Chatter Post II

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

New chat post, same rules. Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

How about a game of quotes?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-28 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
The general idea is, someone starts by posting a one line or one sentence quote from Cabin Pressure, whoever can name the episode and the speaker gets to post another quote for people to guess and so on.

I'll start.

"This is like something I saw on the wildlife channel last night."

Re: How about a game of quotes?

(Anonymous) 2013-02-28 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
Arthur, Ipswich.

The problem is this game is a bit too easy. I feel like Martin in Yverdon - "Any 12 year old knows that!" I think most of us have the scripts of all 25 episodes pretty much committed to memory, sad though that is to contemplate.

Maybe we should make it a bit more complicated... like, on odd numbers we skip to the next episode... buzz!

Anyway:

"That's not very mysterious."

you can't take the street off the fangirl

(Anonymous) 2013-03-05 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I was finally able to watch "Argo" in the theatre.

In between the moments where I watched like a SRS grown-up, my thought-process went something like this:

"Woah, Ben Affleck has really pretty eyes. I never knew when faced with his Jawline of Blandness (TM)." "There's nobody to slash him with." "How about some AU fic where he meets Peter Guillam from TTSS?" "They're flying out with SWISS AIR?!?!" "That Swiss Air captain is one relaxed dude." "Okay, Martin and Douglas smuggling people out of that place sounds like a sexy fic."

Replays?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-06 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Does BBC4 have a repeat schedule, or is it pot luck? I noticed the episodes are accessible by iPlayer again after a repeat, and that's the only way I can listen to them at work, so I'm hoping there is some predictable replay pattern?

Re: Replays?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-07 07:50 am (UTC)(link)
You mean Radio4?
BBC4 is a Tv channel.

And the answer is kind of... ~~eehhhhh... Schedules are usually available up to 2 weeks in advance via the Radio Times website, but if you're asking whether we can predict which series are going to shuffle through on repeat and when, with any sort of regularity, then no. It is incredibly potluck.
But keep an eye on Radio 4extra, it's Radio 4's sister channel and plays mostly repeats from its archive. It's more likely to end up on there.

Person who mentioned 8th Doctor audios

Re: Person who mentioned 8th Doctor audios

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 08:26 am (UTC)(link)
Person who mentioned them in the first place already replied on the original thread?
Start with the Lucie Miller episodes. There's 4 good seasons of that, with an obvious numerical order to them.

http://www.bigfinish.com/ranges/released_reverse/eighth-doctor-adventures

Start with 1.1 and go from there?

There are earlier ones, but I'd suggest hitting up wikipedia for those titles as they were released as individual multi-part adventures and don't have a sequential numbering system. See if you enjoy the easily available ones, then go hunting for the older ones.

travel websites

(Anonymous) 2013-03-08 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I have developed a habit of using travel websites for fanfic reference, and there's one called oneworld where you can select a big string of destinations and I can tell I'll be in there playing for days.

Re: travel websites

That's cool.
And research is a handy tool all writer's need to use if it helps their story.

(EL james that note is more for you than any fan fic writer here, because they know how to write good stories, you just suck. Do your research!)

BPG Awards

(Anonymous) 2013-03-15 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Two of our favorite gentleman appeared at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards. Here are a couple of pics of them together:

They were up against each other, along with Peter Capaldi and Ben Whishaw in what I've decided is the greatest awards shortlist I've ever seen. I was rooting for Capaldi, simply because I'm rooting for Malcolm Tucker to win everything now that the show is over.

But I have no problem with Cumberbatch's win; Parade's End was wonderful and he and Rebecca were both great in it.

Looking for short fic recs

(Anonymous) 2013-03-16 07:25 am (UTC)(link)
I've got only short bits of time I can read in, so I'm looking for fics under 5000 words. Does anyone have any they'd particularly recommend? Gen, slash, het, kink, I'm not fussy.

Recs of older stories would be good as well. I'm somewhat recent to the fandom, so I am sure I have missed a lot of great fanfic by coming in so late.

How long does it take you to write smut?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-21 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so weird, but it takes me DAYS to write smut for a short fic. It's just one scene all about sex and it takes me FOREVER to write it. I am wondering if it's just me in this boat or if someones is gonna join me?

So, tell me how long it takes you to write smut, what are your problem area's and how do you try to fix it? I am mainly looking for suggestions to get my ass in gear on writing for a prompt I promised something for. I've got a good, straight forty minutes in while I was at work. (home care, the man and I sit and watch tv in the afternoons, and so I brought my computer to write at his home). So. yeah. I really need to finish it.

As for my problem area, description. I just don't think I do it well when it comes to smut.

And, does anyone feel weird calling a man's entrance a "rose bud" or whatever? I've seen it done and I just wonder if that's a bit awkward.

Re: How long does it take you to write smut?

(Anonymous) 2013-03-21 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Rosebud is honestly the most ghastly twee term I can possibly imagine for a guy's asshole. *lol* Possibly just short of euphamisms about chocolate starfish.

Takes me forever to write smut too, so don't worry about that. It's usually an issue of inclination for me though. Writing it's a lot more hard work than just reading it, and I generally write for kicks about the things that turn me on so if I'm tired or feeling lazy it just doesn't happen.
Or if I'm not really in the mood then trying to write porn is like beating your head against a wall. That's usually my defining criteria. If it's not getting me hot and bothered then it rather defies the point and means self-evidently there's something wrong with the scene.

Descriptive terms for things, you have to go with your gut and there's no set or definied scheme there. It depends on the tone of the story. If it's soft and sweet and romantic then gentler and more euphamistic terms are more appropriate than the courser, graphic descriptors you'd use for harder porn.
You probably shouldn't have a dub-con BDSM scene with whips and chains and a scary Dom ordering his cowed sub to lick his 'rosebud', much like you probably shouldn't have a sweetly gentle romantic scene where one lover carefully eases his fingers into his nervous sweetheart's tight slutty hole. It's all fitness for purpose, really.

Work out what terms you prefer to read, then see if they fit your story.

Synonyms for arses though are many and varied. From the classic ass hole (or arse hole), entrance, hole, rim or pucker, to the floral and more metaphorical, like softly yeilding warmth, fluttering channel or rippling heat.

Find the tone for your story and then work out the descriptors to fit.

Okay, here is the first word, now go!

Guilty pleasure tropes

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
What are your favorite guilty-pleasure tropes? You know, the ones you will always read fic for even if it's not very good? (These can also double as bulletproof kinks if you like.)

Re: Guilty pleasure tropes

(Anonymous) 2013-03-29 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Romance tropes?
A failure of communication that leads to hearbroken unrequited pining that eventually resolves with a happy ending.
Which is, to be fair, essentially the plot of almost every grocery store romance novel ever written but, shhh, we shan't mention that.

Bulletproof kinks, sub!Martin in whatever variation he comes in. He'd be so squirmy and tactile and so desperately eager to please... [bites lip] Unf.

"Your story would be better if"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 05:53 am (UTC)(link)
How do you react when you get reviews that say a story you wrote would be better if it was a different story? Like if you got a review that said they would have liked the story more if it was set somewhere else in canon timeline or setting, or if it was about a different pairing, or had more or less porn, or had an entirely different plot, or was going to include the events leading up to or following it?

I just got a string of reviews from the same person (different fandom) saying things like this, all on fic that has been posted for years and has otherwise gotten lots of very positive reviews. I'm feeling very annoyed by this person's comments.

Re: "Your story would be better if"

(Anonymous) 2013-04-01 10:46 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, ignore them?
There's two types of 'Your story would be better if...'
The legitimate kind and the stupid kind.

Your story would be better if... [you fixed the punctuation/clarified the character motivation/did some research/stopped making them so OOC/hadn't fallen into that cliche pit] Those are all potentially legitimate criticisms which might be worth bearing in mind for the future.

However-
Your story would be better if... [it was set in space/it was about Han Solo rather than Dean Winchester/you got Spock-Bones together rather than Spock-Kirk/it took place when they were kids/you wrote an uneccessary sequel where stuff I want happens/you re-wrote it to fit MY ideas because I'm too lazy to write my own story] Then those criticisms are stupid and you can ignore them.

Mostly by remembering "This is an old story I finished a long time ago. What do you expect me to do about it NOW?" The answer to which is "Nothing" because there's nothing being said that could be useful to remember for the future.
That's how I generally deal with negative feedback. This story is finished and I'm not changing it, but is there anything being said that's worth bearing in mind for the next story I write?
If the answer's no then they can blithely be ignored.

Pettiest grouse in the world

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
It's taut. The word you're looking for is taut. It does not have an n in it.

Taut- strained, stetched or pulled tight
Taunt- to tease, mock or torment

His arms were pulled taut, straining against the merciless hold of Douglas's fuzzy handcuffs.
"Shall I taunt you with this cheese sandwich, Captain?" his tormentor crowed, wafting the delicious snack beneath Martin's nose. "Mmmm, Camembert."

Re: Pettiest grouse in the world

(Anonymous) 2013-04-05 07:53 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh. All. The. Time.

It's also not "taught" which I've seen often, or "tot" which I saw once and laughed too hard to finish reading the story at the image of the character having the abdominal musculature of a toddler.

I've got some satisfaction in a PITA job well done. Will a cup or two of that tide you over until you can get some happy?

Suddenly reminded of that Doctor Who ep where Ten and Martha go to New New York and there are people selling little drug patches of Happy, Forget, etc.

I'm pretty psyched about this. But knowing PBS, we won't be getting Endeavour until the fall/next year, won't we?

Looks like I'll have to turn on my tunnel bear thing and watch it this weekend.

Re: New series of Endeavour

[personal profile] pink_dalek 2013-04-12 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
I just beat my head against the brick wall of pbs.org's schedule and got nowhere. It's especially frustrating b/c everything on Masterpiece is still "Downton Abbey," and I guess I'm the only person in the US who didn't swoon over DA. I tried "Mr. Selfridge," saw more soap opera in Edwardian gowns and thought, oh brother, DA goes shopping.

Nice murder, that'll cheer me right up. Bring on Mystery, PBS! I really miss that not being its own show any longer.

'Vegetarian'?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 07:40 am (UTC)(link)
New to the fandom, and totally confused on something in one of the episodes even after a bit of a google hunt...

So, Herc says (in quite a few instances) he is a vegetarian. But, at least here in the States, a vegetarian can still eat dairy. So why is Herc unable to eat from the cheese tray? Is there, like, meat in some of these fancier cheeses? Or do Brits call vegetarians what us 'murricans call 'vegans', those who abstain from all animal products, including dairy (milk, eggs, cheese, etc)? Or is this some joke I'm just not getting?

Sorrysorrysorry if this has been asked before.

Re: 'Vegetarian'?

(Anonymous) 2013-04-13 11:50 am (UTC)(link)
I think someone else explained it better elsewhere, but basically there's some sort of meat product used in making a lot of cheeses and it's probably just easier for him to avoid cheese altogether than to try and remember which ones he can't have.
