Please see the most recent MOD NOTE

(updated 6 June)

Welcome everybody. How you got here I have no idea but thank you for coming and welcome again, nonetheless . As you may have gathered this is a Fic Prompting Meme dedicated solely to the hilarious and oh-so-addictive BBC Radio 4 sitcom - Cabin Pressure. I'm aiming for this to be pretty anything goes - but in order for everything to run smoothly, there are a few guidelines. Don't worry - they're not too restrictive.

FILLING GUIDELINES

As you probably all know - our meme now has it's very own database created and maintained by the great Enigel. It both catalogues each and every prompt that we post and provides links to fills. You can find it here: Google Spreadsheet

We also have a Pinboard archive which has been put in place by the lovely [personal profile] oxfordtweed in the place of our late Delicious Archive. This Archive contains a list of all the prompts this meme has to offer - you can find it here: Pinboard Archive

This is a great step forward in making our meme just a little more organised (but not too organised of course. This is Cabin Pressure) which is always a good thing.

So in order to make things easier to archive - Please nest your fills.

This can be done by either posting each part as a reply to that part's immediate predecessor, OR by replying each time to Part I OR - well you get the idea :D

It makes it simpler for Enigel and myself to link fills in a clean and clear manner. Following these guildelines will be very much appreciated guys :D

REPROMPTING

Reprompting is allowed but please include the URL of the original prompt when you do so. It will make it infinitely more easy to Archive which would make both Enigel and I very happy :)

As for everything else

  1. Be respectful to one another. Disagreements are fine, but not everything disagreeable is trolling. If you suspect someone of trolling, just ignore it. If you cannot respond to a comment without attacking or trolling someone else, keep it to yourself.

  2. No bashing prompts. It might not be your cup of tea - but obviously someone wants it enough to go to the effort of requesting it. So just scroll past it.

  3. Prompt away as much as you like guys - seriously, go wild - but please try to fill as well.

  4. NEW - If your fill includes a major element that veers from the original prompt (crossovers, established universes, kinks, et cetera), please take a few moments to check with the OP that such additions are welcome. This has caused problems in the past and it only takes a few moments of your time.
  5. Please no RPF. I'm not trying to oppress you RPF writers and enthusiasts, I would just really like to avoid any legal problems.

  6. When you post a fill (or post a new part of a WIP) please go over to the Filled Prompts Post (if it is complete) or the WIP Post (if there are still more parts to come) and, following each post's guideline's, post a link to this fill or new part.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

+ Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

Martin Has Asperger's Syndrome

(Anonymous)
2012-02-17 11:49 pm UTC (link)
When he was younger, Martin was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome. He finds it hard to form social relationships with other kids, collects and researches aeroplanes and flying with limited interest in other hobbies, and gets anxious if he doesn't have rules he can stick to so he knows what to do.

This transfers into his adult life. He never tells any of his MJN colleagues. Somehow (idk, maybe it's brought up in conversation, or maybe there's an asperger's child on board who gets upset with the change to his routines by flying, and Martin calms him down) the others find out.

Anything along these lines, just as AS!Martin is a personal headcanon, and as an aspie myself, would love to see something like this on the meme. :D

I would never be able to write this, but it could be absolutely fantastic. Some of the children I teach are on the spectrum, and I can definitely see some elements of Asperger's in Martin.

THISSSSSSS. I think it's most apparent in Kuala Lumpur, when he struggles to understand the social life of the bar and its inhabitants.
Seconded/thirded.

Possibly RTYI?

Hello! I hope someone fills this properly (thinking of doing it myself, actually, but always hesitant to try and portray a character with a condition I don't have myself because it annoys me when people get mine wrong), but there's a small bit about Martin having Asperger's in this fill (for a prompt about Douglas and/or Martin standing up to someone on Arthur's behalf):

thinking of doing it myself, actually, but always hesitant to try and portray a character with a condition I don't have myself...

