Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

Good evening ladies and gentlemen (and good day to you too, inhabitants of the other side of the world). As always - this isn't a captain speaking but I come bearing news nonetheless.

It has been brought to my attention today(/night) by our good friend OxfortTweed, that a Chatter Post might work quite well for our fandom.

I'm inclined to agree with him.

As such, here you have a brand-spanking-new post to chatter, Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

MOD POST

We have been alerted to a small problem on the meme, and it's something that needs to be addressed quickly. This is an anon fic meme. We recently moved websites so people with visual disabilities could play along with minimal hassle. There are so many reasons why a fill might go slow or be abandoned that I'm not going to even start to list them all.

So I'll just say this here: fills will go slow or be abandoned completely. It's a part of life on fic memes. If you would like to continue what appears to be an abandoned fill, you MUST ask the original author. You can do this via note, or if they're anon, right there in the thread. If they say no, or do not respond to your request, then common courtesy and basic etiquette would be to do your own fill. Hijacking fills is beyond cool.

I realise we all get excited about things, but if you really want to fill that prompt, fill it. Don't start up where another filler left off, because they may not be done with it. Many people take a hiatus from fandom and come back later. Why they do this is nobody's business but their own.

I can see where you're coming from and it's good to have it laid out as a definite rule. Though if it's related to the fic I think it's related to, I also understand the second author's desire to see a conclusion to a great fic that really definitely did look abandoned after repated queries about its status went completely unanswered.
It's always a great shame when brilliantly written fills go forever unfinished, and it's why I never post WIPs because I don't like doing it to people myself. It's a shame there's no way to actually tell a genuinely abandoned uncared-about-fill from one that's just on hiatus, or even some sort of method by which partial fills can be legitimately put up for adoption if an author knows they're not going to finish it.

But there is a way to tell. You can ask. I'd be a lot more likely to hand a fill over to someone who asked, but if someone just came in and took it, even if I had run out of steam on it, I'd be really upset.

Absolutely appreciated, thank you so much. The idea of someone taking over someone else's story and calling it their own without permission, just because it wasn't updating fast enough for them, makes me nauseous.

There is a different between calling a story one's own, and writing a sequel declared as such.

No one in the thread in cause was calling the original story their own, so all the righteous indignation is for nothing.

I really think this is a mistake. Some writers just drop their fills and leave their readers hanging forever. It would have been nice if, after a certain time, other interested writers could finish the fills.

No, it really wouldn't. The ending you'd get would not be the ending intended and therefore pointless.

Not to mention, downright rude for the other writer to just jump in and take over without permission.

If the mods want to start an orphan's post, that's fine by me. But the writers have to offer up the fic for adoption first.

Reposting original comment for those who want to continue the discussion:

I think this mod decision is highly hypocritical. We write *fan fiction*. We actually start up where John Finnemore leaves off, even though he's not done with it. (May he never be!)

As long as it is *acknowledged* as being by a different author, it is no different at all. It is not affecting the existence of the abandoned fill any more than it is affecting the existence of Cabin Pressure itself. If the author *ever* continues it, it will still be their fill. It's just fan fiction of fan fiction.

And some of the debate points:

- etiquette within fandom is different from etiquette towards non-fandom authors - it is, but this is debatable; in my opinion it's a rather skewed double standard;

- how would *you* feel? - Well, it depends; but my feelings about my own stories shouldn't affect the right of others to share their ideas. I might feel relieved that someone else wrote the end so I don't have to. If I *didn't* like their sequel, I might feel some renewed motivation to finish my story. I *would* think it flattering that my story touched people enough to want to finish it. If I *did* like their ending, and it was better than mine, I would feel very jealous indeed, but I don't think they should be shut off just because they're better than me.

Well, that's you. You're clearly an exception to the rule. It's nice that you're so open to share your work like that. But many of us aren't like you and I'm sorry, majority rules. If you're doing something that makes a lot of us upset if it happened to them, then it would be safe to assume that the original author would be as well. If not, then they're a much more forgiving author than I am.

You might technically be right (it's pointless to debate the semantics of authorship with you since that's not really the point), but you're being disrespectful to other writers if you do things without their permission. If you think being right is more important than being respectful then thank goodness you're anon.

Do you know what fanfiction of a fanfiction is? It's called a remix, not a tacked-on unauthorized ending.

I would be *beyond* flattered if someone wrote fanfiction for my fanfiction. I think it would be the greatest compliment someone could pay me. But that's me. Personally, when I write fanfic, I only do it for the stories I love the most. And I never ask for permission. If an original author had a problem with it... I still wouldn't stop writing fanfic.

My first fandom, long, long ago, was Vampire Chronicles and we all just went underground when Anne Rice started attacking websites and tried to stop us from writing our weirdo stories and thoughts inspired about her work. That always struck me as the strangest sort of thing you could do to your biggest fans. She didn't even want us thinking about her characters that way. How can you try to control someone's thoughts like that?

So... I agree with you completely. I've actually written fanfic of someone's fanfic and emailed it to the writer (one of my favorites!), but she never responded. :(

(Anonymous)

My fic was jacked once. Not in this fandom, but in another. Due to circumstances beyond my control, I was unable to get to a computer for nearly six months. And when I did, I had no focus for fanfiction because I was too busy focusing on life.

So finally when I got some time and a new computer, I decided to check on my little fic for reviews and such and explain to my readers wtf happened.

I found my fic jacked. The story went completely different, the characters had conversations I would have never intended, there was a very graphic rape scene, and it totally ruined everything the world I had set up. I was horrified. Insulted, and a little sick from that rape scene.

Since this has stirred up a considerable amount of controversy, why don't we settle on a compromise and have an orphan post like some of the other memes I've seen out there?

I personally wouldn't mind if anybody got impatient and started writing fic for my WIPs and I have an embarrassing amount I haven't owned up to yet... I would probably avoid reading them until I had settled on an ending for my own or had completely given up on it though.

What would be awesome would be if someone wrote a fic for a fic for a fic for a fic for a fic... Just endless fic, everywhere. *dreamy eyes*

Eep, didn't know this was going on, but certainly glad it is a rule now.

I am curious as to the people equating fic hijaking with what all fic does with canon works. The thing is, fanfics are the only real place for a fan to express a desired continuation of the canon story. Hijaking a fic would not be analogous to all fic writing.

It would be analogous to gathering a handful of actors, recording an episode of a radio comedy, calling it "Cabin Pressure", declaring it the first episode of the fourth season, broadcasting it on the BBC, and wondering why John Finnemore was getting perturbed.

I agree that it's rude to take up someone's stories. If it's not your fill, leave it be.

But I think it's fair that if you're inspired by a fill, then you could write a second fill and say "inspired by" or some such. Writing a direct continuation isn't good, but writing a second fill that is more like "fanfic of a fanfic" seems fair to me. The OP can pick up their part when they have the chance.
