PROMPT POST PART III

Please see the most recent MOD NOTE

(updated 6 June)

Cabin Pressure Fic Prompt Post Three

Welcome everybody. How you got here I have no idea but thank you for coming and welcome again, nonetheless . As you may have gathered this is a Fic Prompting Meme dedicated solely to the hilarious and oh-so-addictive BBC Radio 4 sitcom - Cabin Pressure. I'm aiming for this to be pretty anything goes - but in order for everything to run smoothly, there are a few guidelines. Don't worry - they're not too restrictive.

FILLING GUIDELINES

As you probably all know - our meme now has it's very own database created and maintained by the great Enigel. It both catalogues each and every prompt that we post and provides links to fills. You can find it here: Google Spreadsheet

We also have a Pinboard archive which has been put in place by the lovely [personal profile] oxfordtweed in the place of our late Delicious Archive. This Archive contains a list of all the prompts this meme has to offer - you can find it here: Pinboard Archive

This is a great step forward in making our meme just a little more organised (but not too organised of course. This is Cabin Pressure) which is always a good thing.

So in order to make things easier to archive - Please nest your fills.

This can be done by either posting each part as a reply to that part's immediate predecessor, OR by replying each time to Part I OR - well you get the idea :D

It makes it simpler for Enigel and myself to link fills in a clean and clear manner. Following these guildelines will be very much appreciated guys :D

REPROMPTING

Reprompting is allowed but please include the URL of the original prompt when you do so. It will make it infinitely more easy to Archive which would make both Enigel and I very happy :)

As for everything else

  1. Be respectful to one another. Disagreements are fine, but not everything disagreeable is trolling. If you suspect someone of trolling, just ignore it. If you cannot respond to a comment without attacking or trolling someone else, keep it to yourself.

  2. No bashing prompts. It might not be your cup of tea - but obviously someone wants it enough to go to the effort of requesting it. So just scroll past it.

  3. Prompt away as much as you like guys - seriously, go wild - but please try to fill as well.

  4. NEW - If your fill includes a major element that veers from the original prompt (crossovers, established universes, kinks, et cetera), please take a few moments to check with the OP that such additions are welcome. This has caused problems in the past and it only takes a few moments of your time.
  5. Please no RPF. I'm not trying to oppress you RPF writers and enthusiasts, I would just really like to avoid any legal problems.

  6. When you post a fill (or post a new part of a WIP) please go over to the Filled Prompts Post (if it is complete) or the WIP Post (if there are still more parts to come) and, following each post's guideline's, post a link to this fill or new part.

REALLY IMPORTANT ADDENDUM

According to numerous Child Safety laws it is illegal to provide pornographic material to minors. Seeing that the majority of the stuff we have here is rather adult in nature, this Meme is consequently an 18+ zone. Failing to comply to this rule could result in the Meme getting shut down. So if you're here and you're under 18 please back button now.

+ Please do not post anything regarding minors in a sexual situation. It really doesn't matter how tasteful or crass it is, there are laws that classify that sort of thing as child pornography and as such, I'm afraid we're going to have to go with the attitude that safe is better than sorry.

It really is VERY important that these rules are upheld as the consequences are severe.

Other than that - go crazy guys. Any problems please just message me and I'll try my best to work it out.

An Irregular AU

(Anonymous) 2012-03-05 04:56 pm (UTC)(link)
A long while back there was either a prompt or a fill which described Martin as "a sad faced Victorian orphan", or words to that effect. For no reason at all this popped into my head today, and out of it comes this prompt...

Circa 1897. Sir Hercules Shipwright is engaged to Lady Carolyn Knapp-Shappey, a wealthy widow whose son has been wrongly accused of a serious crime. Naturally no expenses will be spared to prove his innocence, so who else do they go to but Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson?

Holmes and Watson then call on the help of the trusty Baker Street Irregulars, among them the little Martin and his older, more street-wise brother Douglas...

TL;DR: MJN in the Victorian era appealing to Holmes & Watson to solve a crime.

I would attempt to write it myself but I'm on a self-imposed break at the moment, so I'm releasing the bunny into the wild in the hope it finds a good home...

Arthur and The Talk

(Anonymous) 2012-03-05 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Being a parent to Arthur has its own difficulties. So in addition to the normal birds and the bees talk, Carolyn had to explain a lot of additional things to Arthur, in great detail. How to not be pressured into doing things you don't want to do. How to make sure you never pressure someone into doing something they don't want to do. In addition to normal safe sex talk, a discussion of whether Arthur would ever be able to be responsible for a child.

TL;DR Carolyn gave Arthur a much more detailed sex talk than usual, including emphasis on consent for both parties.

Harry Potter AU

(Anonymous) 2012-03-05 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I've only seen one or two of these...

Martin is a Hufflepuff. His best (and only) friend is Arthur, a fellow Hufflepuff. Douglas is a Slytherin. Carolyn is a Prof. of... IDK, you choose.

During one of Douglas' schemes, Martin unexpectedly intervenes and thus saves Douglas from a possible maiming from a Hippogriff/dragon/giant spider. Douglas always repays his debts and vows to help Martin pass his exams. However, this causes natural jealousy among the Slytherin community...

Martin/Carl the ATC

(Anonymous) 2012-03-05 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm following the Martin and Carl RP Twitter accounts and I am loving their buddy buddy relationship that's been building recently, even if it's not really what I imagined the character on the show to be like.

So I would like a fic where Carl becomes Martin's friend, starts sharing food and the like to feed him up, like the twitter accounts suggest, and then they got all cuddly and snuggly with each other, and before they know it, they're in a proper couply relationship.

Pretty please with Surprising Rice on top?

Glad you like it, Nonny! I'm really enjoying interacting with Carl - I like that he's a massive loser, just like Martin.

Douglas and a baby

(Anonymous) 2012-03-05 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
When Helena and Douglas divorce, Helena is pregnant but doesn't tell Douglas. She doesn't know whose baby it is and the first Douglas knows of it is when the hospital phones him (when he's at the airfield?) Douglas is still her next of kin and there have been complications and Helena is dead, the baby left without a mother.

Douglas takes care of the baby whilst dealing with his own grief.

Martin Harassed

(Anonymous) 2012-03-05 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the students has a crush on Martin, things get uncomfortable.

my brother was once sexually harassed by a girl he had no choice but to interact with, and he was afraid to do anything b/c he was so much bigger than her

comment boxed tw harrasment Re: Martin Harassed

(Anonymous) 2012-03-24 12:17 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hey, flyboy!"

Martin nearly dropped the saucepan he was filling with water, slopping it on his shirt front. "Ah! Jenny! Hi! I was just-"

"Having a one man wet t-shirt contest and not telling me so I can get my camera. Shame. My 'special' photo folder could use some fresh material." Jenny leered and swayed into the kitchen.

Martin swallowed and turned back to the sink. "I'll be out of your way in a moment."

"You're never in my way, Martin." Martin's shoulders tensed as Jenny pressed against his back, trapping him against the sink. "Nothing ever gets in my way."

"I- can I pass you- I mean-"

"I can reach." Jenny shifted slowly, rubbing her chest across Martin's tense back as she reached over to one side for a tea mug.

Martin's pot of water started to overflow. He shut the tap off and turned, stepping to the right to get away, but Jenny stepped with him, keeping him trapped against the counter as she reached for the tea cannister on the other side, pressing herself against Martin's chest and looking up at him through her eyelashes.

"Jenny, I-"

"Shush." She said, then snaked an arm in behind him to turn on the kettle, leaning in closer, all but burying her nose in his collar.

Martin squeaked, raising his hands and pot of water over his head.

"You smell interesting. Like lemons and cheese. Bit like a cheesecake. What do you say, Martin? Should I nibble round your edges and let you dissolve on my tongue?"

"I don't- I've said-"

Jenny laughed, low and soft. "Oh I know what you've said. Methinks the gentlemen doth protest too much." Her hand skated around Martin's slim torso and down to grab his arse and squeeze.

Martin jumped and squawked. The saucepan of water Martin had been holding went flying, sending an arc of water over the pair of them. Jenny shrieked and backed away, dripping.

"I'm sorry! I- You startled me!" Martin brandished the now-empty saucepan in front of him like a shield.

The brief expression of anger on Jenny's face disappeared, replaced by another leer. "Look, Martin, you've got me all wet! You're going to have to do something about that now..." She reached for the hem of her shirt.

Martin dodged past her, muttering apologies. Her laughter followed him up the stairs to his room, where he slammed and locked the door. Safe inside, he dropped the empty saucepan next to the hot plate and the box of pasta, then dropped onto his mattress. His shirt was soaked from the water spilled, but instead of taking it off and putting on a dry one, he pulled his blankets around himself an wedged his back in under the slope of his room's ceiling,

Somehow he wasn't hungry anymore.

Childhood trauma

(Anonymous) 2012-03-06 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
When he was kid, Martin was nearly kidnapped. He got away, told the police, but the kidnapper was never found.

Today, MJN is flying a very wealthy, very-needed client, so everybody should be on their best behavior.

The man coming on the plane is older, grayer, but still the same man that tried to kidnap Martin so many years ago.

Carolyn's First Husband

(Anonymous) 2012-03-06 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'd like something with Carolyn's first husband, the guy before Gordon. (Ruth mentions him in "Helsinki", and apparently he and Carolyn are on speaking terms.)

What's he up to these days? How did they meet? Why did they get married? Why did they divorce? Do any of the MJN crew get to meet him?

Fill: Wrong But Romantic 1/4

[personal profile] straydog733 2013-01-16 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
(This turned into an examination of everyone's first marriages, not just Carolyn's.)

Ian was a good man. That made everything worse, she had concluded. She would have greatly preferred it if he had shouted and stamped his feet and swore that he would make her pay for what she had done. (She got to experience all that in later years, but it would have been better suited coming from Ian.)

No, he never yelled at her. He never even blamed her. What he said cut her in a way that was far more difficult to brush off.

“I am sorry I could not be the husband you deserved. I hope that he is.”

They had been childhood friends, and everyone had always assumed they would get married, including the two of them. They did, and were reasonably content running his family’s sweet shop. They were a team, and Ian was always a companion, never an opponent.

Except it turned out that an opponent was what she wanted.

Gordon Shappey had been on holiday, a nice little jaunt round the countryside, when he fancied some sweets. He argued with her over the price of caramels, and in that moment she felt more passion for him then she ever could have mustered for Ian.

She and Ian divorced quickly and cleanly. A month after that, she eloped with Gordon. This wedding lacked some of the trappings and niceties of the first, like a sister who was willing to be maid of honor.

Five months after that, Arthur was born.

FILL: We've Changed So Much Since Then 1/5

(Anonymous) 2012-03-06 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
We’ve Changed So Much Since Then, Oh Yeah, We’ve Grown.

-x-

1 - 1965

Everybody kept telling Carolyn what an exciting time it was to be young. She didn’t feel particularly excited. She didn’t have the face or the legs to pull off a short hairdo or short skirt respectively, her high street was hardly Swinging Carnaby St, and her Beatles LPs were all very well and good, but the Fab Four were hardly likely to play the local hippodrome now, were they?

Dream as she like about winning John Lennon over with her very wittiest one-liners and jetting off on tour with him and the lads, the truth was, she was a 20 year old shop girl with chunky thighs who couldn’t hold her tongue, and was considered very lucky to have bagged herself a fiancé at all, let alone a nice young man whose father owned a chain of businesses. Yes, there was the slight problem that he was deadly, deadly dull, but she could work around that, surely.

It was all her idea to do it before the wedding day. After all, they were engaged to be married, they’d already paid in advance for the buffet, so why not? It felt a little bit naughty – a bit shocking. If her parents were to find out, well! George took some talking into it, but at the time she put it down to his sense of chivalry. Besides, she enjoyed taking control of the situation – winning fair fiancé over into her sinful boudoir.

That was, unfortunately, where her enjoyment of that first time – and of that act itself with George in general – ended. And the worst thing about it was, she really got the feeling that George spent the whole time feeling as awkward and unfulfilled over it as she did.

They got married anyway – well, what else were they supposed to do?

She spent the next 5 years hoping that George would do something – anything – that wasn’t boring. In 1970, he did something pretty not-boring, which also rather explained the sex issue. He admitted that he’d been madly in love with Ken from the chip shop on Applegate Road since 1962. It said a lot about the state of the marriage that Carolyn’s immediate reaction was ‘Oh, thank Christ for that’.

A few years down the line, after the divorce had gone through, they’d sit and drink wine and laugh about it. George apologised for everything – especially the sex, but Carolyn shrugged it off, glad that she’d been there to help her darling, bent-as-a-nine-bob-note best friend avoid the tyranny of his now late father’s homophobia, at least. George had been her practice run, she decided, and a really rather lucrative one, at that. By 1974, she had her own business and a fantastically sparky sex life with a rich, arrogant, glorious Australian bastard, whom she was determined to marry. The first time was always the worst, after all, she told herself. Gordon Shappey was The One this had all been leading up towards. Gordon Shappey was going to be the best thing that had ever happened to her.

Douglas did, indeed, 'start early', but it wasn't by choice. From an early age he was abused by someone in a position of control (family friend?).

When, decades later, that person somehow ends up on GERTI, what happens?

Icarus by name...

(Anonymous) 2012-03-06 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
So we had actual real-life man-with-a-van adventures today, taking a wardrobe up to my Uncle. It was originally flat-pack but as it seemed sturdy enough everyone decided to move it in one piece rather than take it to bits and reassemble it. The wardrobe got up there fine, they got it out the van, set it down on the pavement for a moment... Moved it just one tiny inch... and the whole thing spontaneously collapsed.

No lie. The poor van guy was mortified. Apparently he'd never had furniture spontaneously disintegrate on him before. Somehow it struck me as exactly the kind of thing that probably happens to Martin all the time.

SO-
5 moving disasters that weren't Martin's fault, and the one time Martin's natural clumsiness turned out to be a good thing.

Worth a Wound

Can I please have something inspired by...

It was worth a wound; it was worth many wounds; to know the depth of loyalty and love which lay behind that cold mask. The clear, hard eyes were dimmed for a moment, and the firm lips were shaking. For the one and only time I caught a glimpse of a great heart as well as of a great brain.

I'm not sure that anyone in MJN has a 'great brain', even Douglas! The rest of this makes me think of Carolyn though...

Widow/er

(Anonymous) 2012-03-06 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the multiple divorcees (Carolyn, Douglas, Herc) hasn't been entirely honest about the end of their marriages. But "multiple divorcee" leads to fewer painful questions than "divorced and widowed".

Fill: Technicalities

[personal profile] c3mf 2012-03-21 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
(I readily admit I'm becoming an angst-whore for this fandom. None of my fills are happy. Wonder what that says about me? lol. Also, the dialogue belongs to John Finnemore. I only filled in the bits between. :P)

The question, when posed, is simple enough.

“Oh, good Lord! And what have you done with your wife?”

The reaction, however, is not. The years have made covering up the initial sting instinctual, even as it still twinges uncomfortably in his chest. Fleetingly, Herc is stunned that Douglas even remembers Diane.

After all this time, the practiced words come easy. “I’m not married.” Anymore, he finishes silently. Technically, it’s true. He has built his life around that technicality. The focus helps.

So he is prepared when the pain inevitably comes and finds relief in the fact that it is no longer crippling. Guilt, though, still crowds behind the relief, instantaneously. Thankfully, he knows how to stifle it.

Douglas just smiles and raises a smug brow. “Divorced, I take it?”

“Of course.” Another technicality. It isn’t a lie, but the comfort is hollow at best.

Oblivious, Douglas leans a leisurely arm along the top of the window. “How many times?”

The words don’t catch like the use to. Herc takes his cue from Douglas and settles back in his seat, looking for all the world languid and unfazed. “Four. You?”

Douglas’s shrug is easy, indifferent even. Herc doesn’t envy him. “Just the three,” he smirks.

Herc doesn’t stop the sarcasm from bleeding into his voice. “Oh, you old romantic.”

After that, the words taper into silence. Douglas drums his fingers on the car roof distractedly. The fun is over now that he’s got what he wants. Herc remembers that particular vice readily enough. The years haven’t changed Douglas terribly much. To be fair, they haven’t change Herc much either.

“Right,” Douglas says, straightening. “Well, I’ll leave you to it.”

Herc smiles, the mask slipping into place with remarkable ease. They say their goodbyes and briefly he wonders if Douglas notices the pretense. He rolls up the window again after Douglas leaves, curls his fingers round the steering wheel and breathes.

By the time Carolyn comes back, he has laid Diane to rest again, a quiet, cherished memory nestled in the back of his thoughts. It’s almost easier than it should be to lock away the lingering grief.

He pulls out of the car park as Douglas mockingly serenades them and laughs at Carolyn’s barely-smothered indignation.

The pain, when the last of it fades, leaves no guilt behind.

A Night at the Opera

(Anonymous) 2012-03-08 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
"How did you like the opera, Martin?"

He didn't. From the first crash bwoooo! of the orchestra, Martin being building a headache that thrummed down his spine with every shrill soprano's siren cry. Madama Butterfly had been in Italian, which, to a man who barely had control of his native language at times, sounded like barks and growls and Arthur's drunken attempt at karaoke in Tokyo to Japanese pop music. The woman beside him smelled strongly of sweat and perfume. The man behind him kept sneezing. The woman in front of him had a ridiculous hat that blocked a portion of the stage.

Every time Martin turned his head to ask Herc a question, the words slipped from his lips as he saw the slack-jawed awe on the older man's face, the worship glowing like candles in his eyes. Not long after intermission, Martin had placed his hand on top of Herc's, who turned his palm and accepted the other man's sweaty palm into his dry, rough one.

That hand, the same one resting on the small of Martin's back, had anchored him through the rest of the performance, which flew over Martin's head like a goldfinch.

Martin stepped closer. "I really loved it, Herc."

It occurs to me that Martin, despite appearing rather wet, must have a core of solid titanium to cope with all he's been through: the poverty, the exam failures, the derision. All that and he keeps going, not blindly optimistic, just... determined.

Douglas has arguably lucked into a lot of things and is *very* used to things going his way. What would happen if it not only didn't go his way, but went Martin-level of spectacularly wrong? What if Helena took *everything* in the divorce? If there was an injunction against seeing his daughter? Would he fall off the wagon this time?

tl;dr H/C, friendship or slash I don't care, but Martin being the steadying influence and voice of comfort helping Douglas when the wheels fall off and there's nothing but despair and/or the bottle.

Martin Wets The Bed (Reprompt)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-06 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Martin has struggled with nocturnal enuresis (bedwetting) for most of his life. He is completely mortified whenever it happens and takes great care to hide it from everyone--to the point of losing sleep and avoiding intimate relations.

Because this is Skip we are talking about, his worst fears eventually come true, and somebody (I don't care who) finds out about his secret.

Here's the original prompt post, which is full of good ideas: http://cabinpres-fic.livejournal.com/1249.html?thread=1679585#t1679585

Martin/Arthur fluff

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I neeeeed Martin raving like a teenager - possibly while intoxicated and preferably with an audience of one fondly amused Douglas Richardson - about how much he loves Arthur, whom he has just started dating.