My advise in that situation is "less is more". Allude to, suggest, but don't outright name or describe. Readers in the know will fill te gaps themselves.

Gonna have a stab at this, because I had an idea that REFUSES to leave, despite me telling it to because everything that I know about aspergers comes from reading "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time". I have no personal experience of people on the spectrum.

Apologies of I get something glaringly wrong.

FILL: Ruby Gwendoline Marie Shappey, Aged 10

[personal profile] anon_e_moss
2012-02-22 07:49 pm UTC (link)
Just a little fill. I haven't done as much research as I probably should have done on this, because every site seemed to say something different, so apologies if I make any glaring mistakes!

Ironically, the idea was inspired by the scene in Sherlock where John suggests to Lestrade that Sherlock might have Aspergers. And Sherlock's unique ability to navigate London with his eyes shut.

* * *

“Geocaching!”
“Geo-what?”
Arthur was literally bouncing he was so excited. “I have been trying to think all day about what I could do with Ruby this weekend and I finally thought of it. Geocaching?”
“Ah, she’s visiting is she” Douglas said, abandoning his magazine to the coffee table in the MJN office.
“Ruby?” Martin asked, looking up from his flight manual.
“My sister.” Arthur said, apparently surprised that Martin didn’t know.
“Your...you...you have...” Martin turned to Carolyn.
“Oh don’t be ridiculous, Martin.” Carolyn said, not even looking up from her own paper work. “I have just the one child, and that is more than enough. Ruby is no more related to me than you are, unless you count her mother also being a member of the ‘Gordon Shappey needs to rot in Hell’ club.”
“She’ll love Geocaching.” Arthur said, still bouncing.
“And what is Geocaching?” Douglas asked.
“Surely Arthur has not finally found a subject of which you have no knowledge whatsoever.” Carolyn said, mockingly.
“Knowing Arthur, he’s only just invented it.”
Arthur was logging into the PC next to Carolyn. “It’s like a global treasure hunt. People hide boxes and trinkets, and then you have to find them using maps and GPS. Mum can I borrow the emergency hand held GPS from GERTI?”
“If you don’t mind buying batteries for it first.”
“There’s one in Fitton Forrest.” Arthur shouted. Douglas briefly wondered if Archemedis had put as much enthusiasm into the word Eureka. “Excellent. We can go straight from the airfield after she lands.”
“Ruby is travelling all this way and all she will get is a few square miles of woods and a river full of shopping trolleys.” Douglas said, returning to his magazine. “My heart goes out to the child.”
“We could all go.”
“Arthur, light of my life...”
“But Snoopadoop would love it. And it will be like that team building exercise we did last August. Only with less paint. And pain. Less pain is good. And I’ll bring a picnic. We have to go for the picnic.”
“I am sure that Douglas and Martin have much better things to do...”
Martin hadn’t quite got past the word ‘Picnic’. “Um, actually I don’t mind if you need someone to help carry things.” Free food!
“And I am tempted to go just the appease my curiosity.” Douglas also had a soft spot for the youngest member of clan Shappy, but he wasn’t about to let that on. “Not to mention that you should probably have someone along who knows how to actually read the emergency GPS.”
“I know how to read it.” Martin said, not keeping the offence from his voice.
“Au contraire mon cheri.”

