEPAL

(Anonymous) 2015-04-26 08:48 am (UTC)(link)
http://fandomaid.livejournal.com/

There is a fandom auction beginning with the intent to raise funds towards disaster relief in Nepal after the devastating earthquake today. The details are at the livejournal site, but in simple terms, fans offer fanworks in exchange for the highest bid of donation to a charity that helps with disaster relief in the region. The full auction will likely be up tomorrow, but there is already a 'buy-it-now' post up, where the fans offering set the dollar amount and first bidder gets it instead.

If you can't bid or offer, then please spread the word. Nepal has suffered incredible damage today, and legitimate aid agencies will need all the help they can get to get on the ground in Nepal to assist with rescue and recovery efforts.

IT'S CANON.

(Anonymous) 2015-07-01 09:50 am (UTC)(link)
Noticed in the illustrations for the A to Z box set that the little image of Martin gesturing to the lipstick inscription that his hair has (to my eyes) a reddish auburn hue over the black pen lines of the doodle. So thank you John Finnemore for confirming the fanon of Martin Crief being (in some way) ginger.

A very bad pic of the image, the light in here is atrocious, but the colouring over the ben sketch lines, particularly in the right of the image, suggests something reddish to me.

The box set booklet is a joy and well worth the price. It has Gerti's layout and reveals little things about the characters and general series developments through photos of their 'desktops' and notebooks, and there are little hand-drawn illustrations throughout.

Thank you so much for the picture! Definitely auburn/reddish touch.
Counts for me :)

November is coming

(Anonymous) 2015-10-13 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
For writers who don't have the time or inclination for NaNoWriMo's 50k in a month goal, there's mini_wrimo, the DW and LJ comm that encourages smaller daily word count commitments during the month of November. It's great motivation to work on fic you've been fiddling with for months, or to light up your writing fires again. All writers welcome!

ALLAM FANS, HEAD'S UP! ENDEAVOUR's BACK

(Anonymous) 2016-01-03 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Detective Thursday and his Ginger Protégé ENDEAVOUR Series 3 begins today and continues for four episodes! For those lucky enough to have access to ITV, it airs Sundays at 8pm starting today. For those without that access and without the patience for it to show up on local carriers or itunes at some point... well. You're resourceful people. ;-D

Airplane crew rest areas

(Anonymous) 2016-01-21 05:34 am (UTC)(link)
A fascinating glimpse into the hidden crew rest areas on planes that aren't GERTI. Could be story fodder in there if anyone's still writing, since Martin's on a plane that has this sort of thing now...

Looking for a D/M prompt

[identity profile] lockheed-london.livejournal.com 2016-02-06 03:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Hoping someone on here may be able to point me in the right direction...

I'm looking for a particular (unfilled, I think) prompt on the meme that I read some time ago, where Douglas & Martin sleep together for the first time and it doesn't actually go all that well. Does this ring any bells?

I've had a good look through the last two prompt posts, and the Pinboard archive of all prompts and not had any success. If anyone was able to point me in the right direction then I'd be hugely grateful!

Re: Looking for a D/M prompt

(Anonymous) 2016-02-06 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I've seen a few like that, I think, but I'll see what I can find. Do you remember around when you saw it or if there was any particular phrasing in it that might be searchable?

The pinboard is sadly unupdated for a long while now and doesn't have the more recent prompt posts. I'm not sure even who has access to do that anymore.

John Finnemore PSA

(Anonymous) 2017-02-08 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Just a belated note that most of series Six of John Finnemore's Souvenir Programme is available for listening to for free, legally, worldwide on BBC Radio iPlayer for the next 2 to 29 days depending on the episode. One episode has a bit that I like to think of as an AU for Cabin Pressure where a not-so cheery Arthur is a pilot.

If interested, Episodes 2 through 6 can be found at the link below, at least for a while:
