Cabin Pressure Chatter Post One

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE and ADDENDUM

(updated 5 July)

Good evening ladies and gentlemen (and good day to you too, inhabitants of the other side of the world). As always - this isn't a captain speaking but I come bearing news nonetheless.

It has been brought to my attention today(/night) by our good friend OxfordTweed, that a Chatter Post might work quite well for our fandom.

I'm inclined to agree with him.

As such, here you have a brand-spanking-new post to chatter, Brit-pick, ask questions, debate, gossip, gush and generally indulge in any fannish activity that does not fall under the category of posting or filling prompts. I hope you all enjoy it

The usual guidelines apply, but mostly:

-  Please be respectful to one another.

-  Don't bash other (non)anon's comments/questions/ideas/etc.

-  Have fun

Now go forth, chat amongst yourselves and enjoy. I am of course on stand, so if any problems arise, feel free to drop me a line.

And if you stumble across any plot bunnies here, please just drop them off home at the Prompt-Post, the rest of the herd will be overjoyed to meet them.

Or as they say in Limerick

It's been brought to my attention we are needing
A place for discussion, not reading
I hope this post will do
I'll leave the rest to you
And Beware of the plot bunnies breeding

Sorry if the poem is rubbish - I literally haven't written one since grade five.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

So, brand new chatter post (with an AWESOME banner, by the way. Love that!), I've got a vaguely on-topic question for you.

What are some of your more interesting travel stories? Or substitute 'interesting' for 'annoying' or 'terrifying' or any other adjective you think fits.

I cannot go to Los Angeles without getting lost. I got lost on two road trips, on a trip to go be film extras (which was organised by my partner's employers, who had hired a charter bus), on a city bus, and whilst travelling Greyhound.

I have concluded that it is impossible to go to Los Angeles without getting lost.

Not sure if this is the sort of thing you were talkin about, buuuut I had a really crap family holiday a few years ago.

My mother, 2 brothers and I went down to Canberra for two days and then Sydney for four.

Canberra was incredibly dull, or at least the parts we looked at.

We caught a cab from the Science center back to the hotel to pick up our bags before heading for the airport.
The taxi driver asked what we thought of the city.

Let it be said now that both my brothers lack anything resembling tact or foresight.

As such, the eldest idiot announces in great detail, how absolutely boring it is, naturally failing to notice that said cab-driver had numerous Canberra related memorabilia in and on his car.

This of course leads to a lengthy (and towards the end, rather aggressive) lecture from the aforementioned cab driver on:
- 'you've not been to the right places'
- 'Did you know Canberra is the only place in Australia/the southern hemisphere/the world, that has...'
- 'You can't even begin to judge it in two days. Why would you come here for only two days?!'
- '(insert any other Australian city here) has nothing on Canberra. I went there for the annual meeting of the Australian Taxi Driver's Association (there is such a thing) and it just doesn't compare'
- 'What Universities do Sydney/Brisbane/Melbourne/etc have. Crap! Canberra has..."

We finally arrive at the hotel. Everyone is glad to be shot of him - ...at least everyone that is, but the brother who started the rant, who promptly - on the cusp of freedom - suggests, "Can you drive us to the airport? We're going there next" Leading to another 20-30 minutes of continuous ranting.

The rest of the trip was rubbish as well but that in particular was the worst part

[personal profile] enigel 2011-04-09 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
...and that Douglas has definitely worked there.
On a flight with British Airways from Belfast to London, the pilot made this cabin address: "Ladies and gentlemen, this is my first flight," and after a long pause ended the phrase with "out of Belfast today". As the people in the cabin released their breaths, he went on: "The passengers on the left side can see below us the lights of a big city. We think it might be Liverpool, but we have yet to check our maps." The entire flight went on like this - the funniest flight I've ever been on!

(From this marvelous book of flight anecdotes: http://www.amazon.de/Sorry-wir-haben-Landebahn-verfehlt/dp/3548373267 )

(Note: this is a translation from German by yours truly, of a text that was originally in English, so beware the human Babelfish effect! Original German text provided upon request. ;) )

And a story that seems to come from aboard Gertie herself:
Charter flight from Vienna to Alaska: After the ascent flight we found out that the lights in the toilet didn't work. After I had called the somewhat older stewardess, a small, also older man in blue overalls appeared to assess the damage. Then water began dripping into the cabin from several places in the ceiling. The technician was back, this time with a ladder. Only the air conditioning, no worries! Eventually aisle lights, power and entertainment system failed too. We began to worry and announced this to the stewardess. The charming answer was "Why do you worry? The engines are still running!"