***

When Martin arrived at Fitton Airfield on Saturday morning, he decided that however the day turned out it was worth it to see Douglas in a pair of ridiculous dungarees and a chequered shirt.
“Ah, good morning Sir.” Douglas called, leafing through what appeared to be a copy of the Residents Guide to Fitton. “I just found your advert. £10 an hour! Do I get what I paid for?”
“Why do you have a Residents Guide to Fitton?”
“If you must know, it’s a present for Ruby.”
“A telephone book?”
“Trust me, Martin. Trust me.”
Whatever Martin might have said next was interrupted by the timely arrival of Carolyn, Arthur, and a ten year old female clone of Arthur. She had the same colour hair, only long and worn in plaits that flowed over her long denim coat, from under a black cap that must have been too warm for the weather.
“Hello. I’m Ruby Gwendoline Marie Shappey.” She said, looking off to the right. Her eyes came round, and fixed on to the Residents Guide. It was this point that, to Martin’s surprise, her face lit up.
“Ruby.” Douglas said, presenting the book. Ruby took the book and immediately opened it to the back page, where there was a fold out street map of Fitton.
“What do you say?” Carolyn asked.
“Thank you Uncle Douglas.” Ruby didn’t look up from the map.
“Ruby Shappey?” This time there was a slight warning tone, and Carolyn held a finger in front of Ruby’s eyes, bringing her gaze up until she was looking in Douglas’s direction.
“Thank you Uncle Douglas.” She had already started looking back at the map before she finished speaking, finding Fitton airfield and then tracing the route to the forest with her index finger.
“Ruby...”
“It’s alright Carolyn.” Douglas said. “I’m not offended.”
“Right, well shall we be off then.” Carolyn said. “Arthur, please make sure that Ruby doesn’t walk out into a road.”
“Okay Mum.” Arthur said, gently tapping Ruby on the shoulder and leading her ahead. Her nose remained in the guide as she walked, finger walking the same route on her map
Martin was still rooted to the ground.
“Martin. Is everything alright?” Carolyn asked as Douglas walked on ahead of them.
“She’s...I mean Ruby...She’s...”
“Even more like Sherlock Holmes than you. I agree. She is obsessed with maps and can navigate most places that she has been to with her eyes shut, much to the annoyance of the taxi industry.” Carolyn reached down to pat her excited dog on the head. “Give her a chance. She will grow on you. Come along Snoopadoop.”
The dog ran on, followed my Carolyn.
“And you all...don’t mind.” Martin muttered to himself, before securing his back pack and following the group.

***

The Geocaching very much became Arthur and Ruby’s department after a couple of hours (After Douglas gave up control of the GPS with mock annoyance). Everyone else and the dog just enjoying a quiet walk in the woods. The sun was out, it was warm, there was the promise of food, and Martin realised that he was actually quite content.
An airplane flew over.
“Was that Uniform Foxtrot Oscar?” Arthur called.
Martin nodded, then looked at his watch. “They’re early. They’re not suppose to land until one.”
“You have memorised the timetables of the other flights.”
“It never hurts to know what is going on.” Martin said, turning to Douglas.
“On your day off.”
“Anyone mind if I eat my chocolate bar early?” Martin said, taking his back pack off.
“We’re in the right grid reference.” Ruby said. “It is somewhere near that tree.” She pointed, and she and Arthur were off, with Carolyn following them simply out of nothing better to do.
Martin had expected Douglas to walk on with them, but instead the older man sat down next to Martin as he looked through the bag. “She’s a lot like you?”
“Who?”
“Carolyn. Who do you think?”
“Oh, Ruby.” Martin concentrated on the bag. He found the bar and took it out.
“I mean ignoring that she’s a girl, ten years old, and probably about as interested in planes as you are in NASCAR.” Douglas took the bag from Martin, and closed it. “And I was only teasing about the timetables. Perfectly sensible to memorise the other flights. Supposing we had been chartered last minute today, and you needed to schedule us in. Much quicker and more efficient if you already know the airfield timetable.”
“Yes. Yes it is. Isn’t it.” Martin opened the chocolate bar and, as an afterthought drilled into him by Simon and Caitlin, offered the first bite to Douglas.
He turned it down with a wave of his hand. “Enjoy.”
Martin nodded, and took a bite from the bar.
“I am not someone who likes to be without facts, Martin.” Douglas said.
Martin chewed, and swallowed, before speaking. “What do you mean?”
“I mean when I am presented with something I do not know, I like to research it, and arm myself with the facts. Last night it was Googlecaching. When I first met Ruby...well, she was a baby then, but when I first met her as a child I spent a week in the Library. I went back to the same section the week that you joined MJN.”
“Why?” Martin suddenly seemed to find the chocolate bar fascinating.
Douglas couldn’t help the hurt look that crossed his face. He sighed, handed the Captain back his bag, and then stood up and moved on.
“It not...personal.” Martin called just before Douglas had left the clearing.
“Oh?” He turned back.
“It’s just...I am used to people not understanding.”
“That is a real shame.” Douglas said with honest sadness. “Well, if you feel like talking later.”
“We found it!” Came the excited cry of Arthur in the distance.

