Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Roger Allam Audiobooks

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
Do any of the audiobooks RA has voiced have particularly gripping plots or other features other than Roger Allam's voice that would make them stand above the others as a better one to purchase?

Um...... He did an audio book of Solar by Ian Mcewan. I'm not really a fan of him, but I quite liked the book, Allam's reading of it was really fitting. Considering I got it because of him. But plot wise, it wasn't too bad.

Pimp a prompt?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-18 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Prompts from any part, your own or anyone else's, for which you are particularly eager to see a fill written.

Re: Pimp a prompt?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-19 10:54 am (UTC)(link)
So many.
But pressed to name three of four I'd go with those ones:

Douglas hits his 10th year of sobriety
http://cabinpres-fic.dreamwidth.org/6625.html?thread=12335073#cmt12335073

D/M, giggling, fluff
http://cabinpres-fic.dreamwidth.org/6625.html?thread=12063457#cmt12063457

D/M - breathplay and issues
Martin comes hardest when he's got Douglas' big strong hands wrapped around his throat, choking the breath out of him. Douglas is terrified of doing this for Martin because he's afraid he'll cause permanent damage or that Martin's asking to be abused when that's the last thing Douglas wants to do with him, but he complies with Martin's request each time despite his own misgivings, feeling worse and worse but never bringing it up. One day, Martin finds out how Douglas has been feeling, they have a good long talk and find a way to make it work.
http://cabinpres-fic.dreamwidth.org/6625.html?thread=12043745#cmt12043745

Douglas accidentally physically hurt someone when he was young because he's so big and grew up much more quickly than other kids. Now, he's super-wary, even though all he really wants to do is stretch out on the couch with someone, wrap his arms around their middle, and rest his head on their chest so they will play with his hair.
But he's afraid he's too big and heavy and will hurt them, so he denies himself every time the urge strikes.
What happens when his current partner (Martin?) figures everything out?

Just sayin'.

Grrr-- who knows when we'll get to see the new series over here in the States. I'm ready to (lowers voice, looks around in a shifty way) look for "other ways" to watch it. I'll end up getting the DVD when it's available, which I feel makes up for it. If PBS can't get their act together and even hint at when they're bringing it over, it's their fault. And BBC America is a joke half the time.

I'm very sorry but the two people who had done the updating recently - Tiwtin and I - are indeed not doing it any longer.

My short statement regarding this is here:
http://cabinpres-fic.dreamwidth.org/6262.html?thread=11235446#cmt11235446

And I think Twitin's reasons were similiar.

You could always ask the mods of course.

I'm sorry.

I'm sometimes back here as one can see but I don't see me doing the pinboard again, I'm sorry.

Non-Prompted Fic

[personal profile] pink_dalek 2013-04-24 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm never sure what to do with CP fics that aren't prompt fills. So I'm posting a link to one here.

Zaporizhzhya
Summary: An attempt to solve the cliffhanger. Also, the thought of BC having to pronounce the name of that city amuses me. There is a character death, but I don't think anyone will be too upset.

Non-prompted fic is just fanfic, which is the majority of fiction written in most fandoms. ^^

The CP convention

(Anonymous) 2013-04-28 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not official yet, but the are two conventions being discussed at the moment. One being held in the US and the other in Europe. (Exact locations are unknown.) JF so far has no idea this is being planned since it's all at the baby stage and only fans are pulling this together.

If it does happen, how many of you peeps will I get to see in near future? Most likely the US one will be held on the east coast and that one I will most Definitely make an effort to go to. Road trip!

Re: The CP convention

(Anonymous) 2013-05-07 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
The Euro-con will be held in Milan and the US con will be held in Washington DC. Since I live only a half hour away from DC, I'm definitely going!

Aeroplanes

(Anonymous) 2013-05-06 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Did anyone else notice that in this week's Unbelieveable Truth : http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01s7zpg/The_Unbelievable_Truth_Series_11_Episode_5/

John Finnemore talks about aeroplanes and namedrops the Lockheed McDonnel 3-12 (Gerti's fictitious model name) as having 'both wings on the same side'... which makes it very good at turning right, and not very good at not turning right.