That's Carolyn, all right. :D

Oh, my goodness. Yeah, those are clearly straight from the flight logs. XD

There's a bus driver in town here in Vegas who will do stuff like that. He likes to freak out the tourists by saying that the buses run on Casino hours; they stop at midnight, and start at 12:01.

People like my mum who tend to miss subtle jokes like that get crazy worked up when they're going somewhere at 11:30pm that's miles away from their hotel. XD

It seems that about 3 out of 4 times when I go to use the toilet in an airplane, from out of the blue comes... turbulence. (Not related to my activities in the toilet, thank you very much.)

This is especially fun as I am female and choose not to actually sit on the toilet seat. Balancing acts ensue.

Only 1 out of 2 times for me, but that's probably because 3 out of 4 times turbulence starts just when I've obtained the tomato juice / hot coffee / other colourful and/or hot beverage of choice. How does it know?

Brisbanite here reporting for duty :)

And I'll admit, I first came aware of Cabin Pressure through a Sherlock Xover and its being mentioned quite a lot in prompts over on the Sherlock meme.

Then I looked it up and noticed Roger Allam was a part of it also, as well as Stephanie Cole (I'm quite the fan of Doc Martin as well) - so really I couldn't not look into it.

Though and be hold I fell in love with it (and John Finnemore, who has now joined the rest of the cast as my favored few and developed an equal level of pulling power over this anon) and here I am :)

[identity profile] afullmargin.livejournal.com 2011-04-12 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, well - I've established my impression of Arthur is totally Alan Davies. Martin is a toughie, I actually sort of have a hard time seeing him as Benedict and tend more towards a short version of Jack Davenport. Carolyn and Douglas, however - they're perfectly suited in my head.

Great question!

I'm really sad that Cumberbatch is only going to be in 4 of the 6 episodes for season 3 :( I understand why, but I'm still (on the inside... and, I suppose, here) being one of those annoying fans wailing about how "it won't be the saaaame!" because so much of what I love about this series is the way the actors work as unit.

...I'll try to give the new kid a fair shake, though. I'm sure he's a delightful Martin.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-13 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I would have been okay with stunt!Cumberbatch for 2 episodes, or this being the show's last season, but the two combined do make me a sad panda. If it's the last season, I want it to be perfect, with the original cast, dammit!

It's a pretty small fandom so I'd be surprised if most people here weren't also over there in an non-anon-ing context.

I've grown to very strongly associate Roger Allam's voice (and especially the style of delivery he uses in Cabin Pressure) with Douglas. I was watching Game of Thrones this evening and hadn't heard that Allam had a role in it, and a role which he performs in a somewhat Douglas-like manner, which lent a sort of... unintentional humor to the whole affair.

...I also cannot help but picture Douglas with this facial hair styling now:

Hey guys.

I'm afraid when it comes to accents I am absolutely hopeless. I mean embarrassingly so. So I'm going to need your help on this.

I was just wondering where you guys think the crew were raised.
I know Martin is from Wandsworth (thank you Mr. Burling) but what about the others?

I just really don't want to make some horrible mistake like saying Douglas grew up in Somerset or Manchester or something completely wrong out of sheer naivety.

So anyway, any and all help would be greatly appreciated :) Thanks guys

(Anonymous) 2011-04-26 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Carolyn's accent gets broader when arguing with her sister in Helsinki. I want to say she goes a bit Midland/Yorkshire boarder there, but the rest of the time the cast as a whole are very much on the end of the classic recieved pronuncation accent. It's very middle-class generic rather than strictly geographical. It's what used to be considered a University Accent and isn't especially indicative of anywhere because in a lot of ways it's the most global, un-acented form of the British accent you can get. It's not really tied to any particular region and you can find people who sound a lot like that peppered all over the place.

If I had to pin it somewhere I would say you're more likely find it edging south-east, and pitching any of them in the general London area won't steer you far wrong; the more northern and western you go the stronger the accents get on the whole, but find any town with a notable university or a pocket of affluent middle-class social climbing, and you'll find a homogenised version of that accent in there somewhere.
I'd be hard pushed to place either Douglas or Arthur further north than Norwich though I could somehow imagine Douglas in Cheltenham for some reason. How very socially aspirational...

"a failed criminal"?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-28 01:53 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, maybe it's my non-nativeness, maybe I'm just stupid and I need the joke explained.

In "Edinburgh", Martin says that Mr B called Douglas "a failed criminal". But what the "horrible old boy" said was something about Douglas being ornamental. (I didn't understand that part, so I'm only relying on the transcript.)

Of course, Martin and the audience know that Douglas lost his job because of smuggling, but I'm not seeing how being "an ornament" refers directly to that.