FILL: He Thinks I'm Brilliant

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 07:05 am (UTC)(link)
They had arrived at the hotel just before the light snow outside had turned into a massive blizzard - apparently, the American Midwest could put on quite a show when it was really trying properly - and were now thoroughly snowed in. And sharing a room, thanks to Carolyn, who had stayed behind with Arthur to begin the tentative and heavily denied first steps of "family time" with Herc. (Apparently, she was treating them both to a trip to the zoo, as revenge for the last opera Herc had dragged her to see.)

The small refrigerator in the otherwise sparsely furnished room (which did at least, thankfully, contain two beds) was surprisingly well-stocked. Douglas had persuaded Martin to make an executive decision about allowances being made due to Carolyn's decision to book them only one room without bothering to inform them of the situation, and a drinking game ("Cities that sound like alternative titles to films or books, alphabetical order, one shot if you take too long, two if you pass.") had begun.

Of course, Douglas couldn't drink when he missed one, which wasn't often, and Martin had to when he missed one, which was fairly often and increasingly so as time went on, so the game was hardly fair. After about thirty minutes, it had been pretty much abandoned in favour of pseudo-meaningful but still basically heartfelt chats as Martin got deeper into his cups and Douglas watched.

A drunk Martin Crieff was, apparently, a wild and unpredictable Martin Crieff.

He was still, however, Martin Crieff, so the wild unpredictability was largely tedious, occasionally somewhat worrying in an oh-the-poor-idiot sort of way, and mostly just tiresome.

The one thing that could be said in his favour, from Douglas's point of view, was that being essentially trapped in a hotel room with him made alcohol seem less and less enticing by the minute, even to extremely bored former drinkers.

In the past hour, they had covered every topic from "Isn't flying just the best thing in the world?" to "My father is probably spinning in his grave." Twice. This time, though, Martin seemed less inclined to return to the fun end of the spectrum, and was instead well on his way to "What's the point of it all?"

Douglas felt the need to intervene. He cast around for something positive that Martin had left out of the conversation so far. It didn't take long, as he'd been wondering about it earlier before writing it off as the whim of a highly intoxicated young man who wasn't at all accustomed to being intoxicated, highly or otherwise.

"So – how are things with you and Arthur?"

Martin's face went through several contortions as it apparently tried to decide whether he was pleased, embarrassed, or terrified. "Oh, uhm... Good. I mean - yes. Good. I'd say. Really - really, really good."

"Well, anything you say three times..."

“No, no no – I'm not – I'm not lying, I just, I was...” Martin struggled for words. Douglas kindly put this down to his state of advanced intoxication, even though, really, a sober Martin wasn't much more eloquent. “I was, um. Trying not to talk about it.”

Douglas frowned. “Why?”

“Thought it might... annoy you.”

“Ordinarily, you'd probably be right,” Douglas admitted with a sigh. “However, at present, we seem to have exhausted most other topics of conversation, and I am just tired enough to fall asleep if you get boring or embarrassing or exceedingly... you-ish.”

“Ewe?”

“You.”

“You?”

“Yes.”

“Oh.”

There was a moment of relative quiet as Martin processed this. Then, “Well, um. If you're... actually interested... It – it is going... rather well, actually. Very... very well.”

“Don't bother with anything so tedious as details or anything, Martin.”

“Details?” Martin's voice was almost a squeak.

Douglas smirked. “Not of the salacious variety, riveting though I'm sure that would be to the right audience, if one exists. No - I meant details pertaining to what exactly is so 'really, really good' about the relationship between a professional amateur pilot and a steward who thinks that planes stay up in the air due to some mysterious force that science has yet to discover.”

“How do you know 'details' like that wouldn't be s... sssss- sala- oh, bloody hell, sexual?” Martin demanded.

“Because Arthur is Arthur and you are you,” Douglas said smugly. “I have to assume there's a bit more keeping you together than the sexual prowess of either party.”

“You don't know that.”

“No, I suppose I don't. Nor do I particularly want to. Give me any other sort of details.”

Martin thought for a moment. “He... He thinks I'm brilliant,” he said at last, and Douglas had the distinct feeling that if he hadn't flopped somewhat dramatically onto his bed earlier in the evening to avoid passing out from dizziness, he would have done so now.