Things you want to write but can't

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 05:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Confession time. I LOVE slave-AUs. Love 'em. Especially the ones that start out all angsty but have happy endings and character growth and stuff. It's a weakness.

But can I actually write them?
HELLS NO.
I have tried so many times, had so many ideas for how it should go, and yet it always just turns direct to sludge on the page. It is endlessly frustrating to me. Fluffy romance or porn or UST I can whip those out without a hitch, but just that one particular trope I fail at so hard it's painful.

So, what tropes do you love reading but totally fail at writing for yourself?

Re: Things you want to write but can't

(Anonymous) 2013-05-12 07:48 pm (UTC)(link)

I need a Roger Allam-type cuddle right now and want to hide somewhere after having a round of, 'Hm, I'm curious, I think I'll Google that.' I just feel so affected after reading what I've read and knowing there are people in the world who think like that - I know, the world is full of different people with different viewpoints and I can't hide forever and there will be people out there I disagree with. It just feels a bit difficult and a bit too much information. It feels somewhat first-hand and exposing of the way some people are.

Curiousity did indeed, it seems, kill the cat.

Apologies for this weird post and I'm so sorry if it's upset anyone, but I felt I just wanted to get this out anon. Cabin Pressure is often a comfort and a safe haven for times like this and John Finnemore has such a calm, kind and sensible way of seeing the world.

The hired help

From Finnemore's last Twitter Q&A painstakingly transribed over here-
http://jal-ier.tumblr.com/post/51133461845/johnfinnemore-this-time-last-week-we-did-any

Who & why was Martin showing how not to twist their ankle in Ottery St. Mary?

The agricultural student from the house he lives in whom he occasionally employs as extra muscle on Icarus Removal jobs.

Well there you go, if you ever wondered how he hauled those wardrobes on his own, now we know.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-03 08:07 am (UTC)(link)
Since the pinboard isn't updating anymore the unfilled prompts on recent parts can't be searched. If there are prompts on any part you are hoping to see a fill for, drop a link here with it's tldr and it might be easier to find.

So... something big happened to me weekend before last.

I was an artists' liason intern at a certain literary festival in Wales and I'd heard that John Finnemore was there. I tentatively asked if I could be his minder as he was performing on the Sunday evening and the manager said yes. :D

I then spent the entire Sunday absolutely nervous as hell. It was rather a big deal for me because John is one of my heroes and I was trying not to think about it too much because of all these fears I had going around my brain at the thought of meeting him: what if I annoyed him, what if it turned out to be a classic 'fans shouldn't meet their idols' moment? (I know, I don't mean to knock John because I know he's a nice guy but it was just the thought of meeting him in the flesh that had me tangled up in knots, as it was something I'd wanted to do for a long time and I was actually being given the chance to do it). The fact that his event wasn't until the evening and I figured I wouldn't be meeting him until at least six, didn't help my nerves; it was rather like exam anxiety.

At around four o'clock that afternoon, I was in the artists' reception Googling the people John was appearing with (as I had never heard of them and didn't know what they looked like) and then I turned around - only to have John himself walk straight up to me.

Cue me trying really, really hard not to come over all Martin-like, to introduce myself professionally and above all else, TO NOT, for the love of all that's good, make a 'How can myself be of assistance to yourself?' joke.

But. But but but.

HE IS THE LOVELIEST, SWEETEST GUY IN THE WORLD. He smiled at me and shook my hand and when I asked if I could bring him anything, asked for printing paper for a script of the Souvenir Programme. I brought him everything he needed (he was on the computer, with Terence Stamp dozing opposite) and I told him quietly how much I loved Cabin Pressure and what a comfort it had been to my Mum and I during my Nan's illness and following her death. And he listened, thanked me and told me how touching that was.

And as the afternoon went on, he introduced me to the rest of his group, made conversation with me and was, at all times, caring, friendly and considerate. I was doing my best not to bother the group too much but he was just so kind and even though I was a little nervous, he was very calming.

I don't want to bore people with the details; I'm sharing this mostly to let people know, again, just how wonderful John is. At the night's end, he gave me an autograph (one for my Mum, one for me, and also one for my brother) and a photo together (I asked for the photo tentatively, as you're not really allowed to ask as an intern, but as it was late and he readily agreed, the staff said it was fine as long as he was okay with it) and then I gave him a hug and told him how much I had enjoyed myself.