Re: "a failed criminal"?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-28 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
final return to the Captain’s seat, of which you have been such an ornament for so long.

I assume that's the line you mean? Being an ornament in or on something means he decorates it, or resides in it. Mr B is essentially saying 'Finally back in the Captain's chair where you've always previously been,' but as ornaments are essentially useless and non-functional it's a backhanded compliment as it has connotations of 'Finally back in the captain's seat looking good but doing absolutely nothing.'

Martin's later comment of "He called you a failed criminal" I think is either because Mr B obviously knows why Douglas is a co-pilot and will quite happily bring up Douglas's position regardless of tact... OR it's referring to some futher conversation between the pick-up and the return to the plane that we don't get to hear. I actually think it's the latter.
Either way it's not really related to the 'Ornamental' comment, that's a whole other joke.

He's sort of gingery in the promo pics. I think people fancy him that way because Cumberbatch is secretly ginger.

A good one I've heard is that Martin is also sort of secretly ginger, but he dyes it because he desperately wants for people to take him seriously.

Post Code/Phonetic Alphabet

[identity profile] elvendork-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-02 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I was booking my passport application interview and had to tell the man on the phone my post code so he could find the nearest centre to me - it starts "SN", and when I told him, he said "is that Sierra-Mike or Sierra-November"? Which I couldn't help laughing at. Silently, of course - I just about managed to stop myself. Made me think of Arthur. :P

I get really irrationally upset when I'm trying to do stuff on the phone, which I hate doing anyway, and the operator on the other end doesn't know the phonetic alphabet. My last name is really ridiculous, so I any more just automatically spell it out, "Juliet-Uniform-November-Kilo-Mike-Alpha-November."

And then I have people asking me if I can spell that. *facepalm*

Bored, bored, bored etc.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-04 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea how the recording (and writing) of 'Limerick' sits, timeline-wise, compared to the filming of 'Sherlock', but wasn't anyone else amused by the "Booored!" theme running through both, considering the common actor? :D Coincidence or wink? ;)

Re: Bored, bored, bored etc.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Coincidence. Series 2 premiered several days before Sherlock, and the episodes are written and recorded entirely in advance. He would have finished filming on Sherlock, but Finnemore wouldn't have seen it and been able to write in a reference.

According to some taping write ups, though, there is a winking nod to the role in the new series.

Delicious Prompt Index!

[personal profile] oxfordtweed 2011-05-04 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
So, those on the Sherlock meme may be aware that I'm putting together a prompt index over there.

And then I realised that even though we're small, something like that might do us a bit of good over here.

It's right here.

I'll probably take about a week or so to get it all caught up, but there's the first page done, at least. The idea is to be able to search for stuff you may want to fill based on any number of small factors that apply to the prompt. It doesn't say anything about fills, since we've already got a thing for that. This is more for making it easier to find specific prompts for filling, rather than finding stuff for reading.

I'm going to un-anon before I post this one because it seems vaguely pointless not to.

Hi!
I was wondering if anyone would be able to do a quick beta of the promised-a-while-ago fill for the skittish!virgin!Martin prompt?
It got away from me a bit considering it was meant to be a quick fill originally, and I'd appreciate someone taking a little skim through for typos, general authorial stupidity, redundant redundencies and repeated repetition. Because after a while I kind of stop noticing they're there.

It's about 11,000 words, Douglas/Martin, and generally fluffy-porny.

If anyone wants to give it a go I'd be much obliged.

Just wondering if you guys see it too...or if I have finally lost my mind.
Do these two remind you in anyway of Arthur and Martin?

I'm not sure if you can spoil Rosencrantz and Guilderstern Are Dead if you posses even the vaguest memory of Hamlet, but for those of you who like to watch a movie start to finish at once - this is towards the end but it's all on youtube (and brilliant in my Nerdy opinion :D)

Oh my goodness. I can't unthink that now. Delightful.

Substitute boats for planes and you've got it.

"I'm only good in support." AWH

Does that make Douglas Hamlet?

Idiom question

[identity profile] foxtoast.livejournal.com 2011-05-17 03:55 am (UTC)(link)
Is 'tomayto, tomahto' (or its sister 'potayto, potahto') in common use in the UK? I know it's from a Gershwin song and google isn't giving me much on whether this has jumped the pond. If it makes any difference, I'd be giving it to Douglas.

The only other option I can come up with is 'six dozen of one, half dozen of the other', which could work but isn't quite as punchy and concise.

Beta

Does someone want to do a quick and dirty beta for a fill for the 'aliens made them do it'-prompt? And by aliens I mean strange substance Douglas tried to smuggle. I mean, gift someone with.