Martin's voice was high and pleased and just slightly embarrassed. It should have been amusing. Maybe even endearing. Douglas should have laughed.

Instead, Helena's face and she thinks I'm terrific suddenly invading his mind, he said, “Arthur thinks everything is brilliant.”

“Yeah, but – no one thinks I'm brilliant,” Martin said, still sounding like he was smiling. “I mean, no one. And – and Arthur doesn't think everyone is brilliant... He doesn't like his father. Or Ruth. Or Kieran. Or that man who yelled at us for holding hands on the way out of the shop the other day.”

Douglas raised an eyebrow. He hadn't heard about that. “So, your boyfriend places you above his quite possibly abusive and certainly neglectful father, his mother's horrible sister who has driven her husband to feigning deafness, this oh-so-perfectly-functional couple's even more horrible grandson who beats up pilots, and a bigot on the street. Well done.”

Martin sat up quickly, said “No, but –”, and fell over on his side, clutching his head and swearing.

“Ow, ow ow ow, fuck, ow.

Then he fell silent, save for some groaning.

Douglas gave him a moment to collect himself. When this didn't appear to be happening, he said in a carefully unconcerned voice, “All right?”

“Yeah,” Martin murmured. “Yeah, just... dizzy. Stupid... ear. Thing.” Slowly, he rolled over onto his back again, breathing hard. “What was I... about to...”

“I honestly have no idea. Something about Arthur and the word 'brilliant.' I'm sure that narrows it down enormously.”

“Oh! No, I know what it was.” The happy note of earlier reentered Martin's voice quite spectacularly, and when Douglas glanced over at him he was beaming up at the ceiling. “Arthur – like you said, Arthur thinks everyone – well, almost everyone – is brilliant, but he's dating me. He could have anyone – don't laugh; he gets numbers all the time without trying. People think he's sweet. And he's nice to everyone, even – even the people he doesn't like and the people who don't like him, but – but he's dating. me. He chose me. Nobody chooses me. Over anyone. For anything. Ever.”

Martin had gotten quieter during the last few words, but he still sounded happy enough. Douglas decided to leave that particular subset of the topic alone for a bit. “And what do you think of him?” he prompted.

“He's amazing,” Martin said instantly. “Amazing.”

“Not brilliant?”

“That's his word. Feels wrong saying it about him, but yes. Brilliant. Definitely. And amazing.”

“So you've said.”

“Incredible. Kind. Caring. Just... fantastic. And really a lot smarter than we give him credit for.”

Douglas laughed before he could stop himself. “No,” Martin said sharply, the smile gone from his voice. “No, he is. Just... not – not about things like – like cooking or maths or science or... remembering. But – other things. People things.”

“Ah. I see.” He didn't, quite, but he thought he knew what Martin was driving at. Martin was sounding progressively more and more defensive, though, so he thought he probably ought to change the subject.

“How long has it been now? A month?”

“Three weeks and four days,” said Martin, stifling a yawn.

“Counting the days? Goodness.”

“Shut up.”

“...You've got it bad, haven't you?”

There was nothing but silence from the other bed. For a moment, Douglas thought Martin had fallen asleep.

And then, quietly, tentatively:

“Douglas? Can I... tell you something?”

“You've been telling me things all night, Martin, whether I wanted to hear them or not.”

“Douglas. I'm being serious.”

Douglas rolled his eyes. “Yes, all right. Go ahead.”

“I think... I think I'm in love with him.”

Douglas sat bolt upright. “Martin –”

“I know – I know I'm drunk, and people s-say stupid things when they're drunk, but it's not just now; I've thought it – for at least a week. And – I – I haven't said anything to him, because I don't want to scare him off, or – or make him think he has to stay with me to keep me happy – he likes making people happy – even if he decides he doesn't want to be with me. I just... I needed – to tell someone.”