***

“Auntie Carolyn, there’s a box inside.”
“Well then open it.”
Ruby did so, and gasped. “It’s full of little green dolls.”
“They’re soldiers.” Arthur said, picking one up. “I used to have loads of these.”
“You still do. They’re in a box in the attic.”
“There’s a little toy plane, as well.” Ruby picked this up, and held it out for Martin.
“Oh...um...thank you, Ruby.” Martin said, taking the plane gently. It was a Lockheed Model 10 Electra, one of Martin’s favourites. “That’s really kind.”
“You’re welcome.” Ruby had already turned her attention back to the box.
“If you take something, you have to put something back.” Arthur said, putting the soldier back in the box and taking out the logbook to sign. “That’s the rule of Geocaching.”
“Um...”
“Ruby, can I borrow your book.” Douglas said, kneeling down beside her and opening the guide book so that Martin’s advert was visible. He tore the page out, and handed it to Ruby. “How about we put that in.”
Ruby looked at the page, then folded it and put it in the box. She then took the book back from Douglas and reopened it to the map.
“That’s a great idea Douglas.” Arthur said.
“Yes...um...thank you.” Martin looked down at the toy plane, and ran his finger along one of the rubber wheels, making it spin. “Thank you.”
“Excellent.” Carolyn said. “Who wants lunch?”

***

“Hey, Skip. Do you want the last sandwich?”
“Oh. Thanks.” Martin looked around. Had he been THAT engrossed in studying the toy plane. “Where is everyone?”
“They’re playing with Snoopadoop.” Arthur said, sitting cross legged next to Martin. “Are you having fun?”
“Yes. Plenty. Thank you.”
“Only you seem a little, and this is from my understanding people course in Ipswich, you seem a little like you have a lot on your mind.”
“I guess, I’m realising that what I thought was the situation isn’t the situation.”
“How so?” Arthur asked, intrigued.
“You know how when you think there’s something wrong with you. And everyone tells you that there’s something wrong with you. And YOU know that there’s something wrong with you?”
“Oh like when people tell me that I’m...”
“Which is wrong, and next time someone tells you that, tell me and Douglas. But imagine everyone telling you that you are wrong, but then realising that it is not that you are wrong, it is just that you are around the wrong type of people. And that the right type of people make you, right.”
“Who are the right type of people?”
“Carolyn, Douglas and you.”
“And what’s wrong that we make right?”
Martin looked at the toy plane, turning the wheel again. “I was a lot like Ruby at her age. Only difference was I didn’t have you.”
“But you have us now?”
“I know.” Martin said, still smiling. “It just took a map to show me that.”

OP here, grinning from ear to ear. I wasn't expecting the inclusion of an OC, considering I'm not really a fan, but this was BRILLIANT! Ruby's fascination with maps and Martin knowing the plane timetables was just spot on - research can only get you so far, and I for one can say that you handled the whole thing really well. This line: "Ruby had already turned her attention back to the box." really struck me for some reason - because you got the whole social aspect completely right: unwritten social rules like paying attention when someone is talking don't always stick with people with AS, and the way she just turns away after giving Martin the plane, her mind already on something else, rang true to life.
Thank you so much for filling!