I still can't quite believe it had happened - I did see him briefly the next day but had to rush off to an event so couldn't stick around to chat (and was actually a bit hurried in my speech - the poor chap had to ask me to repeat myself when I spoke too fast). But it was the most wonderful thing in the world and he and his entire group really helped to put me at ease. He was so down-to-earth and the show itself - which included some bits from the Souvenir Programme, was incredibly funny - although I missed one point during a particularly great sketch where John was jumping up and down in front of the microphone because I had to get the roses for the performers. *facepalm*

But I'm so proud of myself for doing this and for actually meeting John. He is truly the friendliest chap I could ever wish to have met and I adore him so much for putting me at ease and casually waving all my fears aside with his kindness and his easy-going nature. I can't believe I did it - but I'm so very glad I did. :)

(Oh, and that flapjack in the tent he mentioned on Twitter? I BROUGHT HIM THAT FLAPJACK).

Cool. What a great experience. It's nice to know he's a sweetie.

I'd probably giggle and babble awkwardly like a Loki/Martin mashup.

John Finnemore? Ehehehehe *fall over* hehehe

What are fans of Finnemore called?

Not Cabin Crew, because that would just be Cabin Pressure

Romeo. Romeo + Juliet (Jomeo)

Just listened to Limerick for the 100th time and thought I'd just throw this out there:

Anyone else remember the Phonetic Alphabet advert that Bravo Alpha Alpha used to have?

...Who?

I don't even remember Bravo Alpha Alpha, I think we can safely assume I don't recall their phonetic alphabet ;p

Question about the Index

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
If a person with rather a lot of free time on their hands (but literally no coding experience/knowledge) was interested in updating the Pinboard...

Would that be possible?

Can anyone advise?

Hi!

Hope it's okay if I answer this, since I last updated the pinboard.

I would say you totally could do it, but you might have to ask the mods too, though the pinboard is run seperately anyway and I dare say why should they mind.

However, you don't need any coding experience at all. Time on the other hand you need a lot.

And the will to make decisions as many propmts can't be clearly categorized and then you just have to decide what tags to use or not.
And good memory helps to as the pinboard has a huge amount of tags one should know they exists, but I can always give you advice.

These are, besides the time factor, the only demanding factors in the process of archiving.

Reading the fills helps too as one kinda have to know what to tag them with.

I am sure many people would be very grateful!

Any more questions, feel free to pm me.

I want a Martin. I could even keep him in the lifestyle to which he's accustomed. :)

The Portakabin

(Anonymous) 2013-06-12 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Since it has a leaky roof and is probably cheap and old, would it be safe to say that the walls would be coated in older metal sheeting and that a cellphone wouldn't be able to get a good signal from inside?

Re: The Portakabin

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 07:02 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose it could possibly be the case if you needed it to be so for a fic.

Even directly post WWII pre-fab housing was predominantly made of wood though, as metal was at a shortage. Portakabins themselves (often also referred to as 'mobiles') are generally wooden with a flat-roof because it makes them lighter to transport. It's the joins between the roofing felts that make them prone to leaking, as anyone with a flat-roof garage will tell you.

If you want something old and metal, you might be thinking more of a Nissen Hut. Common on airfields as storage buildings, you could put MJN in a leaky old converted Nissen Hut and have Carolyn insist on calling it a portakabin because it sounds better?

MJN fist sets …sail? off?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
So sorry if this has been asked before! (Or if it's common knowledge) I'd really like to know when MJN air started?

When was the divorce? Has Douglas been there from the start?

Re: MJN fist sets …sail? off?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-13 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
We know Carolyn got the plane in the divorce and we know she called her airline MJN to spite Gordon. We don't know exactly how long ago that was. We know Douglas has been there longer than Martin but I don't think we've ever been given an exact length of time for for that either. Martin had been there less than a year in S1 though, if that's any help?

What kind of Toblerone is the best kind of Toblerone?

Re: What kind of Toblerone is the best kind of Toblerone?

The best Toblerone is in the light blue box. It's the one with honey and almond nougat and salted caramelized almonds.