Douglas rubbed one hand over his face, scowling into his palm for a moment as he thought. He was really far too tired for this. “Martin, I'm guessing Carolyn gave you the hurt-him-and-you'll-wake-up-tomorrow-in-a-back-alley-in-Sweden speech shortly after discovering exactly whom it was Arthur kept trying not to talk about.”

“Nigeria, but yes.”

“Good. I don't have to be quite so creative, then. Listen carefully: Martin, if you hurt Arthur, I will not kill you. Because Carolyn will beat me to it, and because I have a daughter I would still like to be allowed to visit in the foreseeable future. If, by some miracle, Carolyn does not scatter your ashes all over Europe via one or both of GERTI's engines, I will make you wish she had. You said a few minutes ago that Arthur is the only person to ever 'pick you' – the only person to ever find you 'brilliant.' That reeks just slightly of desperation, Martin. You need to think very carefully about whether you actually love Arthur, or even like him in that sense – or you just like the idea of somebody loving you. Because if that's the case, this whole thing is going to end in heartbreak – yours and his. Yours a bit more literally once Carolyn gets wind of it. Arthur thinks the best of everyone – I chased off two women and one man before you joined MJN. The man and one of the girls were always bringing their friends along to the airfield to make fun of him behind his back. The other girl was a travel journalist who thought she could get free tickets out of him. Arthur didn't suspect them of anything, and he didn't suspect me of having done anything when they suddenly broke things off. If you tell him you love him, he'll believe you. You need to make sure you aren't lying to him.”

Martin was quiet for a long time, fiddling with the frayed threads of the blanket beneath him and staring intently at nothing in particular.

After a few minutes, he sat up – slowly, this time. He looked Douglas in the eye and said firmly, “The thing is, Douglas – I don't fall in love. I've had girlfriends. Boyfriends. Not many, but I have. And I never let myself fall in love with them, because I always just expected them to leave me. On some level, I expect Arthur to do the same thing. But I still fell in love with him. That's... not easy for me to do. It's... scary, actually. Because I'm afraid that he'll realize he can do much better than me, or – that you're right and I'm setting us both up for disaster, or that everything will work out but then one of us will get hit by lightning, or something ridiculous like that.”

“We do work in a large metal box in the sky.”

Martin's lips twitched into a brief smile before he schooled his features into a more serious expression and continued. “I don't think – it's desperation to – to have somebody like me. Because – even if he decided he couldn't stand the sight of me anymore, I would... still feel this way. I would still – still want him to be happy, and I would still... Douglas. I've had nightmares about him leaving. Actual nightmares. After less than a month! It's – it's pathetic, but I think it's – probably – also... love.”

They regarded each other wordlessly for a few moments, Douglas thinking carefully and Martin looking nervous.

Finally, Douglas nodded. “All right.”

“All – all right?”

“All right, I'll believe you are hopelessly, pathetically, utterly in love with Arthur Shappey.”

Martin grinned. “I – I am, aren't I? I am.”

This time he did flop backward onto the bed, rather more dramatically than strictly necessary. “I'm in love!” he all but shouted, laughing.

Douglas couldn't help but smile. “And what do you think of this strange new emotion?”

“It's... terrifying.”

“And?”

Brilliant.

Sherlock Holmes crossover (sort of)

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I know there have been a lot of Holmes prompts, but as I was watching some Granada!Holmes, a thought struck me and won't let go.

Martin applies for The Red-Headed League.

BUWHAHAHAHA

That would be awesome.

"Mr. Holmes, I didn't even get to the encyclopedic entry for aeroplane before I was fired!"

Poor Martin.

I'd love to see some more Douglas/Arthur.

Yes, seconded.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 05:46 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if we've had this, but:

Martin starts to lose his hearing (inner ear problem and all), and has to get surgery.

(Anonymous) 2012-03-07 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
When I'm feeling particularly cruel towards Martin, I like to think that his inner-ear abnormality is actually Meniere's disease.

So... seconding.

So, aviation is meant to be one of the most superstitious businesses. I'd love to see our two pilots baffling the cabin crew with weird superstitions - and if it leads to Martin/Douglas, even BETTER.
