Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

Good evening ladies and gentlemen (and good day to you too, inhabitants of the other side of the world). As always - this isn't a captain speaking but I come bearing news nonetheless.

It has been brought to my attention today(/night) by our good friend OxfortTweed, that a Chatter Post might work quite well for our fandom.

I'm inclined to agree with him.

As such, here you have a brand-spanking-new post to chatter, Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Martin's hair colour?

(Anonymous)
2011-05-01 09:28 am UTC (link)
I keep reading in fics and comments that Martin is red-haired but in the promo pics his hair looks light brown to me. Is it mentioned on the show what colour his hair is?

He's sort of gingery in the promo pics. I think people fancy him that way because Cumberbatch is secretly ginger.

A good one I've heard is that Martin is also sort of secretly ginger, but he dyes it because he desperately wants for people to take him seriously.

It looks red in the promo photos to me but red-brown rather than a striking carrot-ginger. In real life Cumberbatch is a Day Walker, so that's probably why people write Martin as a ginger.

I had to actually look that up. I had never heard that term before, and it confused the hell out of me.

It's a neologism, but a useful one. BC's actually a prime example with his ginger hair but lack of freckles and medium complexion (brown hair looks natural on him).

So have I! It sounded slightly supernatural, like skin walker, White Walker...

If BC were like a White Walker that would be most distressing, indeed.

A skinwalker (aka shapeshifter) though, that would be interesting... *g*

And Day Walker can also refer to a sort of vampire that can walk in sunlight, apparently. (Someone close my Wiki tabs, please... There's a point where the nuggets of knowledge solidify into a trivia brick.)

Well, in fairness, so would a White Walker. He can set fangirls' panties aflame and raise corpses from the dead. That's talent.

Shall I link you to TV Tropes to get you away from the magnetic pull of wiki-linking trivia pages?

Yeah, OK, the definition of interesting is rather broad...

That would be very kind of you, but I could do a little longer without this kindness. *g*

"Interesting" isn't a synonym for good, really, just... something that draws interest. It's what you say when someone shows you a new painting you find hideous but you have to say something. It's 'interesting.' (But nota bene: if I describe a fic as 'interesting' I do mean it in the positive sense!)

(And thank goodness, because I don't need to be dragged back into TV Tropes, either...)

He does have freckles though, most noticeably in the Marie Claire shoot he did. I guess they're not very noticeable or he wears enough makeup to cover them up most of the time? Either that or I'm working off the wrong googled definition of Day Walker. XD

He does have freckles but they rather come and go. I assume like a lot of people they're somewhat seasonal and get more prominent the more time you spend in the sun. (Also, yes... TV and photoshoot makeup cover pretty much everything.)

In a clear, unairbrushed photo like this (http://www.contactmusic.com/pics/l/princes_trust_3_180308/benedict_cumberbatch_5105304.jpg) (or, for lulz, this (http://www.aceshowbiz.com/images/wennpic/tamara_drewe_25_wenn2989071.jpg)) he has a couple scattered little spots, but I wouldn't call him freckled. You have to have, like, a critical mass to be "freckled", not so few you can count them on one hand. :p (I have four, and nobody has ever described me as "freckled".) He could have more that he covers all the time with makeup, but I think that is his natural coloring.

/giving this too much thought.

A daunting, arduous, and thoroughly unpleasant task, to be sure, but I thought I'd take one for the team.

(Actually, this sort of thing just makes me wonder why, when Cumberbatch really is a bizarrely, intensely attractive man for how objectively odd-looking he is, I still inexplicably lust after Mark Gatiss?)

There is nothing inexplicable about it! Mark Gatiss is incredibly clever, geeky and talented. He met his boyfriend while chatting about grammar! I will never get over how sweet that is. ♥ He's probably one of the few celebrities whose twitters I can actually stand to read, and that says quite a lot.

All true, and that is an adorable how-we-met story. I think he's married now. (I find him physically attractive, too. Is that weird? I suppose my taste in men has never run toward the classically handsome.) His is also one of the only celebrity twitter feeds I enjoy reading (unless public radio personalities count. ...which they don't.)

OK, I could have sworn it was mentioned SOMEWHERE in the series that Martin's both short and ginger- or at least that Douglas teases him about his height and a lack thereof and I'm just hallucinating the ginger part.

Oh the horrors, I may have to re-listen to them again.

As a ginger myself I feel the need to throw myself into this discussion. I look at Cumberbatch and think "hey, we have the same coloring", so I'll explain how it works for me (and of course how I imagine it works for him too).

I have freckles all the time, but I can see them because I know they are there. Other people have to get pretty close to me in the winter to see them at all. In the summer they multiply like rabbits though. And my hair used to be very red, although not red like, say, Ron Weasley, but still red. As I'm getting older my hair gets progressively less red, and I'm counting on it being more brownish when I'm thirty, and going grey when I'm getting close to forty. So I think it could be the same, that his hair is just loosing its redness. Also, he dyes it for Sherlock, and dying it back to his natural color would be impossible (I know this through experience, not hairdresser I've ever been to has been able to dye it red like my hair looks). Of course, hair also gets bleached in the sun, which is generally noticeable in redheads, so that will account for some of the color variations.

...hmmm, that was a lot of useless info :p

I'm the same way. Ginger and freckled, but in that pale sort of way that people may mistake me for having brown-ish hair.

Although, I've found that with a bit of blonde hair dye, I can reach Ron Weasley levels of orange, which in turn makes me seem much less like a vampire. Somehow, the neon orange hair does actually help me look less ill and more like a human being, so I tend to go super-ultra ginger.

Of course, my freckles seem to have somehow worked this out, as they've begun multiplying recently. I've now got them in places where I didn't before, which is annoying. Especially since some of them have started to invade my tattoos. D:

I had blond highlights once, that looked pretty good. Then another time I tried to bleach my hair at home, which made it not so much blond as yellow. Or as my mother said, piss colored...

Tattoo-invading freckles sounds horrible :( Fortunately my only tattoo is on my ankle, and I tend not to get a lot of freckles on my legs. Though, the one I have planned on my upper arm will probably be freckly. Well, I'll have to live with it, I guess :p

I've got one on my chest which is now ruined, and one on my arm that's getting that way. I'm annoyed, because the invading freckles are huge and dark and visible even through the dark blue and green ink. D:

I'm 99.9% sure it has to do with 'Batch's natural hair color...though personally I just love the idea of Martin as an adorable little fumbling ginger.
